Ankle Support with Strap

This med textile ankle support with strap stops the ankle rolling outwards as well as compressing it, so a joint that feels unsure on uneven ground has something working across it rather than just around it. The elastic sleeve compresses and the separate strap wraps in a figure of eight under the arch and up round the ankle, which is the direction that resists the sideways turn. It sits between a plain sleeve and a lace-up brace. Please see our doctor first if you could not walk on it after the injury.

med textile Ankle Support with Strap: a Figure-of-Eight Strap Over an Elastic Sleeve

This med textile ankle support with strap stops the ankle rolling outwards as well as compressing it, so a joint that feels unsure on uneven ground has something working across it rather than just around it. The elastic sleeve does the compression and the separate strap wraps in a figure of eight under the arch and up round the ankle, which is the direction that resists the sideways turn.

It sits between a plain sleeve and a lace-up brace, both in what it does and in what it costs. It is the one to buy when a sleeve feels like it stops short and laces feel like too much, and when the ankle is fine on a pavement and uncertain on murram. Our pharmacist sizes it from a measurement round the ankle, shows you which way the strap goes, and will say plainly when the injury wants the brace instead.

Why the Strap Changes What It Does

A sleeve squeezes; a strap resists a direction. Compression all the way round helps swelling and makes a joint feel held, and it does very little to stop the ankle rolling, because squeezing a joint evenly resists nothing in particular.

The figure of eight is the shape that works. Under the arch, up across the outer side, round behind the ankle and back. That path pulls against the movement that turns an ankle over, which is why strapping tape is applied the same way.

And you set it yourself, in a minute, every time. Tape has to be reapplied correctly by somebody who can do it; a strap on a sleeve you do in the morning without thinking about it. The guidance treats braces and tape as equally good at preventing a recurrence and leaves the choice to preference, and in practice preference means what you keep doing.

Putting It On

Sleeve first, sitting down, foot at a right angle. Get the heel seated before anything else, because a sleeve twisted at the heel never settles.

Then the strap, with the foot still square. Start it on the inner side of the foot, take it under the arch, up across the outer side of the ankle, round the back and fasten. Firm against the outer side; that is the direction you are protecting.

Check your toes. Press a nail and watch the colour return. Pins and needles, numbness, a bluish or pale colour, coldness or pain getting worse all mean too tight.

Then stand and walk a dozen steps, and reset the strap. It beds in, exactly as laces do, and the version you fastened sitting down is looser once you are on your feet.

Where It Sits Among the Ten

Lighter than this: the Kedley elasticated sleeve for plain aching, which is the least expensive on the shelf, and the adjustable wrap for swelling that changes hour by hour through the day.

Firmer than this: the lace-up ankle brace, which is what to buy for a real sprain, for an ankle that gives way, or for going back onto a pitch. Among functional supports a brace has the greatest effect, so when the injury is genuine the brace is the honest recommendation.

Tell our pharmacist what the ankle does and when it does it — aches at the end of the day, feels unsure on rough ground, actually gives way — and those three answers point at three different products.

Before You Rely On It

If this is a fresh injury, the first question is whether a bone is broken, and a support answers nothing about that. Come to our doctor or go to a hospital today if you were unable to walk on it at the time and still struggle to take four steps, or if the bone itself is tender when you press either ankle knob.

And a strap protects a direction; balance protects the ankle. Once the pain allows, stand on the affected leg for thirty seconds at a time, several times a day, holding a worktop at first and then letting go. Proprioception is the risk factor you can actually change, and it is free.

Wash it by hand in warm water with mild soap, dry it flat in the shade, and replace it when the elastic stops springing back.

Is an Ankle Support with Strap Right for You?

This suits mild instability and ankles that feel unsure on uneven ground. Please speak to our pharmacist or our doctor before buying if any of these apply:

  • You were unable to walk on it after the injury, or the ankle bone is tender to press. Please see our doctor today before buying any support.
  • The ankle actually gives way rather than feeling unsure. That wants the lace-up brace and a proper look at the joint.
  • You have diabetes, poor circulation or numbness in the foot. A strap concentrates pressure in one line, so let our doctor advise and check the skin daily.
  • There is calf swelling with pain or warmth, or breathlessness. Go to a hospital rather than strapping the leg.
  • It is for a child. Ring us, because children’s ankle injuries involve growth plates and want seeing first.

Our pharmacists will size it, show you the figure of eight and the twelve-step reset, and our doctor is here if the ankle is doing more than feeling unsure.

FAQs

What does the strap add over a plain sleeve?

A direction. A sleeve squeezes evenly, which helps swelling and makes the joint feel held but resists nothing in particular. The strap wraps in a figure of eight under the arch and up across the outer side, which is the path that pulls against the movement that turns an ankle over. Strapping tape is applied the same way for the same reason.

How do I wrap the strap?

Sleeve on first, heel seated, foot at a right angle. Then start the strap on the inner side of the foot, under the arch, up across the outer side of the ankle, round the back and fasten. Firm against the outer side, because that is the direction you are protecting.

Why does it feel loose after a few minutes?

Because it beds in, exactly as laces do. Stand up, walk a dozen steps, and reset the strap. People who skip that step think the support does nothing.

How tight is tight enough?

Firm, with room to get a finger under the sleeve edge. Then press a toenail and watch the colour return. Pins and needles, numbness, a bluish or pale colour, coldness or pain getting worse all mean too tight.

Is this enough for a sprained ankle?

For a mild one on the mend, or an ankle that feels unsure on rough ground, yes. For a real sprain, an ankle that gives way, or going back onto a pitch, the lace-up brace is the honest answer, because among functional supports a brace has the greatest effect.

Is a strap as good as strapping tape?

The guidance treats braces and tape as equally good at preventing a recurrence and leaves the choice to preference. In practice the difference is what you keep doing: tape must be reapplied correctly every time by somebody who can do it, where this goes on yourself in a minute.

What size do I need?

Measure around the ankle just above the bony knobs with the foot at a right angle and send our pharmacist the figure in centimetres. med textile sizes by ankle circumference rather than by shoe size.

Does it fit the left or the right ankle?

Please tell us which ankle when you order. The sleeve suits either, and the direction you wrap the strap depends on which side you are protecting, so our pharmacist will show you.

Will it fit inside a shoe?

The sleeve will. The strap adds bulk across the ankle, so a lace-up shoe or a trainer takes it comfortably and a narrow or tight shoe may not. Tell us what you will be wearing.

Can I wear it for sport?

For training and for walking on uneven ground, yes. For a match, or anything with sudden turns, the lace-up brace gives more control and will stay put better.

How do I wash it?

By hand in warm water with mild soap, pressed out rather than wrung, dried flat in the shade. Replace it when the elastic stops springing back: hold it stretched and let go, and if it stays stretched it has gone.

Do I still need to do exercises?

Yes, and they matter more than the strap. Stand on the affected leg for thirty seconds at a time, several times a day, holding a worktop at first and then letting go. Proprioception is the risk factor you can actually change.
