Betadine Antiseptic Solution: the Brown Bottle From the Operating Theatre
Betadine antiseptic solution helps keep a wound or an operation site from becoming infected, which is why it is the bottle you have seen painted onto skin before surgery and dabbed onto a dressing afterwards. It is a 10% povidone-iodine aqueous solution in a 125 ml bottle, it acts against bacteria, viruses and fungi, and it is gentle enough to go on broken skin, which alcohol is not.
This particular bottle is out of stock at the moment, so please send our pharmacist a message. We will tell you when it is back, and in the meantime we will offer you the same medicine at the same strength under a different brand name, because the active ingredient is what does the work and nobody should be left waiting for a label. That is the honest answer and we would rather give it than let you sit on an empty page.
How Betadine Antiseptic Solution Is Used
Apply it at full strength and spread it evenly over the area rather than dabbing it in one spot, then let it dry. Before an injection or an incision, paint it on and wait until it has dried, because the antiseptic does its work as it dries and a wet surface has not finished being disinfected.
Two instructions go with post-operative use and both matter. Cover the whole treatment area rather than part of it. And do not let the solution pool in skin folds or collect underneath somebody lying down, because iodine sitting against skin for hours irritates it. Wash off any excess before an occlusive dressing goes on top. For a larger or deeper wound, please follow what our doctor has told you rather than a general instruction, since those wounds are usually irrigated with a diluted solution and then rinsed.
Four Reasons to Speak to Our Doctor First
Povidone-iodine is a medicine rather than a household cleaner, and four groups of people should have a word with us before using it.
Anybody who has reacted to iodine, to povidone, or to an iodine contrast dye. Anybody with a thyroid condition, a history of abnormal thyroid function, or a goitre. Anybody taking lithium, where regular use is best avoided. And newborn babies: it should not be used on a premature or very small newborn at all, and needs care in a full-term one, because an infant’s thyroid is especially sensitive to absorbed iodine. In pregnancy and while breastfeeding, use it only where it is genuinely needed and keep it off large areas, since iodine crosses the placenta and passes into breast milk.
Why Prolonged Use Over Large Areas Is Different
Iodine is absorbed through skin, and considerably more through broken skin, so the amount reaching the body depends on how much skin is covered and for how long. On a graze for a few days that is of no consequence. Over a large wound or a burn, repeatedly, for weeks, it becomes one.
So the rule is simple: use it while the area needs it and then stop, keep it to the area that needs it, and come back to us rather than carrying on for weeks. Frequent use also dries and irritates skin, which works against the healing it is meant to protect. Where a wound still needs antiseptic after several days, that is the point to have it looked at rather than to buy a second bottle.
What It Must Not Be Combined With
Please use it on its own rather than alongside another antiseptic on the same skin, because combining them generally does harm rather than good.
Never with a mercury-containing antiseptic, where the combination can damage tissue. Hydrogen peroxide cancels much of its effect and so do silver-containing preparations. If something else has been used on the area, rinse and let the skin dry first. Keep it out of the eyes and rinse immediately and generously with water if any gets in. And expect the staining: iodine turns skin, clothing and bedding a strong brown, so put a towel down and use less than you think you need.
One Thing to Mention at the Laboratory
Iodine on the skin can interfere with thyroid blood tests and with iodine-based scans for a week or two afterwards, and it can occasionally produce a false positive on urine or stool tests for blood or sugar.
So if you have been using this and you are sent for thyroid tests, a thyroid scan or anything involving radioactive iodine, please say so. It saves a repeated test and a confusing result, almost nobody thinks to mention it, and our pharmacist will make a note for you if you tell us when you collect.
When a Wound Needs a Doctor Rather Than a Bottle
An antiseptic works on the surface. It does nothing for a wound too deep, too dirty or too large to heal on its own, and reaching for a bottle instead of a clinic is how a small injury becomes a serious one.
Please see our doctor the same day for a wound that keeps bleeding, one deep enough to gape or to need closing, a puncture wound or anything from a nail, a tooth or an animal, grit that stays after rinsing, a burn larger than the palm of a hand or any burn to a face, hand or joint, and any wound at all in somebody with diabetes or poor circulation. Come back for spreading redness, heat, swelling, increasing pain, pus, a red streak running up the limb, or a fever, since those mean an infection has taken hold. And please ask us whether a tetanus vaccination is due.
What We Can Honestly Tell You
Betadine is a good product and a name people trust for sound reasons. While it is unavailable, the honest answer is that povidone-iodine is povidone-iodine: our Diarim 10% solution is the same active ingredient at the same strength and costs considerably less per millilitre, and our pharmacist will say so rather than let you wait.
Whichever bottle you end up with, it belongs in a box with the things you will want at the same moment: alcohol prep pads for preparing intact skin before an injection, a crepe bandage for holding a dressing and supporting a joint, and a digital thermometer, because a fever is the first sign a wound is losing. Ask us about gauze, plasters and tape too.
Is This Antiseptic Right for You?
Please talk to our pharmacist or our doctor before you buy if any of these apply.
- Any previous reaction to iodine, povidone or an iodine contrast dye. Tell us before you use it.
- A thyroid condition, a history of abnormal thyroid function, a goitre, or lithium treatment. Regular or prolonged use is best avoided.
- A newborn baby. Not on a premature or very small newborn, and with care in a full-term one.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding. Only where genuinely needed, and off large areas. Iodine reaches the baby.
- A large wound or burn, or use planned over weeks. Please come back to us rather than carrying on.
- A wound that gapes or keeps bleeding, a puncture or a bite, grit that stays after rinsing, or spreading redness, pus or fever. Our doctor, the same day.

Your Questions About Betadine Antiseptic Solution, Answered
It is out of stock. What can I use instead?
Our Diarim 10% povidone-iodine is the same active ingredient at the same strength and costs considerably less per millilitre. Message our pharmacist and we will sort it out.
What is in it?
10% povidone-iodine as an aqueous solution, in a 125 ml bottle. It acts against bacteria, viruses and fungi.
What is it used for?
Antisepsis of skin and wounds, before and after surgery or a minor procedure, and on minor wounds and abrasions.
Do I dilute it?
Not for a small wound or for skin preparation, where it is used at full strength. Larger or deeper wounds are usually irrigated with a diluted solution, so please follow what our doctor has told you.
Why does it need to dry?
The antiseptic does its work as it dries, so a wet surface has not finished being disinfected. Paint it on and wait before an injection or an incision.
Why should it not pool in skin folds?
Iodine sitting against skin for hours irritates it. Cover the whole area evenly, and wash off excess before an occlusive dressing goes on.
Who should check with the doctor first?
Anyone who has reacted to iodine or povidone, anyone with thyroid trouble or a goitre, anyone on lithium, newborn babies, and women pregnant or breastfeeding.
Can it be used on a newborn?
Not on a premature or very small newborn, and with care in a full-term one, because an infant’s thyroid is especially sensitive to absorbed iodine.
Can I use it for weeks?
Use it while the area needs it and then stop. Prolonged use over large areas lets more iodine reach the body, and frequent use dries and irritates skin.
Can I use it with another antiseptic?
Please use it on its own. Mercury-containing antiseptics can damage tissue in combination, and hydrogen peroxide or silver preparations cancel much of its effect.
What if it gets in my eyes?
Rinse immediately and generously with water, and tell us.
Will it stain?
Yes, a strong brown on skin, clothing and bedding. Put a towel down and use less than you think you need.
Does it affect blood tests?
It can interfere with thyroid tests and iodine scans for a week or two, and occasionally cause a false positive on urine or stool tests. Mention it at the laboratory.
