What Wellkid Multivitamin Liquid Does

Wellkid Multivitamin Liquid helps your child’s immune system work normally and helps their bones grow properly, in one orange-flavoured teaspoonful a day for children from 4 to 12 years.

This is Vitabiotics’ children’s multivitamin, in a 150 ml bottle with a childproof cap. It carries sixteen nutrients, and the useful thing about it is that every single one of them is present in an amount large enough for its recognised benefits to be stated — which is rarer than you would think on a children’s liquid. Four of those benefits are recognised specifically for children rather than borrowed from adult guidance. Please read the iron and allergy notes further down before you buy.

What Is in Each 5 ml Spoonful

From Vitabiotics’ own panel, with the percentage of the daily reference intake beside each one, because the percentages are what make the benefits sayable.

Vitamin D, 10 µg (400 IU) — 200%. The most generous nutrient here relative to its reference intake, and the one carrying the children’s claims.

Vitamin B12, 2.5 µg — 100%. A full daily amount.

Thiamin 0.7 mg (64%) · Riboflavin 0.8 mg (57%) · Vitamin B6 0.8 mg (57%) · Niacin 8 mg (50%) · Folic acid 100 µg (50%) · Pantothenic acid 2 mg (33%). The B group, well covered throughout.

Vitamin E, 5 mg (42%) · Vitamin A, 200 µg RE (25%) · Vitamin C, 12 mg (15%).

Zinc 4 mg (40%) · Iron 5 mg (36%) · Iodine 40 µg (27%) · Copper 150 µg (15%).

Plus 500 mg of malt extract, which is where the barley comes from, and the liquid is sweetened with cane sugar and glucose. Natural orange flavour, suitable for vegetarians, with no artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners, no dairy, lactose or yeast, and no alcohol preservative.

Sixteen Nutrients, and Four Benefits Recognised for Children

A nutrient benefit may only be stated when a daily dose supplies at least 15% of the reference intake. Every nutrient in this bottle clears it, and the lowest two sit exactly on the line at 15%. That is an unusually complete formula and it is the honest reason to choose it.

Four of the benefits here are recognised for children specifically, which is the part worth paying attention to.

Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system in children. That wording was authorised for children in its own right, and at 200% of the reference intake this product carries it comfortably.

Vitamin D is needed for the normal growth and development of bone in children. Growing bone is the one thing a 4 to 12 year old is doing more than anything else, and vitamin D is the nutrient it depends on most.

Iron contributes to normal cognitive development of children. Recognised for children specifically, and the 5 mg here is 36% of the reference intake.

Iodine contributes to normal growth of children. Also recognised for children, at 27% here.

And the general benefits run right through the formula. Vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin A, zinc, copper, iron, folate and vitamin B12 each contribute to the normal function of the immune system. Thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, B12 and vitamin C each contribute to normal psychological function, and riboflavin, niacin, B6, B12, pantothenic acid, vitamin C, iron and folate each contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Vitamin A and zinc contribute to the maintenance of normal vision; vitamin D, zinc and copper to normal bones or connective tissue; vitamin E, vitamin C, zinc and copper to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. There are more than sixty recognised benefits available across these sixteen nutrients, which is why a complete formula is worth more than a long ingredient list.

How Much to Give, by Age

4 to 10 years: one 5 ml teaspoonful daily. At that rate the 150 ml bottle covers about 30 days.

11 to 12 years: two 5 ml teaspoonfuls daily, which is 10 ml. At that rate the bottle covers about 15 days, so an 11 or 12 year old gets through two bottles a month.

Shake it well first and give it straight from the spoon. Keep to the amount above rather than going over it, and the bottle has a childproof cap for exactly that reason.

From 4 years upwards. If your child is younger than 4, this is the wrong product for them and we would rather say so now than after you have bought it. An immune drop made for infants and under-fives is dosed from 3 months and carries recognised immune benefits for four nutrients, and our pharmacist will set you up with the right one for your child’s age.

It Contains Iron, Barley and Sulphites

Three things in this bottle deserve stating plainly, and all three come straight from the manufacturer’s own label.

It contains iron, 5 mg a spoonful. Vitabiotics warn that iron can be harmful to very young children if taken in excess, and that warning is the reason for the childproof cap. Keep it out of sight and reach, give the measured spoonful rather than a free pour, and if your child already takes another multivitamin, bring it in and let our pharmacist add the iron up before you start. A chewable children’s multivitamin we also stock carries 5 mg of iron too, and the two together would double it.

It contains barley, in the malt extract, which means it contains gluten. Please choose something else if your child avoids gluten, and ask us what we have instead.

It contains sulphur dioxide, in the glucose liquid. Sulphites are a declarable allergen and are worth knowing about particularly if your child has asthma. Have a word with our pharmacist first in that case.

The product is also made at a site that may handle nuts, which matters if your child has a nut allergy.

Keep Wellkid Multivitamin in the Fridge Once Opened

This is the practical instruction most likely to be missed in a Kenyan kitchen, and it comes from the label: refrigerate after opening and use within 6 weeks. Before opening, keep it below 25°C in a dry place.

The arithmetic works out neatly. At a spoonful a day a bottle runs for about 30 days, comfortably inside the 6 weeks, so a child aged 4 to 10 will always finish a bottle in time. An 11 or 12 year old on two spoonfuls finishes in 15 days. Buy one bottle at a time rather than stockpiling an opened one.

Is Wellkid Right for Your Child?

  • Please speak to our pharmacist first if your child has epilepsy, a thyroid condition, haemochromatosis, or any food allergy. Those are Vitabiotics’ own four, and haemochromatosis is on the list because of the iron. Our doctor is at the pharmacy if the question needs looking at properly.
  • If your child already takes a multivitamin or a zinc supplement, bring it to the counter. Iron and zinc both add up across children’s products, and a two-minute conversation saves you money as often as it saves you trouble. A zinc lozenge on top of this, for instance, is worth checking first.
  • From 4 years up. For a younger child please ask us for an age-appropriate drop instead, and keep this one out of sight and reach because of the iron.
  • Gluten, sulphites and nuts. Barley in the malt extract, sulphur dioxide in the glucose, and a site that may handle nuts. Ask us if any of those apply to your child.
  • Remember the fridge. Refrigerate after opening and finish it within 6 weeks. It is the one instruction on this bottle that people forget, and in our climate it is the one that matters most.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Wellkid Multivitamin Liquid do?

It helps your child’s immune system work normally and helps their bones grow properly. Four of its benefits are recognised for children specifically: vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system in children, vitamin D is needed for the normal growth and development of bone in children, iron contributes to normal cognitive development of children, and iodine contributes to normal growth of children.

How much should I give, and from what age?

From 4 years. One 5 ml teaspoonful daily for ages 4 to 10, and two teaspoonfuls (10 ml) daily for ages 11 and 12. Shake the bottle first. At one spoonful a day the 150 ml bottle lasts about 30 days; at two it lasts about 15.

My child is younger than 4. Can I give a smaller amount?

Please ask us instead of halving it. The label starts at 4 years and that is where we will keep it. An immune drop dosed from 3 months is the right format for a younger child and carries recognised immune benefits for four nutrients, and our pharmacist will match it to your child’s age.

What is in each spoonful?

Vitamin D 10 µg / 400 IU (200% of the daily reference intake), vitamin B12 2.5 µg (100%), thiamin 0.7 mg (64%), riboflavin 0.8 mg (57%), vitamin B6 0.8 mg (57%), niacin 8 mg (50%), folic acid 100 µg (50%), vitamin E 5 mg (42%), zinc 4 mg (40%), iron 5 mg (36%), pantothenic acid 2 mg (33%), iodine 40 µg (27%), vitamin A 200 µg RE (25%), vitamin C 12 mg (15%), copper 150 µg (15%), and 500 mg of malt extract. Every nutrient clears the 15% needed for its benefits to be stated.

Does it contain iron, and does that matter?

Yes, 5 mg a spoonful, and it matters enough that the bottle has a childproof cap. Vitabiotics warn that iron can be harmful to very young children if taken in excess. Give the measured spoonful, keep the bottle out of sight and reach, and if your child already takes another multivitamin let our pharmacist add the iron up first — the chewable children’s multivitamin we stock carries 5 mg too.

Is it gluten free?

No. The malt extract is made from barley, so it contains gluten. If your child avoids gluten please ask us what we carry instead.

Does it contain sulphites?

Yes, sulphur dioxide in the glucose liquid. Sulphites are a declarable allergen and are worth raising with our pharmacist if your child has asthma. The product is also made at a site that may handle nuts.

Does it need to go in the fridge?

Yes, once opened, and use it within 6 weeks. Before opening keep it below 25°C in a dry place. This is the instruction people most often miss and in our climate it is the one that matters most.

Is it high in sugar?

It is sweetened with cane sugar and glucose rather than artificial sweeteners, so a spoonful does contain a little sugar. On a 5 ml dose that is a very small amount next to anything else a child drinks in a day, but if you would rather avoid it altogether, ask us for a sugar-free alternative and we will show you what we have.

Can my child take it with other supplements?

Usually yes, and please let our pharmacist check first. Iron and zinc are the two that add up fastest across children’s products, so a zinc lozenge for children or another multivitamin on top of this is worth a two-minute conversation at the counter.

Is it suitable for vegetarians?

Yes. It is suitable for vegetarians and is not tested on animals, with no dairy, lactose, yeast, artificial colours, flavours or sweeteners, and no alcohol preservative.

Will it stop my child getting ill?

No supplement can promise that and we will not. What the nutrients in it are recognised for is helping the immune system work normally and helping bones and growth along, which is a different and more honest statement. If your child has a fever or has been unwell for several days, that is our doctor rather than another spoonful.
