Children’s Manual Wheelchair: a Wheelchair for Children That Gets Them Out Again

A wheelchair for children helps a child get back to school, to church, to the clinic and out of the house with the rest of the family, pushed by a parent or self-propelled once the arms are strong enough. The Children’s Manual Wheelchair is built for everyday use at that size, with a soft cushion, padded armrests, anti-slip footplates with a calf pad, easy-lock parking brakes and a choice of colours children actually like.

The one thing that matters more than anything else on a child’s chair is the size, so please talk to us before you order. Tell us the measurement across your child’s hips, their height and their weight, and we will confirm the right seat width and have it set up before it reaches you. A chair that fits is comfortable, safe and worth having. A chair that is too wide quietly teaches a child to sit crooked, and that is far harder to undo later.

How to Measure a Child for a Wheelchair

You can do this at home in two minutes with a tape measure, and it is worth doing before you buy anything.

  • Seat width. Sit the child on a firm chair and measure straight across the widest part of the hips and thighs. Add about 2 cm in total, so there is roughly a finger’s width of clearance on each side.
  • Seat depth. Measure from the back of the bottom to the back of the knee, then take off about 5 cm, so there are two or three finger-widths between the seat edge and the back of the knee.
  • Footplate height. With the child sitting back, the thighs should rest along the seat and the feet sit flat on the plates. If the plates are too high the weight slides back onto the tailbone.
  • Write the date on it. Children grow, so measure again every few months and ask us what can be adjusted before you assume a new chair is needed.

Bring the child to the pharmacy if you would rather we measured. It takes a few minutes and we would far rather do it than have a chair come back.

Why the Width of a Wheelchair for Children Matters So Much

A chair a size too wide is the commonest mistake, because parents buy room to grow into. The trouble is that a child with space on either side will lean to one side to reach a wheel or to get comfortable, and will sit that way for hours a day while the spine is still growing.

If your child already leans, slides down in the seat, tips their head to one side or struggles to keep their feet on the plates, please come and see our doctor. Those are seating problems rather than habits, and they are usually solved with a cushion, a strap, a footplate change or a different width rather than with anything expensive.

Looking After the Skin

Any child who sits for most of the day needs the skin watched, and a parent who knows what to look for catches it early every time. Check the skin over the tailbone, the two sitting bones, the hips and the heels once a day, at bath time or bedtime.

What you are looking for is redness that stays red after the pressure comes off, or any patch that is warmer, firmer, darker or more tender than the skin around it. If you find one, come and see us the same week, and keep the child off that area in the meantime. Encourage a child who can shift their own weight to lean forward or side to side regularly, and for a child who needs help with it, lift the pressure yourself each time you reposition them.

Brakes, Footplates and the Car

Teach the child to put both brakes on before they move in or out of the chair, and get into the habit of checking the footplates are up before a transfer, because a foot caught under a plate is how most falls from a wheelchair happen. The footplates on this chair are anti-slip and have a calf pad behind them, which keeps the feet forward where they belong.

One thing about travel that every family should hear: a wheelchair must never be used as a car seat. Unless a chair is crash-tested and labelled for use as a vehicle seat, a child should be lifted out and put into a proper car seat or seat belt for the journey, with the folded chair stowed separately. Ask us about the easiest way to fold and load this one for whichever car you use.

What We Can Honestly Tell You

This chair is a practical, well-made everyday wheelchair at a fair price, and it is a good first chair for a child who needs one. For a child with significant postural needs, a progressive condition or a complex diagnosis, a proper assessment should come before anyone buys anything, and our doctor can start that.

The cushion cover is washable, the frame wipes clean, and the colours are part of the point, because a child is far more likely to use a chair they chose themselves. Tell us the measurements and the colour and we will do the rest. When the child outgrows it, our adult Manual Wheelchair is the next step up, and our MK-LY01 Manual Wheelchair is the lighter one to ask about if a parent will be lifting it into a car every day.

Is This Wheelchair Right for Your Child?

Please talk to our pharmacist or our doctor before you buy if any of these apply.

  • You have not measured the hips yet. Send us the measurement, the height and the weight, or bring the child in. The width decides everything else.
  • Your child leans, slides down, or cannot keep their feet on the plates. Come and see our doctor first. That is a seating problem and it has answers.
  • Redness that stays red, or any firm, warm or tender patch over the tailbone, hips or heels. Please bring your child in this week.
  • A progressive condition, or a child who cannot sit unsupported. Ask for an assessment before buying, so the chair matches the need.
  • You are buying for a growing child. Ask us what adjusts and we will show you, rather than buying a size too big.
  • You need it to double as a car seat. It must not be used that way. Ask us about transferring and stowing instead.

Across Africa, ask us before you order. We have sent orders to Uganda, Tanzania, Somaliland and as far as Malawi, and we will quote for Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and the rest of the continent. Tell us the destination and we will confirm any import paperwork before the parcel leaves us.

Living abroad? Order from wherever you are and we deliver to your family here in Kenya. Kenyans in the UK, the United States, Canada, South Africa and the Gulf order from us regularly for parents and relatives at home. A wheelchair for a child has to fit the person who will sit in it, so tell us their hip measurement and their weight and we will make sure the right size arrives, set it up at the house and show whoever is caring for them how to fold it, brake it and transfer safely.

Children’s Manual Wheelchair: Your Questions Answered

What size wheelchair for children should I order?

Tell us the measurement straight across your child’s hips, plus their height and weight, and we will confirm the seat width before anything ships. Or bring the child to the pharmacy and we will measure.

How do I measure the seat width myself?

Sit the child on a firm chair, measure across the widest part of the hips and thighs, and add about 2 cm in total so there is roughly a finger’s width of clearance each side.

Should I buy a bigger size so it lasts?

Please don’t. A chair that is too wide lets a child lean to one side for hours a day while the spine is growing. Ask us what adjusts on this one instead.

What weight can it take?

Tell our pharmacist your child’s weight when you order and we will confirm it against the chair before it leaves us.

What age is it for?

Size rather than age is what decides it, so give us the hip measurement and the height. Our pharmacist will match it for you.

Can a wheelchair for children be self-propelled?

Many children can, once the arms are strong enough and the chair is the right width, because over-reaching to a wheel that is too far out is what tires them. Ask us to check the fit for self-propelling.

Is the cushion washable?

Yes, the cover comes off and washes, and the frame wipes clean.

Can I choose the colour?

Yes, there are several designs. Tell us what your child wants when you order.

What should I check on the skin?

Look over the tailbone, sitting bones, hips and heels once a day. Redness that stays red after the pressure comes off, or a patch that is warmer, firmer or more tender, needs us to see it that week.

My child leans to one side. Is that the chair?

Often it is. Come and see our doctor, because a lean is usually solved with a cushion, a strap, a footplate change or a different width.

Can we use it as a car seat?

No. Lift the child into a proper car seat or seat belt and stow the folded chair separately. We will show you the easiest way to fold and load it.

Does it fold for the car?

Yes. Ask us to show whoever will be lifting it how to fold it and where to hold it.

What safety features does it have?

Easy-lock parking brakes, anti-slip footplates with a calf pad behind them, padded armrests and a solid frame. Teach the child to put both brakes on before moving in or out.
