Nutra Trim Tea 20s with Garcinia Cambogia and Guarana
Nutra Trim Tea is a sixteen-herb infusion from NutraTea in the United Kingdom, built around green tea, garcinia cambogia and guarana, and sold to help support weight management alongside a normal diet.
We will be straighter about this tea than the box is. Most of what it does in the first fortnight is move water and move your bowels, and the scale responds to both. Some of the herbs are useful. One is a stimulant laxative that regulators treat as a medicine, and it is not named on our own ingredient list. The four sections below set out why, and the one after them matters if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or on medication.
What Is Actually in Nutra Trim Tea
The manufacturer lists sixteen botanicals: green tea at twenty per cent, fennel and nettle at ten per cent each, garcinia cambogia and guarana at five per cent each, then hibiscus, ginger, cinnamon, cayenne pepper, alder buckthorn, dandelion root, burdock root, juniper berry, couch grass, black pepper and kelp. Twenty biodegradable bags to a box, and each bag can be re-brewed up to three times in a day, so a box stretches to around sixty cups.
Most listings for this tea name fourteen of the sixteen. Alder buckthorn is one of the two it leaves out, and it is the one that most changes who should drink this tea. The full list is above. If the box you receive lists something different from what is written here, follow the box and tell us, because a formulation can change between production runs and the pack in your hand is the authority.
What the Scale Is Measuring in the First Two Weeks
Group the herbs by what they do and the tea explains itself. Nettle, dandelion, juniper berry and couch grass are diuretics, so you pass more urine. Alder buckthorn is a stimulant laxative, so the bowel empties more readily. Green tea, guarana, cayenne and black pepper are mild stimulants. Garcinia and fennel act on appetite and digestion.
Water and stool both weigh something, so three cups a day of a diuretic-and-laxative blend usually moves the scale in the first week or two. That reading is real and it is also not fat. It returns when you stop. What reduces body fat is an energy deficit held over months, and no infusion substitutes for it.
Alder Buckthorn — Read This Part Twice
Alder buckthorn bark is a stimulant laxative, not a slimming herb, and the medicines regulators treat it as a medicine. The European Medicines Agency monograph for frangula bark, which is alder buckthorn, licenses it for short-term use in occasional constipation and says plainly that it is not to be used for more than one week. It is contraindicated in pregnancy, in breastfeeding, and in children under twelve. It is contraindicated in intestinal obstruction, appendicitis, inflammatory bowel disease, abdominal pain of unknown cause and severe dehydration.
A slimming tea tells you two to three cups a day with no end date. Both positions cannot be right. Prolonged use of any stimulant laxative can impair bowel function and create dependence, meaning the bowel stops working properly without it, and it drains potassium. Low potassium matters most to anyone taking a heart medicine, a diuretic or a steroid, and that is not a theoretical list: the monograph names cardiac glycosides such as digoxin, antiarrhythmics, diuretics, corticosteroids and liquorice root as interactions.
Liquorice root is on that list, and we sell a liquorice tea. Do not drink both. They pull potassium in the same direction, and the combination is the one we would least like a customer to assemble out of our own catalogue without being told.
There is a regulatory question moving alongside this. Buckthorn preparations sit in the European Union list of substances under scrutiny, and a draft regulation now in its scrutiny period would move buckthorn, senna and rhubarb preparations into the prohibited list for foods, following a European Food Safety Authority opinion on genotoxicity. Nothing is prohibited today and this is not Kenyan law. It is here because a customer buying a daily tea deserves to know its regulatory position in the market where it is made is unsettled.
Who Should Not Drink Nutra Trim Tea
Do not drink it at all if you are pregnant or trying to conceive, if you are breastfeeding, or if the person drinking it is under twelve. That is the buckthorn, and it is a firm no rather than a conversation with your doctor. Juniper berry gives a second reason in pregnancy.
Do not drink it if you have any bowel condition — inflammatory bowel disease, a history of obstruction, unexplained abdominal pain, or if you already use laxatives. Do not drink it if you have a thyroid condition, for the reason below. Leave it alone if you have kidney disease, for the diuretic load, or liver problems, for the garcinia.
Kelp, Iodine and Your Thyroid
Kelp is often described as supporting thyroid health. A pharmacist would say close to the opposite, and here is why.
Kelp is seaweed and seaweed concentrates iodine. An adult needs 100 to 300 micrograms of iodine a day, and thyroid problems become possible above roughly 150 micrograms from supplements on top of a normal diet. Kelp preparations have been measured at around a milligram a dose, several times that, and iodine-induced thyroid overactivity after kelp-containing teas is documented.
The tea does not state how much iodine a cup delivers, and neither can we. The rule clinicians use: avoid kelp with any thyroid disorder, and avoid it on levothyroxine, because it makes your dose unpredictable. If you are on thyroid medicine, this is not your tea.
How Much Caffeine You Are Drinking
Green tea and guarana both carry caffeine, and guarana is a concentrated source. The manufacturer calls the blend low caffeine and caps it at three cups a day. Re-brewing pulls out less each time, so the strongest cup is the first.
Keep the last cup well before bed. If you already drink coffee, count it. If caffeine gives you palpitations, tremor or anxiety, or you take medicine for blood pressure or a heart rhythm problem, a caffeine-free infusion is the better purchase.
Garcinia Cambogia, and What the Trials Show
Garcinia is the ingredient the marketing leans on hardest across this category. The honest summary of the human evidence is a weight difference against placebo of under a kilogram, with the better-designed trials finding less than the weaker ones and no effect lasting beyond the trial. At five per cent of a tea bag, the dose is far below what those trials used.
Garcinia has also been associated with liver injury in case reports, usually in concentrated supplement form rather than as a minor tea ingredient. The risk from this tea is low. It is not zero, and it is a reason to stop if the warning signs below appear.
How to Drink Nutra Trim Tea, If You Drink It
One bag in two hundred millilitres of freshly boiled water, steeped four to five minutes, squeezed gently. The manufacturer says two to three cups a day and no more than three. Given the buckthorn, our pharmacists would say one cup a day, and not every day — think of it as an occasional drink rather than a daily habit, and give it a rest after a week.
Drink water alongside it. A diuretic and a laxative together lose you fluid, and the headache and fatigue people blame on detoxing are usually just dehydration.
The Blood Sugar Claim, and Why It Is Not Available
This tea carries no recognised claim about blood glucose, and neither does any other botanical — none of the sixteen herbs here is an exception.
There is a second reason to be careful rather than merely correct. Several of these herbs do nudge blood glucose down a little, which matters in the opposite direction from a selling point: if you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, something is already lowering your glucose and this adds to it unpredictably. That belongs in the medicines list rather than in a benefit bullet.
Medicines to Check With Us First
Bring your list to the counter before you buy if you take any of these:
- Digoxin or another heart medicine, a water tablet, or a steroid — potassium loss from the buckthorn is the concern, and it can be serious.
- Levothyroxine or any thyroid medicine — the kelp makes your dose unpredictable.
- Warfarin or another blood thinner — green tea and ginger both interact.
- Diabetes medicine — several of these herbs nudge blood sugar down, which matters if something else is already doing that.
- Blood pressure or heart rhythm medicine — for the caffeine as much as anything.
- Any regular oral medicine — a laxative speeds transit, and a tablet that moves through faster may be absorbed less. Separate them by a couple of hours.
When to Stop Drinking It
Stop and speak to us or a doctor if you get cramping or diarrhoea that will not settle, muscle cramps or weakness, swollen ankles, a racing or irregular heartbeat, or light-headedness on standing. Those are fluid and potassium going the wrong way.
Stop immediately and seek medical advice for yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, pain under the right ribs, or unusual tiredness with loss of appetite. Those point at the liver, and they are why the garcinia section is here.
What We Would Suggest Instead
For a pleasant daily cup, buy a lemongrass and ginger or a rooibos infusion and drink as much as you like. Nothing here makes this a better everyday drink.
And if what you want is a product that can actually stand behind a weight claim, there is one, and it is not this tea. Our glucomannan konjac fibre holds a recognised weight-loss benefit within an energy-restricted diet, at a defined dose of 3 g a day taken as three doses before meals. It is one of a very small number of products anywhere entitled to say so. It costs more than a box of tea and carries its own water rule and its own list of people who should avoid it, so ask our pharmacist to walk you through it.
For a herbal cup with no laxative and no caffeine, the curcumin and piperine tea from the same maker is a gentler proposition on the same footing: traditional use rather than a recognised claim.
Weight change you keep comes from what you eat and how much you move, and our pharmacist will talk through where to start. If your weight is affecting your health, ask about seeing our doctor rather than working through the shelf.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Nutra Trim Tea burn fat?
No, and we would rather say so. Green tea, guarana and cayenne raise energy use very slightly, but not enough to matter against what you eat. The weight that comes off in the first week or two is water and bowel content, from the diuretic and laxative herbs in the blend, and it comes back when you stop. Fat loss comes from an energy deficit held over months.
Is there a laxative in it?
Yes. Alder buckthorn, also called frangula bark, is a stimulant laxative. The European Medicines Agency licenses it for short-term use in occasional constipation and says it should not be used for more than one week, yet the tea is sold for two to three cups a day. That is the single most important thing here, and it is why we suggest an occasional cup rather than a daily habit.
Can I drink it while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. This is a firm no rather than a check with your doctor. Alder buckthorn is contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding, juniper berry gives a second reason in pregnancy, and the blend also carries caffeine. If you are pregnant and want something warm, a plain rooibos or a weak ginger infusion is a better choice.
I take thyroid medicine. Is it safe?
No, leave this one. It contains kelp, which is a concentrated source of iodine, and iodine makes the levothyroxine dose you need unpredictable. Clinicians advise avoiding kelp in anyone with a thyroid disorder whether or not they are on medication. Ask us for a caffeine-free herbal tea with no seaweed in it instead.
How many cups a day should I drink?
The box says two to three and no more than three. Because of the buckthorn, our pharmacists suggest one cup a day at most, not every day, and a break after a week. Each bag re-brews up to three times, so a box of twenty goes a long way at that rate.
How soon will I see a difference?
You may see the scale move within days, and we want you to know what that number is. It is fluid and bowel content, not fat. Anybody promising visible fat loss in one or two weeks from a tea is describing the same effect and choosing not to explain it.
Can I drink it with the liquorice tea?
No, not on the same days. Liquorice and stimulant laxatives both lower potassium, and the frangula monograph names liquorice root specifically as an interaction. Choose one or the other, and if you take a heart medicine, a water tablet or a steroid, speak to our pharmacist before drinking either.
Is it safe with my blood pressure medicine?
Check with us first. The caffeine from green tea and guarana is one issue and the potassium loss from the buckthorn is the larger one, particularly if your blood pressure medicine is a diuretic. Bring the box or the name of the tablet and we will go through it with you.
Is it vegan and gluten-free?
Yes. The blend is vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, wheat-free, dairy-free, soya-free, sugar-free and kosher, in biodegradable bags. It is packed in a facility that also handles soy, mustard, celery, sesame and nuts, so severe allergy sufferers should take that into account.
Why does this listing say more about the risks than the box does?
Because we are a pharmacy and the box is packaging. Everything here comes from the manufacturer’s own ingredient list and from published regulatory monographs on the herbs in it. Nothing here says the tea is dangerous. It says who should not drink it and how often the rest of us sensibly should, which is what a pharmacist would tell you across the counter.
