HCG Pregnancy Test Strip: an Answer in 5 Minutes, From the Day Your Period Is Late
This HCG pregnancy test strip helps you settle the question of whether you are pregnant without leaving the house, from the first day of a missed period. One strip, a clean container of urine, and a result you can read in about 5 minutes.
It works by detecting human chorionic gonadotropin, the hormone a developing placenta begins producing once a fertilised egg has implanted, which is usually 6 to 10 days after conception. The strip is the simplest and cheapest format there is: a plain paper strip you dip, with no cassette, no dropper and nothing to assemble. Everything happens in the window along the top.
When to Take an HCG Pregnancy Test Strip
The day your period is due is the earliest sensible point, and the day after is better. Testing earlier is the single commonest reason a pregnant woman gets a negative result, because hCG roughly doubles every 1 to 2 days in early pregnancy and there is a window where the hormone is present but still too low for a strip to see.
Use your first urine of the morning. It has been sitting in the bladder overnight and is the most concentrated of the day, which matters enormously when hCG levels are low. Testing in the afternoon after a litre of water is the second commonest reason for a false negative, because the sample is diluted. If you have to test later in the day, hold your urine for 4 hours beforehand and drink little in that time.
Cycles vary, ovulation moves, and plenty of women are a few days out on when their period was actually due. If the strip reads negative and your period still has not arrived, test again in 3 days with a fresh strip and first morning urine. Two negatives 3 days apart with no period is the point to ring our pharmacist.
How to Use the Strip
Collect urine in a clean, dry container. Take the strip out of its foil pouch and use it straight away, since the strip begins reacting to moisture in the air. Hold it by the coloured end and dip the other end into the urine up to the marked line, with the arrows pointing down. Leave it there for the number of seconds the leaflet gives, which is usually around 10, then lay it flat on a dry surface.
Set a timer and read it at 5 minutes. Reading early gives you a result that may still be developing. Reading late is worse, and the reason is in the next section.
Reading the Result, Including the Faint Line
Two lines means pregnant. One line, in the control area, means not pregnant. No line at all in the control area means the strip has failed and tells you nothing, so use a fresh one.
A faint second line still counts as a positive. Early pregnancy produces small amounts of hormone, so a genuine positive at 10 or 11 days past ovulation is often barely there. Colour is irrelevant; presence is what matters. If you see a faint line, treat it as a positive, and test again in 2 to 3 days, when it should be clearly darker as the hormone doubles.
The exception is the line that appears after the reading time, and it catches a great many people. As a strip dries, the place where the test line would have been can show a faint colourless or grey mark. That is an evaporation line, and it carries no meaning at all. The way to tell them apart is the clock and the colour: a real line appears within the reading window and has colour in it. Anything that shows up an hour later belongs in the bin. This is the single biggest cause of confusion with strip tests, and it is why the timer matters more than it sounds.
What to Do With a Positive
Start taking folic acid the same day. Every woman who could become pregnant needs 400 µg a day, and the baby’s neural tube forms and closes in the first few weeks, often before a woman is even certain. A prenatal such as Pregnacare Max covers it, and our pharmacist can set this up for you in a minute. Nothing else here matters as much.
Then ring us and ask for our doctor, who will confirm the result, work out your dates, and get your antenatal booking started. Early booking is what catches the things worth catching.
And if you have been trying for a while, the companion to this strip is an ovulation test rather than another pregnancy test. The Recare LH ovulation cassette finds the surge that comes before ovulation and tells you which 2 days in the month matter.
Is This Strip Right for You?
The strip format is the cheapest and most accurate-per-shilling way to test, and it suits some situations better than others. Please ask our pharmacist or our doctor if any of these apply:
- You would rather not handle a container of urine. A midstream test is used directly in the stream and a cassette uses a dropper, and both are easier to manage if you are testing at work or away from home.
- You are having fertility treatment. An hCG trigger injection stays in your system for up to 2 weeks and will make any pregnancy test read positive. Your clinic will tell you when to test; please ask them rather than this strip.
- You have had a pregnancy end in the last 2 months, through miscarriage, termination or birth. hCG can remain for up to 60 days and give a positive that reflects the previous pregnancy. Ask our doctor to interpret it.
- Your period is late, the strip is negative, and you have one-sided pain or unusual bleeding. Please come in the same day rather than testing again.
- You are testing because you are worried rather than late, and you have found yourself buying strips repeatedly. Ring our pharmacist and let us help you work out what is actually going on with your cycle.
Our pharmacists will tell you when to test and how to read what you see, and our doctor is here for the result either way.

FAQs
When is the earliest I can use an HCG pregnancy test strip?
The day your period is due is the earliest sensible point, and the day after is better. hCG roughly doubles every 1 to 2 days in early pregnancy, so there is a window where the hormone is present but still too low for a strip to pick up. Testing too early is the commonest reason a pregnant woman gets a negative result.
Does it matter what time of day I test?
Yes, and it matters more than most people expect. Use your first urine of the morning, which has been in the bladder overnight and is the most concentrated of the day. Testing in the afternoon after plenty of water dilutes the sample and can give a false negative. If you must test later, hold your urine for 4 hours first and drink little in that time.
What does a faint second line mean?
A faint line still counts as a positive. Early pregnancy produces small amounts of hormone, so a genuine positive is often barely visible. Colour is irrelevant; presence is what matters. Test again in 2 to 3 days with first morning urine and it should be clearly darker as the hormone doubles.
I saw a line after an hour. Am I pregnant?
Almost certainly not. As the strip dries, the place where the test line would have been can show a faint colourless or grey mark, and that is an evaporation line with no meaning at all. The way to tell them apart is the clock and the colour: a real line appears inside the reading window and has colour in it. Anything appearing later belongs in the bin. Set a timer and read at 5 minutes.
The test is negative but my period has not come. What now?
Test again in 3 days with a fresh strip and first morning urine, since cycles vary and ovulation moves. Two negatives 3 days apart with no period is the point to ring our pharmacist, and our doctor can look at what else may be delaying it — thyroid problems, PCOS, stress and weight change are all common causes.
How accurate is the strip?
Used correctly and at the right time, strip tests are reliable and are the same technology a clinic uses for a urine test. The two things that undo them are testing too early and testing with dilute urine, and both are in your control. For the exact sensitivity figure printed in this pack’s leaflet, ask our pharmacist and we will read it off for you.
Can anything make a pregnancy test positive when I am not pregnant?
Yes, though it is uncommon. Fertility treatment with an hCG trigger injection will read positive for up to 2 weeks. A pregnancy that ended in the last 2 months can leave hormone behind for up to 60 days. A very early loss, sometimes called a chemical pregnancy, produces a genuine positive followed by a period. Some ovarian and other conditions raise hCG as well. Our doctor can sort out which applies.
Can I use the same strip twice?
No. Each strip is single use, and it starts reacting as soon as it leaves the foil. Use it straight out of the pouch and throw it away afterwards. Buying 2 or 3 at a time is sensible, because retesting in a few days is part of the normal process rather than a sign something went wrong.
Will medication affect the result?
Most will not. Antibiotics, painkillers, alcohol and hormonal contraception have no effect on hCG. The exceptions are medicines containing hCG itself, used in fertility treatment, and some treatments for infertility and certain cancers. If you take anything regularly, ask our pharmacist.
How long should I keep the strip?
Check the expiry date on the foil before you use it and store it somewhere cool and dry, away from a bathroom window or a hot car. An out-of-date or heat-damaged strip is a common cause of a failed or faint result, and at this price it is never worth using one you are unsure about.
What is the difference between this strip and the cassette or midstream test?
The chemistry is the same and so is the hormone being measured. What changes is handling. The strip is dipped into a container of urine. The cassette uses a dropper, so you handle the sample less. The midstream test is held directly in the stream and needs no container at all. Our pharmacist will tell you which suits where and when you plan to test.
My result is positive. What should I do first?
Start folic acid the same day. Every woman who could be pregnant needs 400 µg a day, and the baby’s neural tube forms in the first few weeks, often before she is certain. Then ring us for our doctor, who will confirm the result, work out your dates and start your antenatal booking.
Is this the same test a clinic uses?
A clinic urine test works on exactly the same principle and looks for the same hormone. Where a clinic goes further is a blood test, which measures the actual hormone level rather than simply whether it is present, and can confirm a pregnancy a few days earlier and track whether the level is rising properly. Our doctor can arrange one where the timing or the history calls for it.
