Description

Liquorice Tea Kenya – NutraTea Liquorice & Cinnamon, 20 Bags

Liquorice tea from NutraTea is a caffeine-free herbal infusion of 50% liquorice root and 50% cinnamon, traditionally used to help soothe a dry throat and settle the stomach, supplied as 20 compostable tea bags that each make more than one cup.

Liquorice is a herb with a real pharmacological effect, and that is the most useful thing this page can tell you. Drunk daily for weeks, it can raise blood pressure and lower potassium in some people. That makes it a pleasant, useful tea for occasional use and a poor choice for anyone with high blood pressure, heart or kidney problems, or a pregnancy. The detail is below, and our pharmacists will go through it with you.

What Is in the Pack

  • Liquorice root 50% and cinnamon 50%, with nothing else added: no caffeine, no sugar, no flavourings
  • 20 biodegradable tea bags, which the maker says can be re-brewed up to three times each, so a pack makes forty cups or more
  • NutraTea Ltd, Hemel Hempstead, United Kingdom. Vegan, kosher, and free from gluten, wheat, dairy and soya

What Liquorice Tea Is Traditionally Used For

Liquorice root has been used for centuries as a demulcent, which means it coats and soothes irritated surfaces. That is why it turns up in throat and cough preparations, and why people reach for it for a dry cough, a hoarse voice or an unsettled stomach. The taste is naturally sweet without sugar, which is part of why it works as an evening drink.

Cinnamon is here for flavour and warmth, and it also carries a claim you should treat carefully. Cinnamon has been studied for blood sugar, and the trials disagree with each other: some show a small fall in fasting glucose, others none, and the amounts used were usually grams of cinnamon powder rather than what dissolves out of a tea bag. A cup of this tea is a pleasant drink, not a treatment for diabetes, and nobody should reduce a diabetes medicine because they have started drinking it.

What we will not claim: that it boosts immunity, detoxifies anything or lowers blood sugar. Those sentences are common on tea packaging and they are not supported by evidence strong enough for a pharmacy to repeat.

The Liquorice Caution, in Plain Terms

Liquorice root contains glycyrrhizin, which makes the body hold on to sodium and lose potassium. In some people that raises blood pressure, causes swollen ankles, headaches, muscle weakness or cramps, and in rare cases disturbs the heart rhythm. It is dose-related and it builds up with regular drinking rather than appearing after one cup. European food safety advice suggests that adults should not take in more than about 100mg of glycyrrhizin a day on a regular basis, and a strong liquorice tea taken two or three times daily can approach or pass that.

So treat this as a tea for some days rather than every day. A cup when your throat is sore, or in the evening a few times a week, is a reasonable use. Two or three cups daily for weeks on end is not, unless a clinician who knows your blood pressure has said otherwise. If you notice your ankles swelling, your rings tightening, unusual tiredness or muscle cramps, stop drinking it and speak to us or your doctor.

Who Should Not Drink This Liquorice Tea

Do not drink it at all if you are pregnant or trying to conceive. Regular liquorice intake in pregnancy has been linked to earlier delivery and to effects on the developing child, and it is one of the few herbal ingredients with a clear reason to avoid it. Breastfeeding mothers should avoid it too.

Avoid it, or ask a pharmacist first, if you have high blood pressure, heart failure, any kidney or liver problem, or a low potassium level. The same applies if you take a diuretic (a water tablet), digoxin, a corticosteroid such as prednisolone, insulin, or medicine for blood pressure or the heart, because liquorice can work against them or add to their effects. It is not a drink for children, and anyone who already eats a lot of liquorice sweets should count those too.

How to Brew It

  1. Pour 200ml of freshly boiled water over one tea bag and let it brew for four to five minutes; longer makes it stronger in flavour and in liquorice
  2. Squeeze the bag before removing it, then, if you like, keep it for a second or third cup later in the day
  3. Drink it warm, with or without a slice of lemon or ginger. The maker suggests two to three cups a day; for the reasons above we suggest keeping to one cup on the days you drink it, and not drinking it every day for long periods
  4. Keep the pack sealed, dry and out of direct sunlight, and use it within the date on the box

If You Have Diabetes or Are on a Weight Medicine

This tea changes nothing about your treatment. It is unsweetened and caffeine-free, which makes it a reasonable alternative to a sugary drink, and that is its honest contribution. If you take insulin or another diabetes medicine, keep testing as usual; if you are on a prescription weight medicine, a herbal tea is neither a substitute nor an addition that needs approval, though the liquorice caution above still applies and matters more if your blood pressure is already high.

A Tea for Every Day, and This One

If what you want is a herbal tea you can drink daily, this is not the one. The liquorice is exactly what makes it useful for a sore throat and exactly what makes it unsuitable as an everyday habit. A caffeine-free tea without liquorice, such as a lemongrass and ginger blend, is the better choice for a cup every evening, and it can sit beside this one in the cupboard: liquorice and cinnamon for the days your throat is rough, the milder tea the rest of the time. Ask us what we have in stock and we will tell you honestly which suits the way you drink tea.

Why Buy Your Liquorice Tea from HealthAlone?

HealthAlone is a pharmacist-led health ecosystem licensed by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board. On a herbal product, what a pharmacy adds is the part the packaging leaves out: who should not drink it, how often is sensible, and how it sits with the medicines you already take. Order it with the rest of your basket, or pick it up over the counter in Nairobi, and ask our pharmacist if you are unsure whether it suits you. It is one more step in our vision: building Africa’s most trusted health ecosystem, accessible to everyone, everywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is in NutraTea Liquorice & Cinnamon tea?

Liquorice root 50% and cinnamon 50%, and nothing else. It is caffeine-free, sugar-free and vegan, in 20 compostable tea bags.

How many cups does a pack make?

Forty or more. The maker says each bag can be re-brewed up to three times, so 20 bags go further than 20 cups.

How often can I drink liquorice tea?

Occasionally rather than daily. One cup on the days you want it is sensible; two or three cups every day for weeks can raise blood pressure and lower potassium in some people.

Is liquorice tea safe in pregnancy?

No. Regular liquorice in pregnancy has been linked to earlier delivery and to effects on the child. Avoid it while pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding.

Can I drink it if I have high blood pressure?

Better not. Liquorice makes the body retain sodium and lose potassium, which pushes blood pressure up. Ask our pharmacist if you want an alternative that suits you.

Does liquorice tea interact with medicines?

It can. Take care with water tablets, digoxin, corticosteroids such as prednisolone, and medicines for blood pressure or the heart. Bring your list to our pharmacist and we will check it.

Does the cinnamon lower blood sugar?

Not reliably. Trials of cinnamon disagree, and they used grams of cinnamon powder rather than a tea bag. Enjoy it as a drink, and do not change any diabetes medicine because of it.

What are the warning signs to stop?

Swollen ankles, tight rings, headaches, unusual tiredness, muscle weakness or cramps. Stop the tea and speak to us or your doctor; these settle when liquorice is stopped.

Is it caffeine-free?

Yes, entirely, which is why it suits the evening.

Can children drink it?

No. Keep it for adults, and remember that liquorice sweets add to the same total.
