One Step HCG Pregnancy Test Strip: Sensitive to 25 mIU/mL, Readable in Minutes
This One Step HCG pregnancy test strip helps you find out whether you are expecting as early as 7 to 10 days after conception, which for most cycles is a few days before a period is even late. Dip it, lay it flat, and read the window.
Its sensitivity is 25 mIU/mL, and that figure is the whole reason to care about one strip over another. It is the lowest concentration of pregnancy hormone the strip can detect, measured in milli-international units per millilitre of urine. A lower number means an earlier answer. At 25 mIU/mL this sits at the standard set by most tests sold in pharmacies, and it is the number worth asking for whenever you buy a test anywhere.
What 25 mIU/mL Means in Days
After a fertilised egg implants, which happens around 6 to 10 days after conception, the developing placenta starts producing hCG and the amount roughly doubles every 1 to 2 days. By the day a period would have been due, levels are typically around 100 mIU/mL, comfortably above what this strip needs.
Working backwards, that is why 7 to 10 days after conception is the earliest realistic point and why the day of a missed period remains the reliable one. In the days between, a pregnant woman may genuinely be below 25 mIU/mL, so a negative result means too early rather than not pregnant. The hormone is on its way up; the strip simply reached the paper before the hormone did.
Getting a Clean Result From a One Step HCG Pregnancy Test Strip
Collect urine in a clean, dry container, and use the first sample of the morning if you possibly can, because concentration is what decides a borderline result.
Open the foil and use the strip immediately. Hold it by the coloured handle and lower the other end into the urine with the arrows pointing downwards, keeping the level below the marked line. Leave it in for the seconds the leaflet specifies, lift it out, and lay it flat on a dry surface. Then set a timer and read within the stated window, usually 5 minutes.
The three things that spoil a strip test are all avoidable: dipping past the line, which floods the pad; leaving the strip standing in the sample; and reading it long after the time is up. Hold it level, take it out, lay it down, and look once at the right moment.
When the Answer Is Negative and You Are Still Waiting
Retest in 3 days with a fresh strip and first morning urine. Ovulation moves between cycles, more than most people realise, and a period that feels late by 2 days is frequently a cycle that ran long. Repeating the test after the hormone has had 2 more doublings is the standard way through this, and it resolves most cases.
If a second test 3 days later is still negative and your period still has not arrived, ring our pharmacist. Our doctor can look at the reasons a cycle stalls — thyroid problems, polycystic ovary syndrome, significant weight change, stress and some medicines — and a blood test measures the hormone level itself rather than simply whether it has crossed 25 mIU/mL.
If you are trying to conceive rather than hoping you are not, the more useful test is the one taken earlier in the month. An ovulation test such as the Accufast LH midstream ovulation test finds the hormone surge that precedes ovulation and tells you which 2 days to focus on, which changes the odds in a way no pregnancy test can.
Strip, Cassette or Midstream?
The chemistry is identical across all three and so is the hormone being measured. What differs is handling, and that is worth a moment because it decides where and when you can realistically test.
A strip is dipped into a container, which means collecting a sample. A cassette test uses a dropper to place a few drops into a well, so you touch the sample less and the result sits in a clean plastic housing. A midstream test is held in the stream and needs no container at all, which is the one to choose if you are testing somewhere other than home.
For testing at home first thing in the morning, the strip is the most sensible money in the category, which is why it is what most clinics use.
Is a One Step HCG Pregnancy Test Strip Right for You?
The strip is accurate, inexpensive and suits most situations. Please speak to our pharmacist or our doctor first if any of these apply:
- You are testing before your period is due. A negative this early means too early. Test again on the day it was due and again 3 days later before drawing a conclusion.
- Your periods are irregular or absent, so you have no reliable due date to count from. Our doctor can work out where you are in the cycle, which makes any test result mean something.
- You are on fertility treatment. An hCG trigger injection reads positive on any urine test for up to 2 weeks. Your clinic sets the testing date; please follow theirs.
- You are breastfeeding or recently gave birth, or had a pregnancy end within the last 2 months. Hormone from the previous pregnancy may still be present for up to 60 days.
- A result is positive and you have pain on one side, shoulder-tip pain, or bleeding that differs from a period. Come in the same day.
Our pharmacists will tell you when to test and what you are looking at, and our doctor is here the moment the answer needs following up.

FAQs
What does 25 mIU/mL mean on a pregnancy test?
It is the sensitivity: the lowest concentration of pregnancy hormone the strip can detect, in milli-international units per millilitre of urine. A lower number means an earlier answer. 25 mIU/mL is the standard for pharmacy tests, and it is the figure worth asking for whenever you buy a test anywhere.
How early can I use a One Step HCG pregnancy test strip?
As early as 7 to 10 days after conception, which for most cycles is a few days before a period is late. The reliable day remains the day the period was due. hCG roughly doubles every 1 to 2 days and reaches about 100 mIU/mL by the missed period, comfortably above what this strip needs.
I tested early and it was negative. Am I not pregnant?
It means too early rather than not pregnant. A pregnant woman testing 3 or 4 days before her period is due may genuinely be below 25 mIU/mL. Test again on the day the period was due, and again 3 days after that if it still has not come.
Why does first morning urine matter so much?
Because concentration decides a borderline result. Urine held overnight carries far more hormone per millilitre than urine passed in the afternoon after drinking. When levels are near the 25 mIU/mL threshold, that difference is the difference between one line and two.
How long do I dip the strip, and how deep?
Dip to the marked line only, with the arrows pointing down, for the seconds the leaflet gives, usually around 10. Dipping past the line floods the pad and ruins it. Lift it out, lay it flat on a dry surface, and read within the stated window.
Can I leave the strip standing in the urine?
Please take it out. Leaving it in the sample keeps drawing fluid up the strip and is a common cause of a smudged or unreadable result. Dip, lift, lay flat, read once at the right time.
The test is negative and my period still has not come. What next?
Retest in 3 days with a fresh strip and first morning urine, which resolves most cases, because ovulation moves between cycles and a period that feels 2 days late is often a cycle that ran long. If a second test 3 days later is still negative, ring our pharmacist and our doctor can look at the reasons a cycle stalls.
What is the difference between a urine test and a blood test?
A urine test answers whether the hormone has crossed a threshold. A blood test measures the actual level, which means it can confirm a pregnancy a few days earlier and can be repeated to check the level is rising as it should. Our doctor can arrange one where the dates or the history call for it.
Which should I choose, a strip, a cassette or a midstream test?
The chemistry and the hormone are identical. The strip is dipped into a collected sample and is the best value. The cassette uses a dropper, so you handle the sample less. The midstream test is held in the stream and needs no container, which is the one for testing away from home. Our pharmacist will match it to where and when you plan to test.
Does anything I take affect the result?
Antibiotics, painkillers, alcohol and hormonal contraception have no effect on hCG. Medicines containing hCG itself, used in fertility treatment, will read positive for up to 2 weeks. If you take anything regularly, ask our pharmacist to check it.
How should I store the strips?
Somewhere cool and dry, inside the sealed foil, and check the expiry date before use. A bathroom shelf and a car glovebox are both poor choices, since heat and damp degrade the pad. Open the foil only when you are ready to test, because the strip starts reacting to moisture in the air.
Can I use one strip to test twice?
No, each is single use. Buying 2 or 3 at a time makes sense, since retesting a few days later is part of the normal process rather than a sign anything went wrong.
I am trying to conceive. Is there a better test to be buying?
An ovulation test, taken earlier in the month. It finds the hormone surge before ovulation and identifies the 2 days that matter most, which changes the odds in a way a pregnancy test cannot. Ask our pharmacist to show you how one works.
