What Digestizyme Digestive Enzymes Do
Digestizyme is the digestive enzyme capsule taken for the heaviness and bloating that settle in after a large or rich meal. Each capsule carries eight enzymes that work on fat, starch, protein and fibre, and the way to take it is one capsule at the start of each main meal, up to three a day. A bottle holds 100 vegan capsules.
Your own pancreas and gut lining make these enzymes, and for most healthy people they make plenty of them. What a supplement like this does is add more to the meal itself. No authorised health claim exists for any enzyme in this capsule, so we hold back from promising you a result. What we give you instead is exactly what is in it, how to take it so it works, and when the answer is our doctor rather than a capsule.
Take It at the Start of the Meal, Not After
This is the single most common mistake with digestive enzymes and it is the difference between a bottle working and a bottle being wasted. The capsule has to be in your stomach while the food is arriving, so it goes down with your first few mouthfuls, with water, swallowed whole.
Taking one an hour after a heavy meal, when you already feel uncomfortable, is too late for the enzymes to meet the food. If rich or fatty meals are your problem, take it at the meal you know will be rich rather than at all three.
When Bloating Needs Our Doctor Rather Than Digestive Enzymes
Please come and see us, rather than buying this, if any of the following is true of you. Indigestion and bloating are usually harmless, and occasionally they are the first sign of something that needs finding early.
Come in if your symptoms have gone on for more than a few weeks, if they are new and you are over 45, if you are losing weight without meaning to, if swallowing has become difficult, if there is blood in your stool or your stool has turned black, if you are vomiting, or if pain wakes you at night. Our doctor can test for the common causes — the stomach bacterium that causes a great many ulcers, coeliac disease, and the others — most of which have a proper treatment and none of which an enzyme capsule will fix.
The reason we put this before the sales pitch is simple. An enzyme capsule can quiet a symptom while the cause carries on, and we would rather you came in and got checked.
If You Take Any Medicines, Read This First
Two of the eight enzymes here are bromelain, from pineapple, and papain, from papaya. Both are useful and both are worth a word with our pharmacist before you start.
Bromelain and papain may add to the effect of blood-thinning medicines, so if you take warfarin or anything else for thinning your blood, bring the packets to the counter and let us look. Bromelain can also change how some antibiotics are absorbed, so if you are on a course, ask us about timing. And if you react to pineapple, to papaya, or to latex, mention it, because papain and bromelain are the reason.
If you have surgery or a dental extraction coming up, stop a couple of weeks before and tell your surgeon you have been taking it. That is ordinary practice with anything that affects clotting and nobody thinks to mention it.
Which Digestive Enzymes Are in Each Capsule
Lipase 313 FIP for fat. Amylase 5,000 DU and glucoamylase 9 AGU for starch and complex sugars. Protease 4.5 at 10,000 HUT and protease 3.0 at 10 SAPU for protein, the second one built to work in the acid of the stomach. Cellulase 200 CU for plant fibre. Bromelain 120,000 PU and papain 50,000 PU, both protein-digesting enzymes from fruit.
None of the enzymes come from animal sources, which is why the capsule suits vegetarians and vegans, and the shell itself is cellulose rather than gelatin. The activities are given in the standard units each enzyme is measured in, which is worth having, because a great many enzyme products print a weight in milligrams that tells you nothing about how active the enzyme actually is.
There is no lactase in this capsule. If milk specifically is what disagrees with you rather than meals in general, lactase is the enzyme you want, and we stock it separately as Quest Lactase Enzyme. Ask our pharmacist which of the two fits what you are describing, because for a great many people in Kenya the answer is the lactase.
How Far 100 Capsules Go
At one capsule a day, a bottle is over three months. At the full three a day it is about five weeks. Most people find they need it at one or two meals rather than all three, so somewhere between those two is usual.
Keep it somewhere cool, dry and out of the light; enzymes lose activity with heat, which matters more in Nairobi than it does in the country this was packed in. Tell us how many months you want covered and we will work out the order.
We also stock Plant Enzymes, which does a similar job in a 120-capsule bottle, and konjac fibre capsules if what you actually want is to feel full and eat less rather than help with a meal you have already eaten. Tell our pharmacist which of those three describes your problem and we will sort it out at the counter.
Is Digestizyme Right for You?
It suits an adult who gets heaviness or bloating after larger or richer meals, who has had the worrying causes ruled out, and who wants to take something with the meal itself. The enzyme activities are properly declared and the capsule is suitable for vegans, which is more than most of this shelf can say.
Please speak to us first if any of these describes you:
- You take warfarin or any other blood-thinning medicine, or you have surgery coming up. Bring your medicines to the counter.
- You are on a course of antibiotics. Ask our pharmacist about timing.
- You react to pineapple, papaya or latex. Bromelain and papain are the reason to mention it.
- Your symptoms have lasted more than a few weeks, or you have any of the warning signs set out above. Please see our doctor instead.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding, or buying it for a child. This is not recommended for either.
- You have been diagnosed with coeliac disease, pancreatic trouble or inflammatory bowel disease. Those have their own treatment and this is not it.
And if you are simply not sure, ask our pharmacist before you buy. Digestive discomfort has a dozen causes and a capsule is the right answer to only some of them.

Digestizyme 100’s: Your Questions Answered
What is Digestizyme used for?
It is a digestive enzyme capsule taken with meals by people who get heaviness, bloating or discomfort afterwards. Each capsule carries eight enzymes that act on fat, starch, protein and fibre. No authorised health claim exists for these enzymes, so we hold back from promising a result and tell you what is in it and how to take it properly instead.
When should I take it?
At the start of the meal, with your first few mouthfuls and a glass of water. This is the most common thing people get wrong. Taken an hour later, when the discomfort has already arrived, the enzymes never meet the food.
How many can I take a day?
One capsule at the start of each main meal, up to three a day. Most people find one or two meals are the ones that need it rather than all three.
Which digestive enzymes are in it?
Lipase 313 FIP, amylase 5,000 DU, protease 4.5 at 10,000 HUT, protease 3.0 at 10 SAPU, glucoamylase 9 AGU, cellulase 200 CU, bromelain 120,000 PU and papain 50,000 PU. The activities are given in the proper units for each enzyme rather than as a weight, which is the only way to tell how active they are.
Will it help with bloating and indigestion?
That is what people take it for, and we are not permitted to promise it. What matters more is the other half of the answer: if your bloating has gone on for weeks, or it is new and you are over 45, or you are losing weight, or swallowing has become difficult, please come and see our doctor before you buy anything. Those are the things worth checking.
Is it suitable for vegetarians and vegans?
Yes. None of the enzymes are animal-derived and the capsule shell is cellulose rather than gelatin.
Can I take it with my other medicines?
Bring them to the counter and let our pharmacist look. Bromelain and papain may add to the effect of blood-thinning medicines such as warfarin, and bromelain can change how some antibiotics are absorbed. Both are worth two minutes of a pharmacist’s time before you start.
I am having an operation soon. Can I keep taking it?
Stop a couple of weeks before and tell your surgeon you have been taking it. That is standard with anything that may affect clotting, and bromelain and papain both may.
Does it contain lactase for milk?
No, there is no lactase in this capsule. If milk is specifically what troubles you, lactase is the enzyme that matters and we sell it on its own as Quest Lactase Enzyme — ask our pharmacist, because in Kenya that is the commoner problem of the two.
Are there side effects?
Most people take it without trouble. Some notice mild stomach discomfort or loose stools when they start, which usually settles; starting at one capsule a day rather than three makes that less likely. If you react to pineapple or papaya, mention it to us before buying.
Can children take it?
No. This is not recommended for children, and please see our doctor about any child with ongoing digestive trouble rather than giving them a supplement.
Can I take it during pregnancy?
It is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Please come and see our doctor, because indigestion in pregnancy is common and there are things we can safely suggest.
How long will a bottle last?
Between about five weeks at three capsules a day and over three months at one a day. Keep it cool, dry and out of the light, because enzymes lose activity in heat. Tell us how many months you want covered and we will work out the order.
