Recare LH Ovulation Test: One Cassette, for the Day You Expect the Surge
This Recare LH ovulation test helps you confirm that your fertile window has arrived, by detecting the hormone surge that triggers an egg’s release about a day and a half later. It is a single cassette with a dropper, read in about 5 minutes.
Luteinising hormone sits at a low level in urine throughout the month and rises sharply just before ovulation. Catching that rise is what tells you to try now rather than next week. The cassette uses a dropper rather than a midstream stick, so you collect a small sample and place a few drops into the well, which many women find easier to control and easier to read.
One Test, and How Many You Actually Need
This is a pack of 1, and an ovulation test is used repeatedly rather than once, so it is worth understanding before you order. You test daily from a start day until the surge appears, which usually takes between 5 and 10 tests in a cycle, and more where cycles are irregular.
So a single cassette earns its place in two situations. The first is where you already track your cycle closely, know roughly when you ovulate, and want one test to confirm the day. The second is a trial run, to see how you get on with the format before buying a larger pack.
For a full cycle of testing, the Accufast midstream ovulation test is the one to ask our pharmacist about. Tell us your cycle length and we will work out how many tests you need before you order, which is a better conversation than discovering on day 14 that you have run out.
When to Use Your Recare LH Ovulation Test
Count day 1 as the first day of your period and test about 4 days before you expect to ovulate: around day 10 or 11 on a 28-day cycle, earlier on a shorter one and later on a longer one. If you are using a single cassette, place it on the day you most expect the surge.
Test in the afternoon rather than first thing, which is the reverse of a pregnancy test. The surge usually starts in the early hours and takes about 12 hours to reach urine, so an early morning sample often misses one that began overnight. Use the second urine of the day or later, and keep fluids light for 2 hours beforehand, since a dilute sample weakens the line.
Collect in a clean dry container, draw the sample into the dropper, place the number of drops the leaflet specifies into the well, lay the cassette flat and read within the stated time.
What the Lines Mean
An ovulation test is read differently from any other test, and this catches almost everybody first time. The control line, C, confirms the cassette worked. The test line, T, reflects the hormone level.
Because a little of this hormone is present all month, a faint T line is a NEGATIVE. It is positive only when T is as dark as C, or darker. A blank C line means the cassette has failed and needs replacing. On a positive, have sex that day and the next, and earlier if you can, because sperm survive up to 5 days while the egg survives only about 12 to 24 hours once released.
What a Surge Does and What It Leaves Open
A positive tells you the hormone has surged, which is a strong signal that ovulation is coming. It stops short of proving an egg was released, and there are three situations where this format reads poorly, all worth knowing before you rely on it.
Polycystic ovary syndrome. The hormone can sit high throughout the month or surge several times, so these tests often read positive again and again without ovulation following. In PCOS they are a poor tool, and our doctor can track a cycle in a way that works.
Fertility medicines. Several act on this hormone directly, and a trigger injection affects the reading outright. Follow your clinic rather than a cassette.
A surge with no egg. It happens occasionally. If you find clear positives month after month with no pregnancy, that is worth a blood test taken at the right point in the cycle, which our doctor can arrange, rather than another year of sticks.
And once you have timed the month, the next test is a different one. A midstream pregnancy test gives a reliable answer from the day a period is late, and our pharmacist will set up the folic acid every woman trying to conceive should already be taking.
Is This Ovulation Test Right for You?
A single cassette suits a woman who knows her cycle and wants to confirm the day. Please ring our pharmacist or our doctor if any of these apply:
- You have polycystic ovary syndrome. Repeated positives are common and usually mean the test rather than a fertile window.
- Your cycles are irregular or absent, so there is no day to count from. One cassette is unlikely to land on the right day, and our doctor can find out what is behind it.
- You take fertility medicine or have had a trigger injection. The reading is affected directly.
- You are on hormonal contraception. It stops ovulation, so a test tells you nothing while you take it.
- You have been trying for 12 months, or 6 months if you are 35 or over. Please see our doctor, with your partner, since roughly half of difficulty conceiving involves a male factor.
Our pharmacists will work out your start day and how many tests your cycle needs, and our doctor is here when testing has gone on long enough to want answers instead.

FAQs
Is one cassette enough to find my ovulation?
Usually not on its own. You test daily from a start day until the surge appears, which takes between 5 and 10 tests in a typical cycle and more where cycles are irregular. A single cassette suits a woman who already tracks her cycle and wants to confirm the expected day, or who wants to try the format before buying a larger pack. Tell our pharmacist your cycle length and we will work out how many you need.
On which day of my cycle should I use it?
Count day 1 as the first day of your period and test about 4 days before you expect to ovulate — around day 10 or 11 on a 28-day cycle, earlier on a shorter one, later on a longer one. With a single cassette, use it on the day you most expect the surge.
Should I use first morning urine?
No, and this is the reverse of a pregnancy test. The surge usually begins in the early hours and takes about 12 hours to reach urine, so an early morning sample often misses one that started overnight. Use the second urine of the day or later, ideally in the afternoon, and keep fluids light for 2 hours beforehand.
How do I know the result is positive?
The control line, C, confirms the cassette worked. The test line, T, reflects the hormone level. Because a little of this hormone is present all month, A FAINT T LINE IS A NEGATIVE. It is positive only when T is as dark as C, or darker. A blank C line means the cassette has failed.
I have a positive. When should we try?
That day and the next day, and the day before if you managed it. Ovulation follows roughly 24 to 36 hours after the surge begins, the egg survives about 12 to 24 hours once released, and sperm live in the body for up to 5 days. Sperm already waiting when the egg arrives is what you want, so waiting a day is the wrong instinct.
How many drops does the cassette take?
The number is in the leaflet in your pack, usually 3, placed in the round well with the dropper held upright. Collect in a clean dry container, lay the cassette flat, and read within the stated time.
Why do I keep getting positives?
If you have polycystic ovary syndrome, the hormone can sit high all month or surge several times, so these tests read positive repeatedly without ovulation following. They are a poor tool in PCOS. Please speak to our doctor, who can track your cycle properly and treat what is behind it.
Does a positive prove an egg was released?
It is a strong signal rather than proof. A surge can occasionally happen with no egg following. If you get clear positives month after month and no pregnancy, our doctor can confirm ovulation with a blood test taken at the right point in the cycle, which is more use than another year of sticks.
Can I use it while on the pill or an implant?
There is no point while you are using them, because hormonal contraception stops ovulation. Test once you have stopped and your cycles have returned, and ask our pharmacist how long that usually takes with the method you were on.
Will medicines affect it?
Several fertility medicines act on this hormone directly, and a trigger injection affects the reading outright. Antibiotics, painkillers and most other medicines have no effect. Bring your list to our pharmacist and we will check it.
What is the difference between this and the midstream test?
The hormone and the chemistry are identical. The cassette uses a dropper and a collected sample, which many women find easier to control and easier to read. The midstream stick is held in the stream and needs no container. The practical difference is the pack: a cycle of testing needs several tests, so ask our pharmacist which format works out better for the number you need.
When should we stop testing and see someone?
After 12 months of trying under 35, or 6 months at 35 and over, and sooner if periods are very irregular or absent, or if 3 cycles of testing have found no surge at all. Please see our doctor and bring your partner, because roughly half of difficulty conceiving involves a male factor.
Should I be taking anything while trying?
Folic acid, starting now rather than when a pregnancy test turns positive. Every woman who could become pregnant needs 400 micrograms a day, and it does its most important work in the first few weeks, before anybody is certain. Our pharmacist will set it up and can add a fertility supplement if you want one.
