This Recare pregnancy test cassette helps you settle whether you are expecting with the tidiest of the home formats: a dropper, three drops into a well, and a sealed window to read. You handle the sample once and the rest is enclosed, which makes it the easiest format to read with confidence. Use first morning urine and read within 5 minutes. Recare Pregnancy Test Cassette: a Few Drops, a Clean Result Window

This Recare pregnancy test cassette helps you settle whether you are expecting with the tidiest of the home formats: a dropper, three drops into a well, and a sealed plastic window to read. There is no strip to hold and nothing to dip.

The cassette is the format most people find easiest to look at, because the result sits in a moulded housing with the control and test positions clearly marked rather than along a bare paper strip. You handle the sample once, with the dropper, and the rest is sealed. It detects the same hormone as every other home test, human chorionic gonadotropin, and reads in the same few minutes.

How to Use a Recare Pregnancy Test Cassette

Collect urine in the clean, dry container provided or any clean container, using your first sample of the morning where you can, because that is when the hormone is most concentrated.

Take the cassette out of its foil and lay it flat on a dry surface. Draw urine into the dropper, hold it upright, and release the number of drops the leaflet specifies, usually 3, into the round sample well. Hold the dropper vertically so the drops are a consistent size, and let each one soak in before the next.

Then set a timer and read within the stated window, usually 5 minutes. One line in the control position means not pregnant. Two lines means pregnant, and a faint second line counts. A blank control position means the cassette has failed and needs replacing. Anything that appears after the window has passed should be ignored.

If the Result Is Positive, Do These Three Things

First, start folic acid today. Every woman who could be pregnant needs 400 µg a day, and the reason it is urgent rather than routine is timing: the baby’s neural tube forms and closes within the first few weeks, frequently before a woman is sure of her dates. Starting at a first antenatal appointment is too late for that particular job. A prenatal such as Pregnacare Max covers it, or plain folic acid on its own, and our pharmacist will sort it out in a minute.

Second, ring us and ask for our doctor. A positive home test is reliable, and what our doctor adds is dating, an examination, your antenatal booking, and the blood tests that belong early rather than late. Work out the first day of your last period before you call, because every date in the pregnancy is counted from it.

Third, stop anything that belongs to the trying-to-conceive stage. Fertility supplements often contain vitamin A and herbs that suit the months before a positive test rather than the months after, so bring what you are taking to the counter and let our pharmacist go through it with you.

A Positive Test With Pain Is Different, and It Is Urgent

Come in the same day, or go to the nearest hospital, if a positive test comes with pain on one side of the lower abdomen, bleeding that differs from your normal period, pain at the tip of a shoulder, faintness, dizziness or pressure in the back passage.

Those can be signs of an ectopic pregnancy, where the pregnancy has implanted outside the womb, usually in a fallopian tube. It occurs in roughly 1 to 2 in every 100 pregnancies, a home test reads positive exactly as it would otherwise, and it is a medical emergency that is entirely treatable when it is caught early. Sudden sharp pain, shoulder-tip pain or feeling faint needs a hospital straight away rather than a phone call.

Most positive tests are perfectly ordinary pregnancies and most women reading this will have one. The reason it is written down is that a test kit is where many women find out, and a positive result with one-sided pain is the one combination worth acting on within hours.

Cassette, Strip or Midstream?

All three look for the same hormone with the same chemistry, so the choice is about handling rather than accuracy. A dip strip is the best value and what clinics use, and it needs a container and a steady hand. The cassette costs a little more and gives you a dropper, less contact with the sample and an easier window to read. A midstream test is used directly in the stream and needs no container at all, which is what makes it the one for testing away from home.

For a first test at home, where you want to be certain you have read it properly, the cassette is a sensible middle choice.

Is a Pregnancy Test Cassette Right for You?

The cassette suits most people and most situations. Please speak to our pharmacist or our doctor before relying on a result if any of these apply:

  • You are testing before the day your period is due. A negative that early means too early. Test again on the due date and once more 3 days later.
  • You are having fertility treatment. An hCG trigger injection makes every urine test read positive for up to 2 weeks. Follow your clinic’s testing date rather than your own.
  • A pregnancy ended within the last 2 months, by miscarriage, termination or birth. Hormone can remain for up to 60 days and produce a positive that belongs to the previous pregnancy.
  • The test is positive and you have one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, unusual bleeding or faintness. Same day, as above.
  • You are on medication for epilepsy or diabetes, or you have a long-term condition. A positive test changes some prescriptions straight away, so ring our doctor rather than waiting for a booking appointment.

Our pharmacists will walk you through the dropper and the timing, and our doctor is here for whichever answer the window gives you.

FAQs

How many drops of urine does the cassette need?

Usually 3, into the round sample well, and the leaflet in your pack gives the exact number. Hold the dropper upright so the drops are a consistent size, and let each one soak in before the next. Too few gives a weak result and too many floods the well.

When should I take the test?

The day your period is due at the earliest, and the day after is more reliable. Use your first urine of the morning, which has been in the bladder overnight and carries the most hormone per millilitre. Testing in the afternoon after drinking dilutes the sample, and that is one of the two commonest causes of a false negative.

What does a faint second line mean?

It counts as positive. Early pregnancy produces small amounts of hormone, so a genuine positive is often barely visible. Colour is irrelevant and presence is what matters. Retest in 2 to 3 days and the line should be clearly darker, because the hormone roughly doubles every 1 to 2 days.

There is no line at all in the control position. What now?

The cassette has failed and the result means nothing. That is about the test rather than about you, and it needs a fresh one. Check the expiry on the foil and that the pack has been stored somewhere cool and dry, since heat and damp are the usual reasons.

My result is positive. What should I do first?

Start folic acid the same day. Every woman who could be pregnant needs 400 µg daily, and the baby’s neural tube forms and closes within the first few weeks, often before the dates are settled. Then ring us and ask for our doctor, who will confirm the result, work out your dates and start your antenatal booking. Work out the first day of your last period before you call, because every date is counted from it.

When is a positive test an emergency?

If it comes with pain on one side of the lower abdomen, bleeding unlike your normal period, pain at the tip of a shoulder, faintness, dizziness or pressure in the back passage, come in the same day or go to the nearest hospital. Those can be signs of an ectopic pregnancy, where the pregnancy has implanted outside the womb. It happens in roughly 1 to 2 in every 100 pregnancies, a home test reads positive just the same, and it is very treatable when caught early. Sudden sharp pain or feeling faint needs a hospital rather than a phone call.

Should I stop my fertility supplement now that the test is positive?

Please bring it to the counter. Supplements made for the trying-to-conceive stage often contain vitamin A and herbs such as vitex and red clover, which belong before pregnancy rather than during it. A prenatal takes over from the day of the positive test, and our pharmacist will make the swap for you.

Is the cassette more accurate than a strip?

No, and that is worth knowing before you pay more. The chemistry, the hormone and the sensitivity are the same. What you are buying is handling: a dropper instead of a dip, less contact with the sample, and a moulded window that is easier to read with confidence. Our pharmacist will tell you which format suits where you plan to test.

Can I test at any time of day?

You can, and first thing in the morning gives the strongest result. If you have to test later, hold your urine for 4 hours beforehand and drink little in that time, which brings the concentration back up.

Can a test read positive when I am not pregnant?

It is uncommon, and there are a few causes worth knowing. Fertility treatment with an hCG injection reads positive for up to 2 weeks. A pregnancy that ended in the last 2 months can leave hormone behind for up to 60 days. A very early loss produces a genuine positive followed by a period. Some ovarian conditions raise the hormone as well. Our doctor can work out which applies.

How long will the result stay readable?

Read it inside the window the leaflet gives, usually 5 minutes, and then treat the cassette as finished. Lines that develop later carry no meaning and are the commonest reason somebody believes a negative test was positive. Photograph the window inside the time if you want to keep it or show it to our pharmacist.

How should I store it before use?

Sealed in its foil, somewhere cool and dry, and check the expiry date before you open it. A bathroom shelf and a car are both poor places. Open the foil only when you are ready to test.
