What This Thyroid Tea Contains, and Why That Needs Saying First
Nutra Thyroid Kelp & Nettle Tea is the thyroid tea people reach for when they are tired, feeling cold or worried about their thyroid, two to three cups a day, built on nettle at 30%, lemon balm at 15% and kelp at 10%, with bugleweed, bladderwrack, ashwagandha, rhodiola, Siberian ginseng, black walnut, liquorice and bacopa alongside them. Please read the next two sections before you buy, because this is the one blend on our shelves where who you are matters more than what the tea is.
Two of those ingredients are seaweeds. Kelp and bladderwrack both carry iodine, and iodine is the raw material the thyroid uses to make its hormones. That is the reasoning behind the blend. It is also the reason this tea needs a conversation rather than a basket, because the amount of iodine in seaweed varies enormously between batches, and more iodine does less for a thyroid than most people assume.
If You Have a Thyroid Condition, Please Talk to Our Doctor First
This is the important part. The French food safety agency advises against seaweed and seaweed-based products for people with thyroid dysfunction, for people with heart disease or kidney failure, for anyone taking medicines containing iodine or lithium, and for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding without medical advice.
Regular excessive iodine can itself cause thyroid dysfunction, in either direction, and the same agency makes a further point worth repeating: someone who is short of iodine should not use seaweed products to correct it, because the amount in a cup is unknowable. The tolerable upper intake for iodine in adults is 600 micrograms a day, and France caps iodine in food supplements at 150 micrograms a day for the same reason. A tea sold for the thyroid, containing two seaweeds, is therefore a product to discuss with our doctor if your thyroid is the reason you are looking at it.
If You Take Thyroid Medicine, This Matters More Still
A levothyroxine dose is set by blood tests and adjusted by them. Anything that changes your iodine intake can shift where those numbers sit, which means a daily seaweed tea can move a dose that took months to settle.
So please never adjust or stop your thyroid tablets, and please bring the tea to our doctor before you start rather than afterwards. Tell them you are considering it, and let them decide whether to check your levels first. Our doctor is at the pharmacy and that is a short conversation with a clear answer at the end of it.
Two Things in the Blend Worth Knowing About
Bugleweed is in here, and it is traditionally used for the opposite purpose to iodine: it is the herb reached for when a thyroid is running fast rather than slow. So the bag contains an iodine source and a herb traditionally used to damp a thyroid down, which is worth understanding before you drink it daily for either problem. Our pharmacist will go through the whole list with you.
And black walnut is in the blend, which makes this a tree nut product. Anyone with a nut allergy should leave it alone, and anyone unsure should ask us to read the box with them. Ashwagandha is in there too, which is a herb to avoid in pregnancy and one that has its own effects on thyroid hormones, and liquorice, which is worth checking against any blood pressure medicine you take.
What We Are Permitted to Tell You
No health claim for any of these botanicals is authorised. Every botanical claim submitted in Europe remains on hold, so nobody may lawfully say a tea regulates your thyroid hormone production, balances your hormones or soothes a thyroid nodule, and we hold back from saying it.
That last one deserves a sentence of its own. A lump or a nodule in the neck is something to have examined, because the reason to look at one is to find out what it is. Please see our doctor about a nodule rather than drinking anything for it.
Who This Tea Suits Without a Conversation
Somebody with a healthy thyroid, taking no thyroid medicine, not pregnant or breastfeeding, with no nut allergy and no blood pressure medicine, who likes a nettle and lemon balm tea and wants to drink it a few times a week. That is a real customer and this is a pleasant tea. If you simply want a calming evening cup rather than anything to do with a thyroid, our chamomile and valerian tea is the simpler choice, and if the tiredness is the whole of it, ask our pharmacist about the green tea and ginseng blend instead.
If instead you are here because you are tired, gaining weight, feeling cold or losing hair, that is a blood test rather than a tea. A simple thyroid test answers in a day what a year of tea leaves open, and our doctor can arrange it. Then if your thyroid is fine, come back and buy this because you like it, which is a much better reason.
How to Brew It
Pour 200 ml of freshly boiled water over one bag, brew four to five minutes, squeeze the bag gently. Each bag can be used more than once, and the box holds twenty.
If our doctor has agreed you can drink it, a few cups a week is a gentler place to start than three cups every day, and it leaves you room to see how you feel. Keep it away from your thyroid tablet by a good few hours, take the tablet on an empty stomach as you will have been told, and mention the tea at every clinic visit.
Is This Thyroid Tea Right for You?
Please talk to our doctor before you buy if any of these apply to you.
- Any thyroid condition, overactive or underactive. Seaweed is advised against in thyroid dysfunction, and this blend contains two seaweeds. Our doctor should decide.
- Thyroid medicine such as levothyroxine, or lithium, or any iodine-containing medicine. Please bring it to our doctor before you start, and never adjust your own dose.
- Heart disease or kidney failure. Both are named in the same advice against seaweed products.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding. Seaweed is advised against without medical advice, and the ashwagandha in the blend is one to avoid in pregnancy.
- A nut allergy. Black walnut is in the blend, so this is a tree nut product.
- A lump or swelling in your neck, or a hoarse voice that has lasted weeks. Please see our doctor rather than drinking anything for it.

Nutra Thyroid Kelp & Nettle Tea: Your Questions Answered
What is in this thyroid tea?
Nettle at 30%, lemon balm at 15% and kelp at 10%, with bugleweed, bladderwrack, ashwagandha, rhodiola, Siberian ginseng, black walnut, liquorice and bacopa. Twenty bags to a box.
I have a thyroid condition. Should I drink it?
Please talk to our doctor first. Seaweed and seaweed-based products are advised against for people with thyroid dysfunction, and this blend contains two seaweeds, kelp and bladderwrack.
Why is seaweed the issue?
Because iodine is. The iodine content of seaweed varies enormously between batches, and regular excessive iodine can itself cause thyroid dysfunction in either direction. The tolerable upper intake for adults is 600 micrograms a day.
I take levothyroxine. Can I drink it?
Bring it to our doctor before you start. A levothyroxine dose is set and adjusted by blood tests, and a daily seaweed tea can shift where those numbers sit. Never adjust or stop your tablets yourself.
I think I am low in iodine. Will this fix it?
Please do not use it for that. The advice is explicit: someone short of iodine should not use seaweed products to correct it, because the dose cannot be known. Come and see our doctor instead.
Does it contain nuts?
Yes. Black walnut is in the blend, which makes this a tree nut product. Anyone with a nut allergy should leave it alone.
What is bugleweed doing in it?
Bugleweed is traditionally used when a thyroid runs fast rather than slow, so the bag holds an iodine source and a herb traditionally used to damp a thyroid down. Worth understanding before drinking it daily for either problem.
Will it regulate my thyroid hormones?
We are not permitted to tell you that, and nobody else is either. No botanical claim of that kind has ever been authorised.
I have a lump in my neck. Will this help?
Please see our doctor about it rather than drinking anything for it. The reason to look at a lump is to find out what it is.
I am tired and gaining weight. Should I start with this?
Start with a blood test. A thyroid test tells you in a day what a tea cannot tell you in a year, and our doctor can arrange it. If your thyroid is fine, come back and buy the tea because you enjoy it.
Can I drink it in pregnancy or while breastfeeding?
Please ask our doctor. Seaweed is advised against without medical advice, and the ashwagandha in the blend is one to avoid in pregnancy.
How many cups a day?
If our doctor has agreed, a few cups a week is a gentler start than three a day. Keep it a good few hours away from any thyroid tablet.
How do I brew it?
Pour 200 ml of freshly boiled water over one bag, brew four to five minutes and squeeze the bag gently. Each bag can be used more than once.
