TENA Pants Maxi Large: the Heaviest Pant in the Range

TENA Pants Maxi help someone with the heaviest leakage get through a full night in one garment, holding 2,550 ml and sitting at eight out of eight on the protection scale used across the TENA range. They suit heavy leakage, long nights, and anyone who goes several hours between changes. They pull on like ordinary underwear, they suit men and women alike, and this is the Large, ten to a pack.

There are four grades of TENA pull-on pant, and each one holds a measurably different amount: Normal 1,010 g, Plus 1,440 ml, Super 2,010 ml and Maxi 2,550 ml. This is the Maxi, the top of that ladder, and it holds two and a half times what the entry pant holds. That is the whole reason it costs more, and it is worth knowing which grade you are buying before you compare prices between one shop and another.

Where the Maxi Sits Against the Rest of the Range

If you have tried a cheaper pant and it let you down overnight, the answer is usually a grade up rather than a change of brand. Each step up that ladder is a real increase in capacity.

Equally, where a Normal or a Plus is keeping you dry, there is little to gain from buying the Maxi and we will tell you so. Tell our pharmacist how often you are changing and whether the leaks happen by day, by night or both, and we will put you on the right grade. Buying the heaviest pant where a lighter one would do is the commonest way people overspend in this category.

Getting the Size Right

Large covers a waist or hip measurement of 100 to 135 cm. Take a tape measure round the widest part of the hips and round the waist, over light clothing, and send our pharmacist both figures before you order.

Size matters more in a pant than in any other continence product, because the pant itself has to hold the absorbent core against the body. Too large and the leg openings gape, which is where it will leak whatever its capacity. Too small and it rolls down at the waist and grows uncomfortable within the hour. The range also runs XS 50 to 70 cm, S 65 to 85 cm, M 80 to 110 cm and XL 120 to 160 cm, so if your measurement falls outside 100 to 135 cm, tell us and we will order the size that fits.

Why the Maxi Suits the Night

The point of a 2,550 ml pant is that it can be left on for a long stretch. That makes it the right choice for a full night’s sleep without getting up to change, and for someone whose carer comes round every few hours rather than continuously.

It will also feel bulkier than a lighter pant, because the capacity has to go somewhere. That is a fair trade for an uninterrupted night, and it is also why we would steer you to a Plus for daytime wear where a Plus carries you between changes. A good many people use a lighter grade by day and a Maxi at night, which is both more comfortable and cheaper.

Wearing and Changing TENA Pants Maxi

They are worn in place of underwear rather than over it, because a pant pulled on over briefs sits away from the body and leaks at the leg. Pull them up like ordinary pants and smooth out any folds at the leg, since a fold becomes a channel.

When a wet one comes off, the side seams tear open, so it comes away at the hip rather than down over the legs. That is what makes a pant practical for someone unsteady on their feet, and it lets a carer change one with the person standing or sitting. They are single use, so into the bin rather than the wash, and please keep every part of one out of the toilet. Change three to five times a day, and always before the pant reaches capacity.

The Skin Is the Part That Matters

At this level of absorbency the temptation is to leave the pant on longer than you should, and skin kept damp against an absorbent core is skin that turns sore. A pant holding 2,550 ml still needs changing on the same schedule as a lighter one.

At each change, wash gently with warm water or a mild cleanser, pat the skin dry rather than rubbing, and apply a thin layer of barrier cream to any redness. Thin is the word: a heavy layer sits between the skin and the pant and slows absorption. Ask our pharmacist for the right cream with your first order. If redness persists, or there is broken skin, itching, a rash in the groin folds or any discharge, please come and see us, because a fungal rash and a urine rash look similar and are treated quite differently.

Please Let Our Doctor Look at the Cause

Needing the heaviest pant in the range is worth investigating as well as managing. In women the commonest causes are pelvic floor weakness after childbirth and changes after menopause, and supervised pelvic floor training helps a great many people. In men the prostate is the usual cause, and a good many prostate problems respond to tablets.

Please see our doctor if the leaking is new or getting worse, if you leak without warning and before feeling the urge, if the bladder feels full after passing urine, or if you are also getting up repeatedly at night. Blood in the urine, pain or burning, fever, or a sudden inability to pass urine at all need seeing the same day. Where the person wearing these is bed-bound or changed lying down, an all-in-one brief is usually easier for the carer, so ask about TENA ProSkin Slip Plus instead.

What We Can Honestly Tell You

Ten pants at this grade is two to three days at a full change schedule, or about ten nights where these are for the night only. Tell our pharmacist how you plan to use them and we will set up a standing monthly delivery in plain outer packaging, which is how most people in this category prefer to buy.

Where the leaks are lighter, ask about TENA Pants Normal at 1,010 g, which costs considerably less per pant. And where the bed is the real problem, a bed pad under the sheet alongside a pant works out cheaper than going up a grade.

Is This Incontinence Pant Right for You?

Please talk to our pharmacist or our doctor before you buy if any of these apply.

  • You have not measured. Large covers 100 to 135 cm at the waist or hip. Outside that range, we will order the size that fits.
  • A lighter grade is keeping you dry. Then this is more pant than you need, and we will say so.
  • Leaking at the leg opening. Usually a size too large rather than too little absorbency. Let us check the measurement first.
  • Tempted to leave it on longer because it holds more. Three to five changes a day, always before capacity, whatever the grade.
  • Redness that does not settle, broken skin, or a rash in the groin folds. Please come and see us rather than carrying on.
  • New or worsening leaking, leaking without warning, or blood in the urine, pain, fever or sudden inability to pass urine. Our doctor, and the same day for that second group.

TENA Pants Maxi Large: Your Questions Answered

How much does TENA Pants Maxi hold?

2,550 ml, which is eight out of eight on the maker’s protection scale. It is the most absorbent pull-on pant in the range.

Is this the same as TENA Pants Normal?

No, and the difference is large. Normal holds 1,010 g, Plus 1,440 ml, Super 2,010 ml and Maxi 2,550 ml. This is the Maxi.

What size is Large?

A waist or hip measurement of 100 to 135 cm. Send our pharmacist both figures before you order.

What if my measurement is outside that?

Tell us. The range runs XS 50 to 70 cm, S 65 to 85, M 80 to 110 and XL 120 to 160, and we would rather order the right size than sell you this one.

How many are in the pack?

Ten. That is two to three days at a full change schedule, or about ten nights if you only wear them at night.

Can I leave it on longer because it holds more?

Please do not. Three to five changes a day, and always before it reaches capacity. Skin kept damp turns sore whatever the pant can hold.

Do I wear them over my underwear?

In place of it. A pant worn over briefs sits away from the body and leaks at the leg.

How does a carer get a wet one off?

The side seams tear open, so it never has to be pulled down over the legs. The person can be standing or sitting.

Can they be washed and reused?

They are single use. Into the bin rather than the wash, and no part of one should be flushed.

What should we do about sore skin?

Wash gently, pat dry rather than rubbing, and a thin layer of barrier cream on any redness. A thick layer stops the pant absorbing.

When should we see the doctor?

New or worsening leaking, leaking without warning, or a bladder that never feels empty. Blood, pain, fever or sudden inability to pass urine need the same day.

The person is bed-bound. Is a pant still right?

Usually an all-in-one brief is easier to change lying down. Ask our pharmacist about TENA ProSkin Slip Plus.

Can you deliver every month?

Yes, in plain outer packaging. Tell us the grade, the size and how you use them.
