What This Valerian Tea Is For, and How to Take It
Chamomile and Valerian is the valerian tea people reach for when a busy mind keeps them from sleep, one cup half an hour to an hour before bed. The blend is chamomile at 85% and valerian at 15%, which makes it mostly a chamomile tea with enough valerian in it to be worth naming, twenty bags to a box.
Valerian has a recognised traditional use for the relief of mild symptoms of mental stress and to aid sleep, which is a modest and honest claim and more than most of this shelf can offer. It also comes with three rules that nobody puts on a teabag, and one of them matters a great deal if you drive for a living or start work before dawn. The sections below give you the timing, those rules, and the sleep problems that deserve a doctor rather than a cup.
Timing, and Why It Needs a Fortnight
The published way to take valerian is a single dose half an hour to an hour before bedtime, with an earlier dose in the evening if needed, and no more than four doses in a day.
Then the part that saves people disappointment: valerian has a gradual onset, so it is unsuited to an acute, one-night problem. Continued use over two to four weeks is what the traditional use describes. If you drink a cup tonight and lie awake, that is the herb rather than the dose, and if the sleep has still not improved after two weeks, come and talk to us rather than doubling up.
If You Drive or Operate Machinery, Read This
Valerian may impair the ability to drive and use machines, and anyone affected should not drive or operate machinery. That is published advice rather than our own caution, and it is the most practical thing we can tell you about this tea.
It matters particularly for drivers, boda riders, anyone on a night shift and anyone working with machinery. So take your first few cups on an evening when you are not due to drive early, see how you feel in the morning, and tell our pharmacist what work you do before you buy. If you must be alert at dawn, we will suggest something else.
Who Should Leave It Alone
- Children under twelve. Valerian is not recommended below that age. Please come and see us about a child’s sleep instead, because the causes are different in children and usually fixable.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Safety has not been established at either stage, so the position is not recommended. Ask our pharmacist and we will give you something suitable.
- Anyone allergic to the daisy family. Chamomile is 85% of this blend, and ragweed and chrysanthemum sit in the same family.
And tell our pharmacist if you already take a sleeping tablet, a sedative, an antihistamine that makes you drowsy, or anything for anxiety, and whether you drink alcohol in the evening. Each of those is a reason for a two-minute conversation first rather than a reason to go without.
How Much Valerian a Teabag Really Carries
Honesty is better than enthusiasm here. The well-established dose for valerian is 400 to 600 milligrams of a dry extract, up to three times daily. A teabag at 15% valerian is a long way from that, which is why this tea sits properly in the category of a calming evening habit rather than a treatment for insomnia.
None of which is a mark against it. A warm cup at a fixed time, in a dim room, away from a phone, is a genuinely effective sleep cue, and the chamomile makes it pleasant enough to keep up. If you want the valerian itself at a dose the research describes, ask our pharmacist and we will show you a capsule.
Sleep Problems That Need a Doctor Instead
Most poor sleep is habit, stress, caffeine and a hot bedroom. Some of it is something findable, and those are the ones we would rather catch early.
Please come and see our doctor if you snore loudly and seem to pause in your breathing while asleep, especially with heavy daytime sleepiness, because that is treatable and it is dangerous for drivers. The same goes for waking every night at three or four in the morning with a low mood, for sleeplessness with weight loss, night sweats or a racing heart, for pain that keeps you awake, for needing something every single night for months, and for a child whose sleep is broken night after night. All of those have causes worth finding, and our doctor is at the pharmacy.
What We Are Permitted to Tell You
We may state the traditional use, which is the relief of mild symptoms of mental stress and to aid sleep. What nobody may claim is that a tea treats insomnia, anxiety or depression, and we hold back from saying anything of the kind.
What we can give you is the proportions, the timing, the two-to-four-week picture, the driving advice, the people who should leave it alone, the honest distance between a teabag and the studied dose, and the sleep problems that deserve a doctor. For an ordinary busy mind on an ordinary evening, this is one of the nicest and least complicated teas on our shelves. If the mornings are the problem rather than the nights, our ginseng tea is the daytime one, and our chamomile and ginger preg tea is the one to ask about if you are expecting.
Is This Valerian Tea Right for You?
Please talk to our pharmacist or our doctor before you buy if any of these apply to you.
- You drive, ride or operate machinery, especially early. Valerian may impair the ability to drive and use machines. Start it on an evening before a day off.
- A child under twelve. Not recommended. Please bring them in instead.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding. Safety has not been established. Ask us for an alternative.
- A sleeping tablet, a sedative, a drowsy antihistamine or anything for anxiety. Two minutes at the counter first.
- Hay fever from daisies, ragweed or chrysanthemum. Chamomile is 85% of this blend.
- Loud snoring with pauses, waking at three in the morning low, sleeplessness with weight loss or night sweats, or needing something nightly for months. Please see our doctor. Those have findable causes.
