Diarim Povidone Iodine 10% 100ml

Diarim povidone-iodine helps a graze, a shallow cut or a scraped knee heal without turning into something that needs antibiotics, by killing the bacteria, viruses and fungi on the skin around it. It is a 10% aqueous solution in a 100 ml bottle, the antiseptic hospitals use before they cut, and it is gentle enough to go on broken skin, which alcohol is not. Please tell our pharmacist if anybody in the house has a thyroid condition or is pregnant.

Diarim Povidone-Iodine: the Antiseptic to Keep in the House

Diarim povidone-iodine helps a graze, a shallow cut or a scraped knee heal without turning into something that needs antibiotics, by killing the bacteria, viruses and fungi on the skin around it. It is a 10% aqueous solution in a 100 ml bottle, it is the antiseptic hospitals use before they cut, and it is gentle enough to go on broken skin, which alcohol is not.

It has two quite different jobs and it is worth knowing which one you are doing. On intact skin it is a preparation: you paint it on before an injection or a procedure and let it dry. On a small wound it is a treatment: you clean the area, apply it, and let it dry. The rules for a large or deep wound are different again, and that is the next section.

How to Use Povidone-Iodine Solution Properly

For a small or superficial wound, clean the area first with clean water, then apply the solution at full strength with a clean swab or gauze and let it dry. Cover it if the wound needs covering. Repeat as our pharmacist or our doctor advises rather than on a schedule of your own.

Before an injection or a finger prick, paint it on the intact skin and let it dry completely before the needle goes in. The drying is the point: the antiseptic does its work as it dries, and a wet surface achieves less. For an extensive or deep wound, or to irrigate one, the solution is diluted one part to three parts of sterile water or sterile saline and then rinsed off thoroughly afterwards. Please let us do that with you rather than attempting it at home, because a wound that needs irrigating is a wound that needs looking at.

Please Do Not Use It Every Day for Weeks

Most people are never told this, and it is why a pharmacist rather than a shop should be handing the bottle over. Iodine is absorbed through skin, and far more so through broken skin, so repeated use over large areas or for long periods can push enough iodine into the body to disturb the thyroid gland.

So use it for as long as the wound needs it and stop, rather than treating it as a daily wash. Keep it to the area that needs it rather than painting a wide margin. Frequent use also dries and irritates the skin, which slows the very healing you are trying to help. Where a wound still needs antiseptic after several days, that is the point to bring it to us rather than to carry on, because a wound that is not settling needs a look rather than more iodine.

Who Should Speak to Our Doctor First

There are four situations where povidone-iodine needs a conversation rather than a purchase, and all four are common.

Anybody with a thyroid condition, or a history of one, or a goitre, because of the absorption described above. Anybody taking lithium, where regular use is best avoided for the same reason. Anybody who has ever reacted to iodine or to an iodine-containing contrast dye. And newborn babies: it should not be used on a premature baby or a very small newborn at all, and it needs care in a full-term newborn, because an infant’s thyroid is particularly sensitive to absorbed iodine. In pregnancy and while breastfeeding, use it only where it is genuinely needed and keep it off large areas, since iodine crosses the placenta and passes into breast milk.

What It Must Not Be Mixed With

Povidone-iodine is chemically fussy, and combining antiseptics does harm rather than good. Please use it on its own rather than alongside anything else on the same skin.

Never use it with a mercury-containing antiseptic, because the combination can damage tissue. Hydrogen peroxide cancels much of its effect, and so do silver-containing preparations. If you have used another antiseptic on the area, rinse and let the skin dry before this one goes on. Keep it away from the eyes, and if any does get in, rinse immediately and generously with water. And one practical note: it stains skin, clothing and bedding a strong brown, so put a towel down and keep it off anything you care about.

One Thing to Tell Any Doctor or Laboratory

Iodine on the skin can interfere with thyroid tests and with iodine-based scans for a week or two afterwards, and it can occasionally cause a false positive on urine or stool tests for blood or sugar.

So if you have been using this and you are sent for thyroid blood tests, a thyroid scan, or any investigation involving radioactive iodine, please say so. It is a small thing that saves a repeated test or a confusing result, and almost nobody thinks to mention it. Our pharmacist will note it for you if you tell us when you buy.

When a Wound Needs More Than Antiseptic

An antiseptic handles the surface. It does nothing for a wound that is too deep, too dirty or too big to heal on its own, and reaching for a bottle instead of a clinic is how small injuries become serious ones.

Please come and see our doctor the same day for a wound that keeps bleeding, one deep enough to gape or to need closing, a puncture wound or anything caused by a nail, a tooth or an animal, a wound holding dirt or grit that stays after rinsing, a burn larger than the palm of the hand or any burn to a face, hand or joint, and any wound in somebody with diabetes or poor circulation. Come back for spreading redness, heat, swelling, increasing pain, pus, a red streak running up the limb, or a fever, since those are signs an infection has taken hold. And please check whether a tetanus vaccination is due, which we can advise on.

What We Can Honestly Tell You

This is one of the most useful bottles you can own, and at this size and price there is no reason for a household not to have one. Ask our pharmacist to show you how much to use the first time, because people routinely use far too much and stain everything within reach.

It belongs in a box with the other things you will want at the same moment: alcohol prep pads for preparing intact skin before an injection, a crepe bandage for holding a dressing in place, and a digital thermometer, because a fever is the first sign that a wound is losing. Please also ask us about gauze, plasters, tape and a tetanus check.

Is This Antiseptic Right for You?

Please talk to our pharmacist or our doctor before you buy if any of these apply.

  • A thyroid condition, a history of one, a goitre, or lithium treatment. Regular or prolonged use is best avoided. Please speak to us first.
  • Any previous reaction to iodine or to an iodine contrast dye. Tell us before you buy.
  • A newborn baby. It should not be used on a premature or very small newborn at all, and needs care in a full-term one.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding. Only where genuinely needed, and keep it off large areas. Iodine reaches the baby.
  • You were planning to use it daily, or over a large area, for weeks. Please do not. Use it while the wound needs it and stop.
  • A wound that gapes, keeps bleeding, is a puncture or a bite, holds grit that stays after rinsing, or is spreading redness, pus or fever. Our doctor, the same day.

Your Questions About Diarim Povidone-Iodine, Answered

What is it used for?

Antisepsis of skin, intact or broken. On intact skin it prepares the site before an injection or procedure; on a small wound it treats the surface.

How do I apply it to a graze?

Clean the area with clean water, apply the solution at full strength with a clean swab or gauze, and let it dry. Cover the wound if it needs covering.

Does it need diluting?

Not for a small wound. For an extensive or deep wound, or to irrigate one, it is diluted one part to three parts sterile water or saline and rinsed off afterwards. Please let us do that with you.

Can I use it every day?

Use it while the wound needs it and then stop. Repeated use over large areas or for long periods can push enough iodine into the body to disturb the thyroid.

Who should check with the doctor first?

Anyone with a thyroid condition or goitre, anyone on lithium, anyone who has reacted to iodine or an iodine contrast dye, newborn babies, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Can it be used on a newborn?

Not on a premature or very small newborn, and with care in a full-term one. An infant’s thyroid is particularly sensitive to absorbed iodine.

Is it safe in pregnancy?

Only where genuinely needed, and kept off large areas, because iodine crosses the placenta and passes into breast milk. Please ask us first.

Can I use it with another antiseptic?

Please use it on its own. Mercury-containing antiseptics can damage tissue in combination, and hydrogen peroxide or silver preparations cancel much of its effect.

What if it gets in the eyes?

Rinse immediately and generously with water, and tell us.

Why does it stain everything?

Iodine stains skin, clothing and bedding brown. Put a towel down, use less than you think, and keep it off anything you care about.

Does it affect blood tests?

It can interfere with thyroid tests and iodine scans for a week or two, and occasionally cause a false positive on urine or stool tests. Tell the doctor or laboratory you have used it.

When does a wound need more than antiseptic?

If it gapes, keeps bleeding, is a puncture or a bite, holds grit that stays after rinsing, or is a burn bigger than your palm. Same day, please.

How do I know a wound is infected?

Spreading redness, heat, swelling, increasing pain, pus, a red streak running up the limb, or a fever. Come back to us.
