What These Digestive Enzymes Do
Plant Enzymes is a capsule of eight digestive enzymes taken for the heaviness, bloating and wind that settle in after a meal, and it is the broadest of the three blends we stock. Protease 12,500 HUT and an acid-stable protease at 2,500 HUT for protein, the second built to keep working in stomach acid. Amylase 2,500 DU for starch. Lipase 750 FIP for fat. The Lactose Question, Answered Honestly
There is lactase in here, and it is the reason many people reach for this blend. But at 200 ALU it is a modest amount, and if milk is specifically your problem rather than meals in general, this is not where we would send you.

So the honest split is this: if dairy is the trigger, take the lactase tablet; if meals in general are the trouble and dairy is one of several, this blend is the better buy. How to Take These Digestive Enzymes So They Work
One capsule with each meal, with water, at the start of the meal or during it rather than afterwards. The enzymes have to be in your stomach while the food is arriving, and a capsule taken an hour later, once you are already uncomfortable, never meets the food at all.
Avoid taking it on an empty stomach unless our doctor has told you to. Most people find one or two meals a day are the ones that need help rather than all three, so start there. At one capsule a day a bottle is about four months; at three a day it is about six weeks.
Keep the bottle tightly closed somewhere cool and dry. Enzymes lose activity in heat, which matters more in Nairobi than in the country it was packed in, so the kitchen windowsill is the worst place in the house for it.
One more practical point. If it is one particular kind of food that sits badly — fried food, beans and cabbage, a heavy meat meal — take the capsule at that meal and skip the others. The bottle lasts far longer and you will learn more about your own digestion in a fortnight than a year of taking one with everything would teach you.
Before You Buy, Two Things Worth Knowing
This blend contains sulfites, which is worth reading twice if you have ever reacted to them — they are a recognised trigger in some people with asthma. And the papain and bromelain mean it is unsuitable for anyone who reacts to papaya or pineapple.
Bromelain and papain may also add to the effect of blood-thinning medicines, and bromelain can change how some antibiotics are absorbed. If you take warfarin or anything else that thins your blood, or you are on a course of antibiotics, bring the packets to the counter and let our pharmacist look before you start. If you have surgery or a dental extraction coming, stop a couple of weeks before and tell your surgeon.

It suits an adult who gets heaviness or bloating after larger meals, who wants the widest enzyme cover rather than one specific enzyme, and who has had the worrying causes ruled out. The activity figures are properly declared and it is vegetarian, which is more than most of this shelf manages.

What is in Plant Enzymes?

Why are activity units better than milligrams?
Milligrams tell you how much powder is in the capsule. Activity units tell you how much work the enzyme can actually do, which is the thing you are buying. Most products on this shelf print the first and not the second.
When should I take it?
One capsule at the start of each meal or during it, with water. Taken an hour afterwards it never meets the food. Avoid taking it on an empty stomach unless our doctor has advised it.
How many a day?

Will it help my lactose intolerance?

How is it different from Digestizyme?
Both carry eight enzymes. This one has lactase and more than twice the lipase for fat; Digestizyme has far more of the two fruit proteases. Tell our pharmacist what sits heaviest with you and we will choose between them.
Is it vegetarian?
Yes, and it is non-GMO. None of the enzymes come from animal sources, which is the difference between this and a pancreatin capsule.
Does it contain allergens?
It contains sulfites, and the papain and bromelain come from papaya and pineapple. It is not made with milk, egg, fish, shellfish, tree nuts or sesame. If you react to sulfites, papaya or pineapple, please talk to our pharmacist before buying.
Can I take it with my medicines?
Bring them to the counter. Bromelain and papain may add to the effect of blood thinners such as warfarin, and bromelain can change how some antibiotics are absorbed. Two minutes with the packets in front of us settles it.
I have surgery soon. Should I stop?
Stop a couple of weeks before and tell your surgeon you have been taking it. That is standard with anything that may affect clotting, and bromelain and papain both may.
Are there side effects?
Most people take it without trouble. Some notice mild stomach discomfort or looser stools in the first few days, which usually settles; starting with one capsule a day rather than three makes that less likely.
Can children take it?
