How These Disposable Bed Liners Measure Up
The 180 by 80 cm figure is the sheet laid out flat, so it is worth knowing where that material goes: 90 by 80 cm of absorbent zone across the middle of the bed, and a 45 by 80 cm wing on each side.
That makes it wide enough for a standard single mattress and long enough across to cover the hips, buttocks and thighs of an adult lying on it. Measure the width of the mattress before you order and send our pharmacist the figure, because a wider bed leaves less wing to tuck under and the liner then holds less firmly. For a double bed we would usually suggest positioning it on the person’s side rather than centring it.
Placing the Liner and Tucking the Wings
Lay the liner across the bed with the soft, cloth-like side facing upwards and the plastic-backed side down. Position the absorbent middle zone under the hips and buttocks rather than centred on the length of the bed, since that is where the urine arrives.
Then lift each side of the mattress in turn and tuck the wing well under, so a good hand’s width of material is held by the weight of the mattress on each side. Smooth the whole surface completely flat afterwards, because a crease both leaks and presses into the skin of somebody lying still for hours. A liner can go directly against the skin or under the bottom sheet, and under the sheet usually feels more like an ordinary bed to somebody who is awake and aware.
Single Use, and Twenty to a Pack
These are disposable and single use. They go into the bin rather than the wash, and a disposable liner put through a washing machine comes out destroyed with its absorbent core shed through the drum.
Twenty liners is about three weeks at one a night, so a monthly supply is a pack and a half. What the Liner Does, and What the Skin Still Needs
A liner keeps urine off the mattress and away from the surface of the skin. That is the whole of its job, and it is worth being clear about, because skin damage in somebody who lies in bed comes from moisture and pressure together.
So at every change, wash gently with warm water or a mild cleanser, pat the skin completely dry rather than rubbing, and apply a thin layer of barrier cream to any redness. Look at the buttocks, the base of the spine, the hips and the heels each time. Reposition the person regularly through the day and the night, keep the heels clear of the mattress where you can, and please ask us about a pressure-relieving mattress overlay or cushion, which is a separate product doing a job no liner can do. Redness that stays after the pressure comes off, broken skin, a blister, or a dark or purple patch needs our doctor the same day.
Please Have the Cause Reviewed
Where somebody has started wetting the bed, or has got noticeably worse over recent weeks, that change deserves looking into rather than only being managed. A urine infection, constipation, uncontrolled diabetes, a newly started medicine and a prostate problem are all common causes, and several of them respond quickly.
Please come and see us if the bedwetting is new or worsening, if the urine is cloudy, strong-smelling or bloodstained, if there is fever or new confusion, if the person is in pain, or if the bladder feels full after passing urine. Sudden inability to pass urine at all needs the same day. Where a child over the age of five is wetting the bed, please bring them to our doctor as well as buying liners, because bedwetting at that age is common and treatable.
