The brief, pant or pad worn on the body is what keeps the skin dry, and the underpad is what means you are changing a sheet instead of replacing a mattress. Using It Properly
- Absorbent side up. The soft white side faces the person and the plastic side faces the mattress. It gets done the wrong way round more often than you would think, usually in the dark.
- Put it under the sheet or directly on it, whichever the person prefers. Directly on the sheet catches more; under the sheet feels better to lie on.
- It is single use. Change it when it is wet, bin it, and put a fresh one down. These are not washable and will fall apart if you try.
- Do not use it to slide or lift anybody. It will tear, and a tear in the middle of a transfer is how people get hurt. Ask us about a proper slide sheet if that is what you need.
- Change it as soon as it is wet, and look at the skin at the same time. The two jobs belong together.
For the Weeks After Childbirth
The bleeding after a birth is heavier than most first-time mothers expect and continues for a good while, often more than ten days. An underpad on the bed for those first nights saves the mattress, saves the laundry, and saves a tired woman worrying about it at three in the morning.
It is worth knowing what is normal and what is not, because the volume makes it hard to judge. Please contact our doctor or go to your clinic the same day if you are soaking through a maternity pad in under an hour, if you pass clots larger than a golf ball, if the bleeding suddenly increases after it had settled, if there is a foul smell, or if you have a fever, dizziness or faintness. Looking After the Skin
Whoever is lying on it still needs the skin looked at once a day, and it takes a minute. Check the tailbone, the two sitting bones, the hips and the heels.
Redness that stays red after the pressure comes off, or a patch that is warmer, firmer, darker or more tender than the skin beside it, is the early sign and wants our attention that week. At every change, wash gently, pat dry rather than rubbing with attention to the skin folds, and apply a thin layer of barrier cream. And one point to be clear about: preventing a pressure sore is beyond what any underpad can do. What prevents one is repositioning the person regularly, a pressure-relieving mattress or cushion, and that daily look.
Where Else They Earn Their Keep
Most people buy them for a bed and then find other uses. On an armchair or a wheelchair seat for somebody who sits most of the day. On a car seat for a long journey. Under a child who has started bedwetting again, which is far less humiliating than a rubber sheet. Under a dressing change or a wash, to keep the bed dry while you work. And in a hospital bag, because wards are glad of them.
They are also worth keeping in the house for anybody recovering from surgery, where a few nights of leaking is likely and nobody wants to think about it in advance. At this price, a pack in the cupboard is cheap peace of mind.
