Mini Drops Immune Plus

Mini Drops Immune Plus helps your child’s immune system work normally, in a single millilitre of sugar-free blackcurrant liquid that infants will take from 3 months. Vitamin C, zinc, folate and vitamin B12 are each recognised for contributing to normal immune function, and one dose supplies all four above the amount at which that may be said. If your baby is under 6 months, give the millilitre straight rather than in juice or water, and please talk to our pharmacist first if your child already takes anything else containing zinc.

Description

What Mini Drops Immune Plus Does

Mini Drops Immune Plus helps your child’s immune system work normally, in a single millilitre of sugar-free blackcurrant liquid measured out with a dropper. It carries four nutrients — vitamin C, zinc, folate and vitamin B12 — and every one of the four is recognised for contributing to the normal function of the immune system, which is an unusually solid footing for a children’s immune supplement. It is made for infants from 3 months and children up to 5 years.

This is Nature’s Aid’s Mini Drops range, in a 50 ml bottle with its own dropper, flavoured with blackcurrant and sweetened without sugar so that a small child will take it without a fight. One millilitre a day covers an infant, two covers a child of one to five, and the bottle carries 100 mg of elderberry fruit extract alongside the four nutrients. We give you the full amounts further down, because the amounts are the only honest way to compare one children’s immune supplement with another.

What Is in Each 1 ml Dose

These are the amounts, and they are the whole reason to choose this over something that only says “supports immunity” on the front.

Vitamin C, 20 mg — 25% of the daily reference intake.

Zinc, 2 mg, as zinc bisglycinate — 20% of the daily reference intake.

Folic acid, 50 µg — 25% of the daily reference intake.

Vitamin B12, 0.5 µg — 20% of the daily reference intake.

Elderberry fruit extract, 100 mg. This is the part with no recognised benefit attached to it, so we will describe it rather than claim for it: elderberry is the traditional cold remedy of northern Europe, it gives the drops their colour and much of their taste, and assessment of what it does is still unfinished. We would not ask you to buy the product for it.

Also in the bottle: purified water, glycerine, blackcurrant concentrate and potassium sorbate as a preservative. Sugar-free and suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Four Nutrients, One Recognised Benefit

A nutrient benefit may only be stated when a daily dose supplies at least 15% of the reference intake. Here is why that matters on this product: all four nutrients clear it, at the dose on the bottle. The lowest of them is 20%.

So the immune statement on this product rests on something real. European guidance recognises that vitamin C, zinc, folate and vitamin B12 each contribute to the normal function of the immune system, and this single millilitre delivers all four above the threshold where that may be said. Four separate nutrients converging on the same benefit is the strongest version of this a children’s supplement can have.

There is more besides, and it is worth knowing when you are deciding. Vitamin C also contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, bones and teeth, to the normal functioning of the nervous system, to normal psychological function, to the protection of cells from oxidative stress, to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and it increases iron absorption. Zinc contributes to normal cognitive function, to normal DNA synthesis, to the maintenance of normal bones, skin, hair, nails and vision, and to the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Folate contributes to normal blood formation, to normal amino acid synthesis, to normal homocysteine metabolism and to the process of cell division. Vitamin B12 contributes to normal red blood cell formation, to normal energy-yielding metabolism and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

If Your Baby Is Under 6 Months, Give the Millilitre Straight

This is the one thing we would change about the instructions, and it is the sort of detail a pharmacy should be useful for.

The directions say to add the 1 ml to juice or water. For a baby of 3, 4 or 5 months that is worth doing differently. The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months, which it defines as no other food or drink, not even water, with the exception of rehydration solution and drops and syrups of vitamins, minerals and medicines.

Read that exception carefully, because it is good news. A vitamin and mineral drop is expressly allowed. It is the glass of juice or water carrying it that is not. So for a baby under 6 months, put the millilitre straight onto a spoon or into the mouth, and keep the juice and water for later. From 6 months onwards, mixing it into a drink is perfectly sensible and usually easier.

How Much to Give, and the Zinc Question

3 months to 1 year: 1 ml once a day. That is 20 mg of vitamin C, 2 mg of zinc, 50 µg of folic acid and 0.5 µg of B12.

1 to 5 years: 1 ml twice a day, which doubles all four. Both amounts sit comfortably below the intakes European assessment treats as the upper end for small children, which is why we are happy to publish the arithmetic.

At 1 ml a day the 50 ml bottle covers 50 days; at 2 ml a day it covers 25. Once opened, use it within 4 months. Shake it before use, and rinse the dropper in cooled boiled water afterwards.

And now the zinc. Zinc is the nutrient where children’s supplements most often overlap, and small children have less room than you would think. If your child already takes a children’s zinc lozenge or a chewable children’s multivitamin, please let our pharmacist add up the zinc across all of them before you start. That page on the lozenges explains carefully why one a day is the limit, and the two together can reach more than a toddler should have. It is a two-minute conversation and it is the main reason to buy a children’s supplement from a pharmacy rather than a shelf.

It is also not intended for adults. If it is your own immune system you are thinking about, an effervescent with vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc is the adult version of this idea and carries the same recognised immune benefits at adult amounts.

Is Mini Drops Immune Plus Right for Your Child?

  • If your baby is under 6 months. Give the millilitre straight rather than in juice or water, for the reason above, and have a word with our pharmacist or our doctor first — at that age anything you give deserves a conversation, and we would rather have it with you.
  • If your child takes anything else with zinc in it. Bring the other bottle or tell us the name. Zinc adds up across products and small children have the least headroom.
  • If your child has had a reaction to blackcurrant or elderberry. Both are in the bottle, and elderberry is the one with no assessment behind it. Ask us first.
  • Follow the dose for infants exactly. One millilitre is one millilitre, and Nature’s Aid are explicit that the recommended intake should not be exceeded. The dropper is there to make that easy.
  • If what you are really after is bone development. That benefit belongs to vitamin D, which this product does not contain, and it is the one children’s nutrient most worth getting right. Ask our pharmacist which vitamin D suits your child’s age and we will sort it out with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Mini Drops Immune Plus actually do?

It helps your child’s immune system work normally. European guidance recognises that vitamin C, zinc, folate and vitamin B12 each contribute to the normal function of the immune system, and a single 1 ml dose supplies all four above the amount at which that may be stated. Four nutrients on the same benefit is the strongest footing a children’s immune supplement can have.

What is in each millilitre?

Vitamin C 20 mg (25% of the daily reference intake), zinc 2 mg as bisglycinate (20%), folic acid 50 µg (25%) and vitamin B12 0.5 µg (20%), plus 100 mg of elderberry fruit extract. The lowest of the four is 20%, which is why the immune benefit may be stated at all.

From what age can I give it?

From 3 months. One millilitre once a day from 3 months to a year, and 1 ml twice a day from 1 to 5 years. It is not intended for adults.

My baby is exclusively breastfed. Can I still give this?

Yes, and read this answer rather than guessing. The World Health Organization defines exclusive breastfeeding as no other food or drink, not even water, for the first 6 months, with the exception of rehydration solution and drops and syrups of vitamins, minerals and medicines. A vitamin and mineral drop is expressly allowed. What is not allowed is the juice or water the label suggests mixing it into, so give the millilitre straight onto a spoon until 6 months. After that, mixing it into a drink is fine.

Can I give it with another children’s supplement?

Please check with our pharmacist first, and the nutrient to check is zinc. Small children have much less headroom on zinc than most parents expect, and a zinc lozenge made for children on top of this can take a toddler past the sensible daily amount on its own. Tell us everything your child already takes and we will add it up in two minutes.

Does the elderberry do anything?

We will be straight with you: there is no recognised benefit for elderberry, because assessment of the botanicals was never completed. It is a traditional northern European cold remedy and it gives the drops their colour and flavour. The four nutrients are the reason to buy this; the elderberry is not.

Is it sugar-free, and is it suitable for vegans?

Yes to both, and the sweetness comes from glycerine and blackcurrant concentrate rather than added sugar. It is preserved with potassium sorbate.

How long does a bottle last, and how do I store it?

At 1 ml a day, 50 days; at 2 ml a day, 25 days. Keep it below 25°C out of direct sun, close it tightly, and use it within 4 months of opening. Shake before use and rinse the dropper in cooled boiled water each time.

Will it stop my child catching colds?

No supplement can promise that and we are not going to. What the nutrients in it are recognised for is helping the immune system work normally, which is a different and more honest statement. If your child has a fever, is not feeding, or has been unwell for several days, that is our doctor rather than more drops.

What about vitamin D?

Not in this one, and worth raising, because vitamin D is the nutrient with the clearest recognised benefit for children: it contributes to the normal growth and development of bone in children. A chewable children’s multivitamin for ages 2 and over carries vitamin D alongside the immune nutrients — please read its iron note before you buy. For a baby, ask our pharmacist which vitamin D drop is right for the age.

Is there an adult version?

Yes, and it is the right question, because parents often buy this and then take it themselves. An effervescent with vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc carries the same recognised immune benefits at adult amounts. These drops are formulated for infants and children and are not intended for adults.
