NOW Pancreatin is a pancreatic enzyme capsule taken for the heaviness, fullness and discomfort that follow a meal, particularly a fatty one. One capsule carries 200 mg of pancreatin 10X, which is the strength equivalent of 2,000 mg of ordinary pancreatin, giving 50,000 USP units of protease, 50,000 of amylase and 4,000 of lipase. Pancreatin is the mixture of enzymes your own pancreas releases into the gut after you eat: protease for protein, amylase for starch, lipase for fat. How Much Pancreatin Is in a Capsule
200 mg of pancreatin 10X, which is a concentrated grade: 10X means it is ten times the strength of the standard pancreatin measure, so 200 mg of it is equivalent to 2,000 mg of ordinary pancreatin. In activity terms that is 50,000 USP units of protease, 50,000 of amylase and 4,000 of lipase per capsule.
Activity units are the figures that matter with any enzyme, and a weight in milligrams on its own tells you very little. These are the proper ones and they are worth comparing against anything else you are offered.
Alongside the pancreatin there is microcrystalline cellulose, gelatin for the capsule, MCT powder from coconut or palm kernel oil, and silicon dioxide. How to Take It
One capsule, one to three times a day, with a meal or between meals, swallowed whole with water. Take it with the meal rather than an hour afterwards; enzymes have to be there while the food is arriving.
Start with one capsule a day at the meal you find heaviest rather than three, and give it a few days. Most people find one or two meals are the ones that need help. At one a day a bottle is over three months; at three a day it is about five weeks.
