A Digital Thermometer That Tells You Whether to Worry
This digital thermometer helps you find out in seconds whether a hot, miserable child has a fever worth acting on, and it beeps when the reading is done so you are not guessing with a thermometer in a wriggling armpit. It reads in Celsius or Fahrenheit on a backlit screen, it holds the last reading so you can compare one hour to the next, and it contains no mercury.
The number on its own means less than people think. What the number means depends entirely on where you took it, and a reading from an armpit compared against a threshold meant for a different site is how a parent either panics at nothing or sits at home with a child who needs a doctor. The section below is worth reading twice.
Where You Take It Changes the Number
The same child measured three ways gives three different readings, and the differences are large enough to matter. A mouth reading sits roughly half a degree below a rectal one. An armpit reading sits roughly half a degree below the mouth, so about a whole degree below rectal.
So take it the same way every time and tell our pharmacist or our doctor which way you took it, because that is the first thing we will ask. As a working guide, a fever is around 37.5 degrees Celsius or above in the armpit, around 37.8 or above in the mouth, and around 38.0 or above rectally. Those are guides rather than lines in the sand, and in a child who is otherwise bright and drinking normally a modest fever is usually the body doing its job. Please let our doctor set the figures that matter for your own household, especially where somebody is on chemotherapy or steroids, because then any fever is treated differently.
Taking a Good Reading
Put a fresh probe cover on if you have them, or wipe the tip with an alcohol pad and let it dry. For the mouth, place the tip well under the tongue to one side, close the lips and keep them closed until it beeps, and wait at least fifteen minutes after a hot or cold drink or the reading will be wrong.
For the armpit, which is the one most people use on a child, the tip must sit in the hollow against dry skin with the arm held firmly down across the chest. A damp armpit, loose clothing or an arm that lifts halfway through all give a falsely low reading, which is the error that matters. For an infant rectally, use a little lubricant, insert the tip only a short way, hold the child securely and never force it. A thermometer used rectally becomes a rectal thermometer for good: label it and never put it in anybody’s mouth afterwards.
When a Temperature Is an Emergency
Please know these before you need them. Any fever at all in a baby under three months old needs to be seen the same day, however well the baby otherwise seems, and of everything here that is the one to remember.
Get help urgently for a rash that stays visible when you press on it, a stiff neck or dislike of light, a fit or convulsion, breathing that is fast, laboured or grunting, a child who is floppy, drowsy or very hard to rouse, cold or mottled hands and feet with a hot body, a weak high-pitched cry, no urine for many hours, or any fever in somebody on chemotherapy or steroids. In an adult, add severe headache with neck stiffness, confusion, chest pain, breathlessness, or a fever that persists beyond five days.
Treat the Person, Not the Reading
A child with a temperature of 39 who is drinking, playing between naps and looking at you is far less worrying than a child at 38 who is limp and silent. The thermometer measures one thing; you are watching everything else.
So use the number to track direction over hours rather than as a verdict. Keep fluids going, which matters more than anything you can buy. Dress them lightly rather than stripping them or piling on blankets, and leave cold baths and cold sponging alone, since they make a child shiver, and shivering pushes the temperature up. Paracetamol is for a child who is uncomfortable rather than for a number on a screen, and please ask our pharmacist to work out the dose by your child’s weight rather than their age, since that is where most dosing errors come from.
Keeping It Clean and Working
Wipe the tip with an alcohol pad after every single use and let it dry before putting the cap back on, and wipe it again before use if anybody else in the house has used it. In an illness going round a family, that one habit stops the thermometer carrying the illness from room to room.
Keep it in its cap in a drawer rather than loose in a bag where the tip gets knocked. Most thermometers of this kind run on a small button cell: please ask our pharmacist which one yours takes and buy a spare at the same time, because a thermometer with a flat battery at two in the morning is no use to anybody. If the display flickers, shows odd characters or gives readings that jump around, bring it in and we will check it against ours.
Two Things to Confirm With Us Before You Order
Please ask our pharmacist to confirm the exact model you are getting and how much water it will take. Thermometers of this type vary: some have a flexible tip, some rigid, some are splash-resistant at the tip only and some can be rinsed under a tap, and the difference decides how you are allowed to clean it.
We will also tell you the stated accuracy for the unit in stock and whether probe covers are available for it. Both are worth knowing before you buy rather than after, and it takes a moment at the counter or a message on WhatsApp. Where you need something for a clinic, a school or a gate rather than a household, tell us, because a no-contact forehead thermometer is a different instrument for a different job and we will say so plainly.
What We Can Honestly Tell You
Every household with a child should own one of these, and at this price there is no reason to be guessing with the back of a hand. Buy the spare battery with it and keep both in the same drawer.
Please ask about alcohol prep pads at the same time, since wiping the tip before and after every use is what keeps a shared thermometer from spreading the illness it is measuring. For the cuts and grazes that come with the same childhood, Diarim povidone-iodine is the antiseptic to have in the house, and a crepe bandage rounds out a basic first-aid box.
Is This Digital Thermometer Right for You?
Please talk to our pharmacist or our doctor before you buy if any of these apply.
- You have a baby under three months old. Any fever at all in that age group is a same-day matter. Please have our number to hand before you need it.
- You want it for a clinic, a school or a gate. Tell us. A no-contact forehead thermometer is a different instrument for that job.
- You intend to use it rectally. Buy a second one for the mouth. A thermometer used rectally stays a rectal thermometer.
- Somebody in the house is on chemotherapy or steroids. Any fever is handled differently. Please let our doctor set the thresholds with you.
- A rash that stays visible when pressed, a stiff neck, a fit, laboured breathing, floppiness or a child very hard to rouse. Urgent help now, whatever the thermometer says.
- A fever lasting beyond five days, or one you are unsure about at all. Come and see our doctor rather than watching the number.

Your Questions About This Digital Thermometer, Answered
Where can I take a reading?
Under the tongue, in the armpit, or rectally for an infant. Take it the same way every time and tell us which way, because the site changes the number.
How much difference does the site make?
A mouth reading sits roughly half a degree below a rectal one, and an armpit reading roughly half a degree below the mouth. That is about a whole degree between armpit and rectal.
What counts as a fever?
As a working guide, around 37.5 degrees Celsius or above in the armpit, around 37.8 in the mouth, and around 38.0 rectally. Please let our doctor set the figures for your household.
My baby is under three months and has a fever. What should I do?
Have the baby seen the same day, however well they otherwise seem. Any fever at that age needs assessing, and of everything here that is the one to remember.
When is a temperature an emergency?
A rash that stays visible when pressed, a stiff neck or dislike of light, a fit, fast or laboured breathing, floppiness or being very hard to rouse, or no urine for many hours. Urgent help, whatever the number.
Why is my armpit reading always low?
Usually a damp armpit, loose clothing or an arm that lifted part-way through. The tip must sit in the hollow against dry skin with the arm held down firmly.
How long after a drink can I use it in the mouth?
At least fifteen minutes after anything hot or cold, or the reading will be wrong.
Can I use the same thermometer rectally and orally?
No. A thermometer used rectally stays a rectal thermometer. Label it and buy a second one for the mouth.
Should I give paracetamol because of the number?
Give it for a child who is uncomfortable rather than for a figure on a screen. Ask our pharmacist to work the dose out by weight rather than age.
Should I sponge a feverish child with cold water?
Please do not. It causes shivering, and shivering pushes the temperature up. Dress them lightly and keep the fluids going.
How do I clean it?
Wipe the tip with an alcohol pad after every use and let it dry before capping it, and again before use if somebody else in the house has used it.
Can I rinse it under a tap?
Ask us to confirm for the model in stock. Some of these are splash-resistant at the tip only, and that decides how you are allowed to clean it.
What battery does it take?
Most of these use a small button cell. Ask our pharmacist which one yours takes and buy a spare with it, because a flat battery at two in the morning is no use to anybody.
