Adjustable Ankle Support: Tighten It Through the Day as the Swelling Changes
This adjustable ankle support holds a sore or recently sprained ankle firmly and lets you change how tight it is without taking your shoe off, so you can loosen it when the foot swells in the afternoon and pull it up again before you walk home. It wraps round the ankle rather than pulling on like a sock, which is why it suits a joint that is still puffy and tender to handle. That is also what makes it the one to reach for in the first fortnight, when the ankle changes shape hour by hour and nothing fixed-size stays comfortable.
It is made by med textile in a skin-coloured elastic fabric, with a wrap-around strap that fastens back on itself, and it is light enough to wear inside a normal shoe all day rather than only in the evenings. Our pharmacist sizes it from a measurement round your ankle rather than from your shoe size, and will tell you plainly when a sprain wants something firmer than this one, which on this shelf is a decision somebody should be making for you.
What an Adjustable Wrap Is For
It is the support for a swelling that changes. An ankle is at its most swollen in the evening and after standing, and a fixed-size sleeve that fits in the morning is cutting in by four o’clock. A wrap you can reset in ten seconds suits that day better than anything pull-on.
It is also the one to buy if bending to pull a sleeve on is the problem, which it often is for an older ankle, a stiff back or a knee that refuses to fold. You lay this one against the ankle and wind it on.
And it suits a foot that is tender to touch. Dragging a tight sleeve over a sprained ankle hurts, where laying a wrap on it barely registers.
Getting the Tension Right
Put it on first thing, before the swelling builds. Sit down, foot resting at a right angle rather than pointed, and start the wrap at the top of the foot, winding up and round the ankle so each turn overlaps the one before by about half its width.
Firm, not tight. You should be able to slide a finger under the edge. Then check your toes: press a nail and watch the colour come back. Pins and needles, numbness, a bluish or very pale colour, coldness, or pain getting worse all mean too tight, so take it off and start again more loosely.
Reset it twice a day rather than once. Mid-morning and mid-afternoon is what most people settle on. A wrap that has been on since six in the morning has usually either loosened off or started digging in.
Take it off at night unless our doctor has told you otherwise, and let the skin breathe. Wash it by hand in warm water with mild soap, press the water out rather than wringing, and dry it flat in the shade.
Which of Our Ankle Supports You Need
We stock ten, which is more help than it sounds once somebody sorts them for you.
This wrap is for mild swelling, aches, early recovery and a joint that needs adjusting through the day.
For a mild sprain where you want warmth and steady compression and no fiddling, the Kedley active elasticated ankle support pulls on like a sock and is the cheapest we keep.
For a proper sprain, a wobbly ankle, or sport, the lace-up ankle brace is the one with real sideways control, and bracing is the functional support with the best evidence behind it for stopping the next sprain.
Tell our pharmacist what happened, whether you can walk on it, and what you need to get back to, and we will tell you which to buy, including when the cheapest one is right.
The Two Things a Support Leaves to Somebody Else
A support holds the joint, and that is the whole of what it does. Two other things decide how a sprain turns out: whether a bone is broken, and whether you get the balance back afterwards, which is what keeps people from turning the same ankle again.
Come to our doctor the same day if you were unable to put weight on it at the time and still struggle to manage four steps, if the bone itself is tender when you press the knobs on either side of the ankle, if the joint looks out of shape, or if it went numb.
And once the pain settles, do the balance work. Standing on the bad leg for thirty seconds at a time, several times a day, holding a worktop at first and then not, is the exercise that most reduces the chance of doing it again. Our doctor will set it out properly, or point you to a physiotherapist.
Is an Adjustable Ankle Support Right for You?
This wrap suits mild sprains, aches and swelling. Please speak to our pharmacist or our doctor before buying if any of these apply:
- You could not walk on it after the injury, or the bone is tender to press. Please see our doctor first, because that is the question of whether anything is broken and a support answers nothing.
- You have diabetes, poor circulation or numbness in the foot. Compression carries more risk and skin damage shows late. Let our doctor advise before you wrap anything tightly.
- The ankle gives way repeatedly, even on flat ground. That wants a brace with sideways control and a proper look at the joint.
- The swelling is in both ankles, or it comes with breathlessness. That is a different problem and our doctor should see you.
- The skin is broken, rashy or fragile where the wrap sits. Tell our pharmacist and we will suggest what to put under it.
Our pharmacists will size it from a tape measure and show you the finger test, and our doctor is here if anything suggests more than a sprain.

FAQs
What size do I need?
Measure around your ankle just above the bony knobs, with the foot at a right angle, and tell our pharmacist the figure in centimetres. We size it from that rather than from shoe size, which does not track ankle width. If you are between sizes, say what you will be wearing it inside, because a work boot and a sandal want different answers.
How tight should it be?
Firm, with room to slide a finger under the edge. Then check your toes: press a nail and watch the colour come back. Pins and needles, numbness, a bluish or very pale colour, coldness, or pain getting worse all mean it is too tight. Take it off and rewrap more loosely.
Can I wear it all day?
Yes, and reset it twice rather than once, because the ankle swells through the day. Mid-morning and mid-afternoon is what most people settle on. Take it off at night unless our doctor has said otherwise, and let the skin breathe.
Why buy a wrap instead of a pull-on sleeve?
Three reasons. The swelling changes through the day and a wrap resets in ten seconds. Bending to pull a sleeve on is itself the problem for a lot of people. And dragging a tight sleeve over a tender, swollen ankle hurts, where laying a wrap on it does not.
Will it fit inside my shoe?
It is thin enough for most normal shoes, and a lace-up shoe gives you room to adjust. A tight court shoe or a narrow boot may not take it. Tell our pharmacist what you will be wearing and we will say.
Does it fit the left or the right ankle?
It wraps on, so it works on either. Please tell us which ankle anyway when you order, because it changes how our pharmacist shows you to wind it.
Is it suitable for sport?
For a gentle walk or light gym work, yes. For football, running, or anything with sudden turns, a wrap like this does not give enough sideways control, and the lace-up ankle brace is the one for that. Our pharmacist will not sell you this one for a pitch.
How do I wash it?
By hand, in warm water with mild soap. Press the water out rather than wringing it, and dry it flat in the shade. Sunlight and a hot iron both destroy the elastic, and a wrap that has lost its stretch is doing nothing.
How long should I wear it after a sprain?
Functional support for four to six weeks is what the guidance points to for an ordinary sprain, alongside getting moving rather than resting it completely. Our doctor will say what suits your ankle, because that depends on how bad it was and what you need to get back to.
My ankle keeps giving way. Is this enough?
Probably not. Repeated giving way needs the joint looked at and a brace with real sideways control, not a compression wrap. Please see our doctor, and ask our pharmacist about the lace-up brace in the meantime.
Should I be exercising it or resting it?
Moving it, within what the pain allows, as soon as our doctor says you may. Complete rest and immobilising an ordinary sprain give worse results than functional support and exercise. The balance work matters most: standing on the bad leg for thirty seconds at a time, several times a day, is what most reduces the chance of turning it again.
