A male external catheter helps a man with urinary incontinence stay dry and keep his dignity without a tube passing into the bladder. Choosing Between 30mm and 35mm
The number is the diameter of the sleeve, and it has to match the man rather than be guessed at. Measure around the middle of the shaft, or at its widest point, and if the measurement falls between two sizes, take the smaller one.
- Too tight is the one to avoid. A sleeve that is too small can press on the urethra and hold back the flow of urine, which defeats the object and is uncomfortable with it.
- Too large shows itself immediately: the sleeve wrinkles as you unroll it instead of lying smooth, and a wrinkled sheath leaks. If that happens, come back to us for the next size down.

Why the Two-Piece Version Exists
On this version the adhesive comes as a separate strip rather than being built into the sleeve. You wrap the strip around the shaft first, then roll the sleeve over it.
That extra step buys you control. The strip can be positioned exactly where it holds best, which suits a man whose fit has been awkward with an all-in-one sheath, or where the shaft is shorter or its shape makes a built-in adhesive sit badly. It Is Natural Rubber Latex, and for Some People That Matters
This product is made of natural rubber latex, which may cause an allergic reaction in anybody who has become sensitised to latex. Please tell our pharmacist before you order if there has ever been a reaction to latex gloves, a latex condom, a dental dam or a balloon, or if anybody has mentioned a latex allergy in hospital.
Two groups should take particular care. People with spina bifida are advised to avoid latex products as a matter of routine, because sensitisation is common after years of exposure to latex devices. Fitting It, Step by Step
Trim the hair at the base with blunt scissors rather than shaving, because regrowth after shaving causes irritation. Wash with soap and water, then dry thoroughly: the adhesive needs dry skin and loses its grip on damp skin. If the man is uncircumcised, leave the foreskin forward in its normal position.
Place the rolled sleeve over the head of the penis with the narrow outlet pointing away from the body, and leave a gap of 1 to 2 cm between the tip and the outlet tube so the urine has somewhere to go. Unroll it fully, or to the length of the penis, then squeeze gently along the shaft to seal it. Use no creams and no powders anywhere near it, because they stop the adhesive working. And never use ordinary tape or a rubber band to hold a sheath on; a sheath that keeps slipping has the wrong size or the wrong fit, and we will change it.
Come to Us Straight Away If Any of This Happens
Take the sheath off immediately and contact us the same day if the penis swells, changes colour, becomes painful or goes numb. That means the fit is too tight, and it needs dealing with that day rather than at the next change.
Also come in promptly if no urine has drained into the bag for several hours, if the skin underneath is broken, blistered or raw, or if there is fever, shivering, pain in the back or side, or urine that has turned cloudy, bloody or strong-smelling. Those last ones suggest an infection, and our doctor can test and treat it.
What We Can Honestly Tell You
For a man with incontinence who has intact skin and a fit that can be measured, this is one of the better answers available: nothing enters the body, the skin stays dry, and it is invisible under trousers. It is also inexpensive, at a few hundred shillings a day’s worth.
It suits some men and not others.
