Buy Inulin Powder Online in Kenya – 250g Prebiotic Chicory Fibre

Inulin powder 250g is a prebiotic fibre extracted from chicory root, formulated to help feed the bacteria already living in your gut and to support regular, comfortable bowel movements.

Almost everybody who gives up on a prebiotic gives up in the first fortnight, for the same reason, and it is avoidable. Inulin is fermented by your gut bacteria, and fermentation makes gas. Start at the dose on the tub and you will be uncomfortable; start at a quarter of it and build slowly and most people are fine. That is the first section below, because it decides whether this tub gets finished or abandoned.

Start Small. This Decides Whether You Keep Taking It.

The label gives one to two teaspoons a day. That is where you are going, not where you begin.

Begin with a quarter to half a teaspoon a day and stay there for four or five days. Then increase by roughly the same amount every four or five days until you reach a level that suits you. Getting to the full dose should take two to three weeks, and there is no prize for arriving sooner.

Expect some wind and rumbling in the first two weeks even if you go slowly. That is fermentation, which is the point of the product rather than a fault in it, and it settles as the bacteria adjust. What is not normal is cramping, painful bloating or loose stools — if that happens, drop back to the dose that was comfortable, stay there for a week, and move up more slowly.

If you have never taken a fibre supplement before, or your diet is currently low in vegetables and pulses, go slower still. The less accustomed your gut is, the more it notices.

What a Prebiotic Actually Does

A probiotic is bacteria. A prebiotic is food for the bacteria you already have. Inulin is the second kind, and the distinction matters because they are sold as though interchangeable.

Inulin passes through the stomach and small intestine largely untouched and arrives in the large intestine, where your resident bacteria ferment it. That fermentation feeds the populations associated with a settled gut and produces short-chain fatty acids, which are the compounds most of the benefit is attributed to. It also draws water into the stool and adds bulk, which is where the effect on regularity comes from.

It is genuinely useful for constipation — softer, more regular stools within a week or two at a dose you tolerate. That is the best-evidenced thing it does and it is the honest reason to buy it.

What it is not is a quick fix or a treatment. If constipation is new, severe, painful, or comes with bleeding or unexplained weight loss, that is a conversation with a doctor rather than a tub of fibre, and we would rather you had it sooner.

How Much Is in a Serving, and How Long a Tub Lasts

Worth doing the arithmetic before you buy, because the label gives a range and a single figure and does not join them up.

A level teaspoon is roughly two to three grams of powder. Two teaspoons is roughly five. Chicory inulin is around nine-tenths fibre, so one teaspoon gives you something near two grams of fibre and two teaspoons give you the figure quoted on the tub. If you are taking one teaspoon, you are getting about half what the label advertises — which is fine, and worth knowing rather than assuming.

A 250g tub is between fifty and a hundred servings depending on where you settle, so somewhere between two and four months for one person. That makes it one of the better-value things on this shelf, and it is the sort of product worth buying once you know it suits you rather than as a first experiment.

If You Have IBS or a Sensitive Gut

This is the section to read before ordering, and it is the one the category usually skips.

Inulin is a fructan, which puts it firmly in the group of fermentable carbohydrates that trigger symptoms in irritable bowel syndrome. For a lot of people with IBS it makes bloating and discomfort worse rather than better, and that is a predictable response rather than bad luck. If you have been told to follow a low-FODMAP diet, inulin is one of the things that diet excludes.

That does not automatically rule it out — some people with IBS tolerate a small, slowly built dose and benefit from it. But it is a conversation to have with our pharmacist or your doctor before you start, not after a bad week. Do not begin it during a flare-up.

The same caution applies with any diagnosed bowel condition, after recent abdominal surgery, or if you are on medication for a gut problem. Ask first.

How to Use It

  1. Start at a quarter to half a teaspoon and build up over two to three weeks as described above
  2. Stir it into anything cold or warm — water, juice, porridge, yoghurt, a smoothie. It dissolves easily and is faintly sweet, which is why it disappears into most things
  3. Drink plenty of water through the day. Any fibre that draws water into the bowel needs water available to draw
  4. Take it at the same time each day if you can. A gut that gets a predictable amount adjusts faster than one that gets none on Tuesday and a heaped spoon on Wednesday
  5. Keep the lid on and the tub dry. It takes up moisture from the air and will clump if it is left open

What It Will Not Do

It is not a sugar substitute in any practical sense. Inulin is faintly sweet — roughly a tenth as sweet as sugar — so replacing sugar with it means using ten times as much, which would be an unpleasant amount of fermentable fibre in one sitting. Use it as a fibre, not as a sweetener.

It will not make you lose weight, it does not replace a meal, and it is not a probiotic. If what you want is the bacteria rather than their food, that is a different product and our pharmacist will point you at it.

Why Buy Your Inulin Powder from HealthAlone Kenya?

HealthAlone is a pharmacist-led health ecosystem licensed by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, and our stock is original, sealed and correctly stored. With a prebiotic the useful thing a pharmacy adds is the conversation before you start — how slowly to build up, whether your gut is the kind that will thank you for this, and when a bowel symptom is one to investigate rather than to manage with fibre. Ask our pharmacist, and ask before you buy.

We deliver across Kenya — Nairobi first, then Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Thika and beyond — and across East Africa to Tanzania and Uganda, with the wider African market where we are heading. Collect in person at Kahawa Sukari Shopping Center, Nairobi. Living abroad? Order online from the US or UK and we deliver to your family in Kenya.

It is one more step in our vision: building Africa’s most trusted health ecosystem, accessible to everyone, everywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start without the bloating?

Begin at a quarter to half a teaspoon a day, hold that for four or five days, then increase by the same amount every four or five days. Reaching the full dose should take two to three weeks. Some wind in the first fortnight is normal and settles; cramping or painful bloating means drop back to the last comfortable dose and go up more slowly.

Will it help my constipation?

Usually, within a week or two at a dose you tolerate. It draws water into the stool and adds bulk, and it is the best-evidenced thing inulin does. If constipation is new, severe, painful, or comes with bleeding or weight loss you cannot explain, see a doctor rather than starting a fibre.

Can I take it if I have IBS?

Ask first. Inulin is a fructan, one of the fermentable carbohydrates a low-FODMAP diet excludes, and for many people with IBS it worsens bloating rather than helping. Some tolerate a small, slowly built dose. Do not start it during a flare-up, and speak to our pharmacist or your doctor before you do.

What is the difference between a prebiotic and a probiotic?

A probiotic is live bacteria. A prebiotic is food for the bacteria you already have. Inulin is the second. They work together but they are not interchangeable, and buying one when you wanted the other is a common and avoidable mistake.

How much fibre am I actually getting?

A level teaspoon is about two to three grams of powder, and chicory inulin is around nine-tenths fibre, so one teaspoon gives roughly two grams of fibre. Two teaspoons gives the figure printed on the tub. If you are on the lower dose you are getting about half the advertised amount, which is worth knowing.

How long does a tub last?

Between fifty and a hundred servings depending on where you settle, so two to four months for one person. Work out your dose first and the value becomes easy to compare.

What can I mix it into?

Almost anything — water, juice, porridge, yoghurt, a smoothie, hot or cold. It dissolves readily and is faintly sweet, so it disappears into most things without changing them much.

Can I use it instead of sugar?

Not really. It is about a tenth as sweet as sugar, so matching the sweetness would mean an amount of fermentable fibre nobody would enjoy. Treat it as a fibre that happens to taste faintly sweet rather than as a sweetener.

Is it suitable for children, or in pregnancy?

Ask our pharmacist rather than adjusting an adult dose downwards. Inulin is a food ingredient and not inherently unsuitable, but the right starting amount depends on age and on what the gut is used to, and that is a two-minute conversation worth having.
