Omron Blood Pressure Machine

The Omron blood pressure machine helps you build the one thing a doctor can act on: a run of readings over days rather than a single number taken on a worrying afternoon. It stores up to 100 measurements, works on one touch, flags a reading above the normal range, and tells you when it has picked up an irregular heartbeat while measuring. Please send our pharmacist your upper-arm measurement in centimetres before you order.

An Omron Blood Pressure Machine That Remembers Your Readings

The Omron blood pressure machine helps you build the one thing a doctor can actually act on: a run of readings over days rather than a single number taken on a worrying afternoon. It stores up to 100 measurements, works on one touch, flags a reading above the normal range, and tells you when it has picked up an irregular heartbeat while measuring. It is an upper-arm machine, which is the kind blood pressure is properly measured on.

The memory is the reason to choose this over a simpler monitor, and it is worth understanding why. Blood pressure is not diagnosed or managed from one reading, it is managed from averages. A machine that keeps a hundred of them means you arrive at a consultation with a week of evidence instead of a number you half-remember, and that is the difference between a doctor adjusting your treatment confidently and asking you to come back in a month.

The Week That Diagnoses Anything

If our doctor has asked you to monitor at home, or you want to know where you really stand, this is the protocol, and this machine is built for it.

Measure morning and evening at about the same times for seven days, and if you take blood pressure tablets, do the morning reading before them. Two readings a minute apart on each occasion. Then discard the whole of the first day, because first-day readings run high while people get used to the machine, and average everything from day two onwards. Twenty-four readings, one average, and that is the figure that means something. Bring the machine in with you and we will go through the stored readings together.

Getting Each Reading Right

Most wrong home readings are the technique rather than the machine, and five minutes of care fixes it.

Rest quietly, seated, for five minutes first. Empty your bladder beforehand, and leave it at least half an hour after coffee, a cigarette, a heavy meal or exercise. Then sit with your back supported, feet flat on the floor, legs uncrossed, the cuff on a bare upper arm, and the arm resting on a table so the cuff sits level with your heart. Stay quiet while it runs, since talking alone pushes the reading up. Leave it for another time if you are in pain, upset, or very hot or cold.

The Cuff Has to Fit Your Arm

A cuff that is too small for the arm reads higher than the truth, and one that is too large reads lower. It is the biggest single source of error in home monitoring, and it is the reason a heavier-set person can be told they have high blood pressure when they do not.

Measure round the middle of your bare upper arm, halfway between the shoulder and the elbow, and send our pharmacist the figure in centimetres before you order. We will confirm which cuff this unit ships with and whether it covers your arm, and where it falls outside the range we will supply the larger cuff instead. Please send the figure even if you have used a home monitor before, since cuff ranges differ between machines.

The Irregular Heartbeat Symbol

When this machine finds an uneven rhythm while it is measuring, it tells you. That is a useful thing for a home monitor to do and it is worth knowing what to make of it.

A single appearance usually means very little. Movement, talking or a tense arm can all produce it. What matters is a pattern: the symbol appearing repeatedly over several days, or appearing alongside a pulse that feels fluttery or uneven when you rest two fingers on your wrist. Please bring that to our doctor, because one of the causes is an irregular rhythm called atrial fibrillation, it is common, it is often silent, and it is treatable once it is found. A monitor flagging it is a reason for a proper heart tracing rather than a reason to worry.

What the Numbers Mean at Home

Home readings run a little lower than clinic readings for most people, because clinics are stressful places, so the numbers are judged against a different line. A home average at or above 135 over 85 mmHg is the point at which our doctor will want to talk to you about high blood pressure, where the clinic figure is 140 over 90 mmHg.

Please bring the readings to our doctor rather than acting on them. Blood pressure tablets are adjusted on a pattern over weeks, and changing a dose or stopping one because of a single number is how people come to harm. A reading at or above 180 over 120 mmHg is the one to act on now: rest five minutes, measure again, and if it holds there, contact us or get to a clinic the same day. With chest pain, breathlessness, severe headache, weakness or numbness down one side, trouble speaking or a change in vision, go to hospital rather than taking another reading. Readings much lower than usual with dizziness on standing or faintness also want our doctor, since that is often the tablets.

Two People, One Machine

The memory can be kept for more than one person, which suits a household where two people are monitoring. It is worth setting up properly rather than sharing one memory between you, because two people’s readings averaged together produce a number that describes neither of them.

Ask our pharmacist to set the users up with you when you collect it, and to show you how to scroll the stored readings and how to clear a reading taken by mistake. Five minutes at the counter saves the call three weeks later, and it is also when we will confirm the warranty terms that apply to the unit you are taking.

Looking After It

Wipe the body with a dry or barely damp cloth and keep every part of it out of water. Clean the cuff with a cloth, mild soap and very little water, and let it dry fully. Keep it in its case rather than loose in a drawer, since a cuff creased in the same place for months stops wrapping evenly, and keep the tubing unkinked.

Take the batteries out if it is going unused for a long spell. And bring it in at your next visit so we can compare a reading on it against our own equipment, which is the only practical accuracy check a home monitor gets and takes two minutes.

What We Can Honestly Tell You

If you are managing diagnosed high blood pressure, or our doctor has asked you to monitor, the memory is worth the extra outlay and this is the machine we would put you on. Send us your arm measurement and we will confirm the cuff before anything ships.

For occasional checks where you are happy to write the numbers in a notebook, the Omron M1 Basic costs considerably less and carries a five-year warranty. And for a rechargeable upper-arm machine at the lower end, ask about the Moratech monitor. Our pharmacist will go through the three with you in a couple of minutes.

Is This Omron Blood Pressure Machine Right for You?

Please talk to our pharmacist or our doctor before you buy if any of these apply.

  • You have not measured your upper arm. Send us the figure in centimetres. A cuff too small for the arm reads higher than the truth.
  • You only want occasional checks. The M1 Basic costs less and will do, as long as you write the readings down.
  • The irregular heartbeat symbol keeps appearing, or your pulse feels fluttery or uneven. Please bring it to our doctor for a heart tracing.
  • You are on blood pressure tablets. Bring the readings to us. Doses are adjusted over weeks, not on one number.
  • A reading at or above 180 over 120 mmHg. Rest five minutes and measure again, and if it holds, the same day please.
  • Chest pain, breathlessness, severe headache, one-sided weakness or numbness, trouble speaking or a change in vision. Hospital, rather than another reading.

Your Questions About This Omron Blood Pressure Machine, Answered

How many readings does it store?

Up to 100, and the memory can be kept for more than one person. Ask our pharmacist to set the users up with you at the counter.

Why does the memory matter?

Because blood pressure is managed from averages rather than single readings. A hundred stored readings means you arrive at a consultation with a week of evidence.

How do I build a proper average?

Morning and evening at the same times for seven days, two readings a minute apart each time, then discard the whole first day and average from day two onwards.

Should I measure before or after my tablets?

Take the morning reading before them, and keep the same pattern every day.

How should I sit?

Rest five minutes first, then back supported, feet flat, legs uncrossed, cuff on a bare upper arm resting on a table at heart level. Stay quiet while it runs.

How do I know the cuff will fit?

Measure round the middle of your bare upper arm, halfway between shoulder and elbow, and send our pharmacist the figure. We will confirm it before anything ships.

What does the irregular heartbeat symbol mean?

The machine found an uneven rhythm while measuring. Once means little, since movement or talking can cause it. Repeatedly over several days is worth bringing to our doctor.

Should I be alarmed by it?

No. One of the causes is atrial fibrillation, which is common, often silent and treatable once found. The symbol is a reason for a heart tracing rather than a reason to worry.

What counts as high at home?

A home average at or above 135 over 85 mmHg is the point our doctor will want to discuss it. The clinic figure is 140 over 90 mmHg, because clinics push readings up.

My reading is very high. What do I do?

Rest quietly five minutes and measure again. If it holds at or above 180 over 120 mmHg, contact us or get to a clinic the same day.

When is it an emergency?

A high reading with chest pain, breathlessness, severe headache, one-sided weakness or numbness, trouble speaking or a change in vision. Hospital, rather than another reading.

Can I change my own tablets based on the readings?

Please bring them to our doctor instead. Doses are adjusted on a pattern over weeks.

What warranty comes with it?

Ask our pharmacist for the terms that apply to the unit you are taking, and we will confirm them before you pay.
