What It Will Carry, and Who Should Ask First

Solid Tyres: What You Gain and What You Give Up
Solid tyres never go flat and never puncture, so the chair is always ready and nobody has to find a pump. On tiles, concrete, paving and tarmac they are the better choice outright, which is why hospitals use them.
What you give up is cushioning. Over rough murram, stony ground or a badly broken pavement the ride is firmer and the person feels the bumps, which matters if they are frail or in pain. If the daily route is rough ground, ask us about the pneumatic-tyred chair instead, and if it is smooth floors and paving, this is the one to take.
Getting the Fit Right
Measure straight across the widest part of the hips and thighs while sitting on a firm chair, then add about 2 cm in total so there is roughly a finger’s width of clearance on each side. For the depth, aim for two or three finger-widths between the front edge of the seat and the back of the knee.
Footplates want setting so the thighs rest along the seat with the feet flat, because plates set too high slide the weight back onto the tailbone. The armrests are PVC padded and the chair is a single cross-brace frame, so it folds narrow for a car boot or a corridor cupboard. Brakes, Transfers and Kerbs
Make this the habit that never gets skipped: both brakes on before anybody moves in or out, and footplates checked and cleared first. A foot caught under a footplate causes most falls from a wheelchair, and a chair that rolls away mid-transfer causes most of the others.
Bring whoever will be pushing when you collect the chair. We go through positioning, braking, clearing the plates, getting close enough to the bed, and moving the person in the fewest movements, and we show them how to take a kerb backwards rather than forwards, which is safer and far kinder on the back.
Sitting All Day, and Looking After the Skin
If the person will be in the chair for most of the day, have the skin over the tailbone, the sitting bones, the hips and the heels looked at once a day. Redness that stays red once the pressure comes off, or a patch that is warmer, firmer, darker or more tender than the skin beside it, is the early warning, and we would far rather see it that week.
Encourage weight shifts every half hour or so, leaning forward or from side to side, and where help is needed, whoever is caring for them should reposition them regularly. On a budget chair a pressure-relieving cushion matters more rather than less, so ask our pharmacist about one at the same time.
