MK894 Commode Chair: Stops the Night-Time Walk to the Bathroom
The MK894 commode chair helps someone who struggles to reach the bathroom use a toilet safely beside their own bed, with a removable pan underneath and an adjustable height so it suits the person rather than the other way round. It is the least expensive thing on this shelf and, for an older person living with poor balance, it is very often the most useful.
Here is the reason we recommend it so often. The walk to the bathroom in the dark, half asleep, in a hurry, is one of the commonest ways older people fall at home, and a fall at that age changes everything that follows. A commode chair within one step of the bed removes that journey altogether. For 7,500 shillings that is a great deal of protection.
Where to Put It, and the Light
Put the chair within one step of the bed, on the side the person gets out of, on a floor that is not slippery and not a loose rug. Clear the route between the bed and the chair completely, including slippers, a basin, a charging cable or a mat.
Then sort out the light. A torch by the pillow or a plug-in night light near the floor is as important as the chair itself, because somebody reaching in the dark for a commode they are unable to see is still at risk of falling. If the person uses a walking stick or a frame, stand it where they can reach it from the bed.
Setting the Height, Which Decides Whether They Can Get Off It
The height adjusts, and getting it right is the difference between standing up unaided and needing to be pulled up. Measure from the floor to the back of the person’s knee while they sit on a firm chair with their feet flat, and send us that figure.
When it is set correctly their feet rest flat on the floor and their knees sit roughly level with their hips, or very slightly lower. A seat set too low makes standing up far harder on the knees and the arms; set too high and the feet dangle, which is both unstable and uncomfortable. Our pharmacist will set it for you if you tell us the measurement, and we will check it with the person sitting on it if you can come in.
What It Will Carry
The published maximum user weight is 90 kg. That is the lowest limit of anything on this shelf, so please tell our pharmacist the weight of the person who will use it and let us confirm it before you order. If they are above that figure, or close to it, say so and we will show you a stronger frame instead.
We would rather lose the sale than have a frame give way under somebody at two in the morning, which is exactly when a commode is in use and exactly when nobody is there to help.
Keeping It Clean, in Under a Minute
A commode that is not cleaned properly is where the smell starts and where the household loses confidence in it. The routine is short and it needs to happen every time.
- Put a little water in the pan before use. It empties cleanly instead of sticking, and that one habit saves more scrubbing than anything else.
- Empty it straight after use, not in the morning and not at the end of the day.
- Rinse the pan and wipe the seat each day with a household disinfectant, and dry it.
- Keep hand gel on the chair for the person and for whoever helps them.
Ask our pharmacist about disposable commode liners, gloves and a suitable disinfectant when you order and we will put the lot together for you. Liners in particular make the night-time emptying far easier on whoever is doing it.
Two Things to Avoid
First, this is a commode rather than a day chair. The opening in the seat concentrates pressure around its edges onto the most vulnerable skin on the body, so use it for the toilet and move the person back to a cushioned seat afterwards. Ten or fifteen minutes is plenty, and if nothing is happening, move them and talk to our pharmacist about the constipation instead.
Second, please do not use it in the shower unless we have confirmed it is made for that, because a steel frame in daily water rusts out of sight. Ask us for a proper shower chair if that is what you need and we will order one in.
Checking the Screws, and the Skin
The parts of this chair are screwed together, and screws on any seating frame work loose with months of use and movement. Go round them with a screwdriver once a month, particularly the leg joints. It takes two minutes and it is the only maintenance this chair ever needs.
On the skin: clean gently after each use, pat dry rather than rubbing, and give attention to the skin folds and the area over the tailbone, because moisture and pressure together do more damage than either alone. Look over the tailbone, hips and heels once a day, and bring any redness that stays red, or any patch that is warmer, firmer, darker or more tender than the skin beside it, to us that week. If the skin is often damp, ask about a barrier cream.
What We Can Honestly Tell You
This is a simple, inexpensive, genuinely protective piece of equipment, and for an older person who gets up two or three times a night it is the single best-value thing in this category. It does one job, it does it well, and it makes no pretence of being a mobility aid or a chair to live in.
If the person also needs wheeling to the bathroom during the day, our MK02-102 Commode Wheelchair does both jobs in one chair. If they need a chair to spend the day in, ask about our Manual Wheelchair or the MK608GC reclining high-back wheelchair, and we will work out what the house actually needs with you.
Is This Commode Chair Right for You?
Please talk to our pharmacist or our doctor before you buy if any of these apply to you.
- The user is over 90 kg, or close to it. Tell us the weight and we will show you a stronger frame instead.
- You have not measured from the floor to the back of the knee. Send us that figure and we will set the height before it ships.
- Falls already happening at night. Please see our doctor as well. Blood pressure medicines, poor vision and sleeping tablets all contribute, and all can be reviewed.
- You want to use it in the shower. Ask us first. A steel frame in daily water rusts where you cannot see it.
- Somebody sitting on it for long stretches waiting. Please stop, and talk to us about the constipation instead.
- Redness that stays red, or a firm, warm or tender patch over the tailbone, hips or heels. Come in this week and ask about a barrier cream.

MK894 Commode Chair: Your Questions Answered
What is a commode chair for?
It gives someone a toilet beside their own bed, which removes the walk to the bathroom. The night-time walk in the dark is one of the commonest ways older people fall at home.
What weight will the MK894 carry?
The published maximum user weight is 90 kg, the lowest on this shelf. Tell our pharmacist the weight of the person who will use it and we will confirm it before you order.
How do I set the height?
Measure from the floor to the back of the person’s knee while they sit with their feet flat, and send us the figure. Their feet should rest flat and their knees sit roughly level with their hips.
Why does the height matter so much?
It decides whether they can stand up unaided. Too low makes standing far harder on the knees and arms; too high leaves the feet dangling, which is unstable.
Where should I put it?
Within one step of the bed, on the side they get out of, on a floor that is not slippery, with the route completely clear. Put a torch or a night light where they can reach it.
How do I keep it clean?
Put a little water in the pan before use so it empties cleanly, empty it straight after every use, and rinse the pan and wipe the seat daily with disinfectant.
Do you sell liners and gloves?
Yes. Ask our pharmacist for commode liners, gloves and a suitable disinfectant when you order. Liners make the night-time emptying much easier on whoever is doing it.
Can they sit on it for a while?
Ten or fifteen minutes. The opening in the seat concentrates pressure around its edges, so use it for the toilet and then move them to a cushioned seat.
Can it be used in the shower?
Please ask us first. A steel frame in daily water rusts out of sight, and we would rather order you a proper shower chair.
Does it need any maintenance?
Go round the screws with a screwdriver once a month, particularly the leg joints. They work loose with use, and that is the only upkeep it needs.
What should we watch on the skin?
Clean gently, pat dry rather than rubbing, attend to the folds and the tailbone, and look over the tailbone, hips and heels once a day.
Should we use a barrier cream?
If the skin is often damp, yes. Ask our pharmacist, because it is inexpensive and prevents a great deal of trouble.
They are falling at night already. Is a commode enough?
It helps a great deal, and please see our doctor too. Blood pressure medicines, poor vision and sleeping tablets all contribute to night falls and all can be reviewed.
