TENA Lady Normal: Incontinence Pads for Women Who Have Outgrown a Liner

Incontinence pads for women help you stop planning your day around the nearest toilet, and TENA Lady Normal holds 325 ml on the standard laboratory test, which puts it at 4 on the eight-point absorbency scale used across the range. It is a shaped pad with soft side cuffs, a fast core that gels the liquid, odour control and a breathable top layer, and it sticks straight into ordinary underwear.

Twelve to a pack, and published for medium bladder weakness rather than light leaks, which is a distinction worth getting right before you spend anything. Please tell our pharmacist how often you are currently changing and whether the pad is wet or merely damp when you take it off, because those two answers between them tell us whether this is the right step in the range or whether you want the size above or below it.

Choosing Between Incontinence Pads for Women: Where Normal Sits

Almost nobody lands on the right absorbency first time, so here is the whole ladder with the published capacities, all measured the same way so they compare directly.

  • Mini Magic 60 ml and Ultra Mini 92 ml — liners, for the occasional drop.
  • Mini 170 ml and Mini Plus 240 ml — light leaks.
  • Normal 325 ml — medium, and this product.
  • Extra 475 ml — medium, the next step up.
  • Extra Plus around 540 ml — medium to heavy.
  • Maxi 798 ml, and Maxi Night for lying down — heavy.

Go up a step if you leak through, or find yourself changing more than five times a day. Go down a step if the pad is largely dry when you change it, because a smaller pad costs less, sits thinner and feels better under clothes. Two minutes with our pharmacist saves buying your way up the range a pack at a time.

Wearing It So It Stays Where You Put It

Wide adhesive strips on the back hold the pad inside ordinary underwear, so no special pants are needed. Press it down along its whole length rather than just the middle, and set the wider end where you need the protection, which for most women is towards the front.

Close-fitting cotton underwear holds a pad far better than loose or silky underwear, and that is the usual reason a pad shifts and then leaks at the edge rather than through the middle. If yours has been moving, tell us before you move up a size, because the underwear is more often the culprit than the pad.

Why a Period Pad Struggles Where This One Works

Women substitute period pads constantly, usually out of embarrassment at the till, and it is worth knowing why the substitution fails. A period pad has an open surface built for a slow, thick flow. Urine arrives fast and thin, so it travels along the surface and escapes at the edge before an open pad has taken it in.

A continence pad works the other way round. The surface pulls liquid down quickly and a superabsorbent core turns it to gel so it stays put, which also prevents the ammonia smell that develops when urine sits on a surface. That is why a pad like this stays dry for hours where a period pad gives up, and why the smell problem disappears with it.

Changing It, and Keeping the Skin Well

Three to five changes across a day suits most women. The rule that matters more than the number is to change the pad before it reaches its capacity rather than once it has, because prolonged dampness against skin brings on a sore, itchy rash that is much harder to settle than to avoid.

At each change, wash gently with warm water or a mild cleanser, pat the skin dry rather than rubbing, and put on a thin layer of barrier cream if there is any redness. Ask our pharmacist for the cream with your order. If soreness persists, or there is itching, burning or a discharge, please come and see us rather than carrying on, because thrush and urine rash look very alike and are treated quite differently.

Leaking Is a Symptom, and Much of It Is Treatable

This is what we would want a woman in our own family to hear. Bladder leakage is common, it is rarely just age, and a large share of it improves with treatment rather than being managed with pads for the next thirty years.

Leaking when you cough, laugh, sneeze or lift is usually stress incontinence, and supervised pelvic floor training helps a great many women, often substantially. A sudden desperate urge with little warning is a different pattern with its own treatments. Our doctor can tell them apart in a single appointment and say what is worth trying. Please come in if the leaking is new, has got worse, began after childbirth or surgery, or comes with pain, burning, blood or a change in how often you pass urine.

What We Can Honestly Tell You

At 325 ml this is the sensible starting point for a woman whose leaks have outgrown a liner but are not yet heavy, and twelve to a pack is enough to keep some at home and some in a handbag. The range was recently renamed, so you may see the same pad sold as TENA Discreet Normal; it is the same product.

If 325 ml turns out to be too little, the next step is TENA Lady Extra at 475 ml. If you are drier than expected, drop to the Ultra Mini liner at 92 ml. And if pads are no longer enough on their own, ask about TENA Lady pants, which take the place of underwear.

Is This Pad Right for You?

Please talk to our pharmacist or our doctor before you buy if any of these apply.

  • Only an occasional drop when you cough or sneeze. A liner will do and costs less. Ask us.
  • Leaking through, or changing more than five times a day. Move up a step and we will show you the figures.
  • The pad is dry when you change it. Move down a step and save money.
  • The pad keeps shifting. Usually the underwear. Let us check before you buy a bigger size.
  • Red, itchy or sore skin, or any discharge. Come and see us, because thrush and urine rash look alike and are treated differently.
  • Leaking that is new, worse, began after childbirth or surgery, or comes with pain, burning or blood. Please see our doctor first.

Everything in this category travels in plain outer packaging with nothing on the outside to say what is inside, and the delivery note carries our name and no product description. At three to five a day a pack covers a known length of time, so tell us how many months you want covered and we will work out the quantity with you before you order.

Across Africa, ask us before you order. We have sent orders to Uganda, Tanzania, Somaliland and as far as Malawi, and we will quote for Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and the rest of the continent. Tell us the destination and we will confirm any import paperwork before the parcel leaves us.

Living abroad? Order from wherever you are and we deliver to your family here in Kenya. Kenyans in the UK, the United States, Canada, South Africa and the Gulf order from us regularly for parents and relatives at home. A continence pad is needed every day rather than occasionally, so running out is the thing to plan against. Tell us who it is for, the size and how many months you want covered, and we will set up a standing monthly delivery so nobody is ever caught short.

TENA Lady Normal: Your Questions Answered

How much do these incontinence pads for women hold?

325 ml on the standard laboratory test, which puts them at 4 on the eight-point absorbency scale used across the range.

Are they for light leaks?

They are published for medium bladder weakness rather than light. For the occasional drop, a liner will do and costs less.

How many are in a pack?

Twelve, which is enough to keep some at home and some in a handbag.

How do I know whether to go up a size?

If you leak through, or change more than five times a day. The next step up is TENA Lady Extra at 475 ml.

And how do I know whether to go down?

If the pad is largely dry when you change it. A smaller pad costs less, sits thinner and feels better under clothes.

How does the pad stay in place?

Wide adhesive strips on the back stick it inside ordinary underwear. Press along the whole length, not just the middle.

Mine keeps moving. Why?

Usually the underwear. Close-fitting cotton holds a pad far better than loose or silky underwear. Tell us before you move up a size.

Can I use period pads instead?

They work far less well. A period pad has an open surface for a slow thick flow, while urine arrives fast and thin and escapes at the edge. A continence pad pulls liquid down and gels it.

Will there be a smell?

There is an odour control layer, and because the core gels the urine it stays off the surface instead of developing the ammonia smell a period pad does.

How often should I change one?

Three to five times a day, and always before the pad reaches its capacity rather than once it has.

My skin has gone sore. What should I do?

Wash gently, pat dry rather than rubbing, and use a thin layer of barrier cream. If it stays sore, or there is itching, burning or discharge, come and see us.

Is leaking just part of getting older?

Rarely. A large share improves with treatment. Leaking when you cough or lift often responds well to supervised pelvic floor training, and our doctor can say what is worth trying.

Why is it sometimes called TENA Discreet Normal?

The range was renamed. It is the same pad under a new name, and we stock it either way.
