MK02-102 Commode Wheelchair: the Toilet Stops Being the Hardest Part of the Day

The MK02-102 commode wheelchair helps someone with very limited walking reach the toilet without being carried, and if the bathroom is too far or too narrow, the pan pulls out underneath so they can be helped where they are. It is a chromed steel folding wheelchair with a commode seat, and for a family doing two or three lifts a day it changes the whole shape of the day.

That is the honest reason people buy this chair. Toileting is the task that most often defeats a household caring for somebody at home, and it is what turns into bedpans, missed trips and the loss of dignity that follows. One chair that wheels and also serves as a commode removes most of that at once, and it does it for the price of a single visit from a nurse.

Measure Your Toilet Before You Order

This is the step people skip and then regret. If you want to wheel the chair over the toilet and use the pan out, measure the height from the floor to the top of your toilet bowl, and the width across the pedestal, and send us both figures with your order. We will confirm that the chair clears your toilet before anything ships.

Measure your bathroom doorway as well, and the space beside the toilet, because a chair that fits over the bowl is no use unless it can also turn in the room. Our pharmacist will go through it with you in a couple of minutes, and if the bathroom is simply too tight we will say so and set the chair up to be used in the bedroom with the pan in place instead.

The One Rule About Sitting on a Commode Seat

A commode seat has an opening cut out of it, and that opening concentrates pressure around its edges onto exactly the skin that is most vulnerable. So use this chair for the toilet, then move the person back into a cushioned seat.

Please do not leave somebody sitting on it waiting for their bowels to open, which is the commonest mistake and the one most likely to cause a pressure sore. Ten or fifteen minutes is plenty. If nothing is happening, move them, and talk to our pharmacist about the constipation instead, because that is the problem to treat rather than the waiting.

Keeping the Pan Clean, Which Decides Everything Else

A commode left uncleaned is where the smell comes from and where infection starts, and the household stops using it. The routine takes under a minute and it is worth insisting on from the first day.

  • Put a little water in the pan before use. It empties cleanly instead of sticking, which is the single most useful thing anybody will tell you about a commode.
  • Empty it straight after use, every time. Not later, not at the end of the day.
  • Rinse the pan and wipe the seat down daily, with a household disinfectant, and dry it.
  • Wash your hands before and after, and keep a bottle of hand gel on the chair for whoever is helping.

Ask our pharmacist about disposable commode liners, gloves and a suitable disinfectant when you order, and we will put the lot together for you.

Washing, Drying and the Skin

Moisture and pressure together do far more damage than either alone, which is why the drying matters as much as the washing. After each use, clean the skin gently, pat it dry rather than rubbing, and pay particular attention to the skin folds and the area over the tailbone.

Check the skin over the tailbone, the sitting bones, the hips and the heels once a day. Redness that stays red after the pressure comes off, or a patch that is warmer, firmer, darker or more tender than the skin beside it, wants bringing to us that week. If the skin is damp often, ask our pharmacist about a barrier cream, which is cheap and prevents a great deal of trouble.

Brakes, Footrests and Transfers

Both brakes on before anybody moves, every time, and footplates checked and cleared first. The footrests on this chair are fixed rather than swing-away, so the chair needs positioning more carefully for a transfer than a chair with footrests that move out of the way. It is entirely manageable once somebody has shown you the angle to come in at.

So bring whoever does the lifting when you collect the chair. We will go through positioning it against the bed, locking both brakes, clearing the plates, and bringing the person across in the fewest movements, and we will show you how to fold the chair for storage. That ten minutes protects the carer’s back as much as the patient.

What We Can Honestly Tell You

This is the chair to buy when toileting is the problem rather than mobility in general, and for a household where somebody is being lifted several times a day it earns its price back in a fortnight. The frame is chromed steel and folds, so it stores against a wall when it is not needed.

If you need a commode beside the bed at night and not a wheelchair, our MK894 Commode Chair costs a third of this and is the right answer. If the person needs to rest in the chair through the day, the MK608GC reclining high-back wheelchair is the one to ask about, and for general daily mobility our Manual Wheelchair is the better chair to live in.

Is This Commode Wheelchair Right for You?

Please talk to our pharmacist or our doctor before you buy if any of these apply to you.

  • You have not measured your toilet and bathroom doorway. Send us the bowl height, the pedestal width and the doorway width and we will confirm it fits.
  • You have not told us the user’s weight. Send it before you order and we will confirm the chair’s limit against it in writing.
  • Somebody is sitting on the commode for long stretches waiting. Please stop, and talk to us about the constipation instead.
  • Redness that stays red, or a firm, warm or tender patch over the tailbone, hips or heels. Come in this week, and ask about a barrier cream.
  • Straining, pain, blood, or a change in bowel or bladder habit. Please see our doctor. A commode manages the symptom and the cause is worth finding.
  • Nobody has been shown how to transfer. Bring them with you. Fixed footrests make the technique worth learning properly.

MK02-102 Commode Wheelchair: Your Questions Answered

How does a commode wheelchair work?

It is a folding wheelchair with a commode seat. Wheel the person to the toilet and use it over the bowl with the pan out, or leave the pan in and help them where they are.

Will it fit over my toilet?

Measure the height from the floor to the top of the bowl and the width across the pedestal, send us both, and we will confirm it before anything ships.

What weight will it carry?

Tell our pharmacist the weight of the person who will use it and we will confirm the chair’s limit against it in writing before you order.

How long can somebody sit on the commode seat?

Ten or fifteen minutes. The opening in the seat concentrates pressure around its edges, so use it for the toilet and then move them back to a cushioned seat.

What if nothing happens while they are sitting there?

Move them, and talk to our pharmacist about the constipation. Waiting on a commode seat is the commonest cause of a pressure sore in home care.

How do I keep the pan clean?

Put a little water in it before use so it empties cleanly, empty it straight after every use, and rinse the pan and wipe the seat daily with disinfectant.

Do you sell liners and gloves?

Yes. Ask our pharmacist for disposable commode liners, gloves and a suitable disinfectant when you order and we will put the lot together.

What should we do about the skin?

Clean gently, pat dry rather than rubbing, and pay attention to the skin folds and the tailbone. Moisture with pressure does far more damage than either alone.

Should we use a barrier cream?

If the skin is often damp, yes. Ask our pharmacist, because it is cheap and prevents a great deal of trouble.

Do the footrests swing away?

They are fixed, so the chair needs positioning more carefully for a transfer. Bring whoever does the lifting and we will show you the angle to come in at.

Does it fold?

Yes, so it stores against a wall when it is not needed.

Can it be used as an everyday wheelchair?

For short trips, yes, but it is built around toileting. For daily mobility our Manual Wheelchair is the better chair to live in, so ask us about both.

Do I need a commode and a wheelchair, or just this?

Tell our pharmacist about the house, the bathroom and who is helping, and we will tell you honestly. Sometimes one chair is enough and sometimes a bedside commode is the cheaper answer.
