What Propolis Liquid Is
Propolis liquid is taken as a few drops in water or juice from a 30 ml dropper bottle, and propolis itself is the resin honeybees gather from tree buds and use to seal and protect the hive.
That is a genuinely interesting substance and worth describing properly. Bees collect resin from poplar and other trees, mix it with wax and their own secretions, and line the hive with it. What ends up in a bottle is a resin extract — tree resins, waxes, essential oils and a large family of plant compounds called bioflavonoids. Bee Health are a long-established British bee-products house, and because propolis is measured in drops, one 30 ml bottle lasts a long time.
If You Are Allergic to Bees, Do Not Take This
We are putting this second because it is the single most important thing about any propolis product, and it belongs before the uses rather than after them.
Propolis is a recognised allergen. It is well enough established as one that dermatologists include it in the baseline series of substances they patch test people against, and the published literature on reactions to it goes back decades.
The documented reactions include allergic contact dermatitis, inflammation of the lips, dermatitis around the mouth, systemic reactions after swallowing it, and ulcerating inflammation of the lining of the mouth.
That last one matters here specifically, because the usual instruction for propolis liquid is to take it under the tongue — which is precisely the tissue involved. If you want to try it that way, our view is to put the drops in water or juice instead, at least to begin with.
Who should leave it alone altogether: anybody who has reacted to a bee sting, anybody allergic to honey, pollen or other bee products, and beekeepers, who are the group most often sensitised. If you have asthma, please speak to our doctor before you start rather than after.
And how to start if none of that applies to you. Begin with fewer drops than you intend to settle on, in water, and give it a few days. Stop and come and see us if you notice soreness or ulcers in your mouth, tingling or swelling of the lips, or a rash — those are the reactions to catch early, and they resolve when the product stops.
What Is in the Bottle, and the Question We Have Asked
Propolis resin extract, with the tree resins, waxes, essential oils and bioflavonoids that make it up.
And a question we would rather raise than skip: we do not know whether the carrier is alcohol. Propolis liquids are very often ethanol extracts, because resin dissolves readily in alcohol and poorly in water. This listing does not say, and we have asked.
It matters for three groups of our customers and we would rather you heard it from us. If you avoid alcohol on religious grounds, that is a question to settle before you buy rather than after. If this is for a child, an alcohol-based tincture is a different proposition from a glycerol one. And if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, the same applies. Ask our pharmacist and we will read the bottle to you before you commit.
No potency figure is published either — no propolis percentage, no extract ratio, no milligram amount. We have asked for that too, and until it arrives we will describe the bottle rather than rate it.
How to Use It
A few drops in water or juice, once a day. That is the instruction available to us, and we would rather give you our honest reading of it than invent a number: start low, keep it consistent, and ask us for the drop count once we have confirmed the strength.
Mix it rather than taking it neat under the tongue, at least at first, for the reason in the section above.
It stains. Propolis is a resin and it is dark and sticky. It marks teeth with prolonged neat contact, and it marks clothes and worktops permanently. Rinse your mouth after taking it, and wipe the dropper.
Keep the cap on tight and the bottle cool. The resin thickens as the carrier evaporates, and a half-used bottle left open becomes difficult to measure out of.
What We Will Not Claim for It
Propolis is one of the most heavily marketed natural products there is, and our honest reading is worth more to you than a repetition of that marketing.
No approved health claim exists for propolis anywhere in the European register. Not for immunity, not as an antioxidant, not for the throat, not for wound healing. Bee products sit with the botanicals: claims were filed, the scientific assessment was never completed, and the practical effect is that a shop may not print a benefit beside them.
So if immune support is what brought you here, there are honest alternatives on our own shelves. An effervescent with vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc carries recognised immune claims for all three nutrients, which is a real basis rather than an implied one. An effervescent vitamin C at 1,000 mg carries both the immune claim and the recognised claim for protecting cells from oxidative stress — which is the properly evidenced version of an antioxidant benefit.
What we will say about propolis is what is true: it is an unusual and long-used bee product, this is a reputable maker, and if you already take it and know why, we will keep it on the shelf for you. That is a smaller promise than the one on most propolis bottles and it is one we can stand behind.
Is Propolis Liquid Right for You?
- Not if you are allergic to bees, bee stings, honey or pollen. Propolis is a recognised allergen and this is the group most at risk. Beekeepers are the most commonly sensitised of all.
- Please speak to our doctor first if you have asthma. We would rather that conversation happened before the first dose.
- Ask us about the alcohol content before you buy if you avoid alcohol, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are buying it for a child. We have asked the supplier and our pharmacist will read you the bottle in the meantime.
- Stop and come and see us for mouth soreness or ulcers, lip tingling or swelling, or a rash. Those are the reactions worth catching early.
- If immune support is the goal, ask our pharmacist to compare the options with you. Several things on our shelves carry recognised immune claims and this one carries none, and we would rather tell you that than take the sale.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take propolis if I am allergic to bees?
No, and this is the most important answer here. Propolis is a recognised allergen — well enough established that dermatologists include it in the baseline series they patch test against — and anybody who has reacted to a bee sting, or who is allergic to honey, pollen or other bee products, should leave it alone. Beekeepers are the group most often sensitised of all. If you have asthma, please speak to our doctor before you start.
Is it safe to take under the tongue?
We would put the drops in water or juice instead, at least to begin with. The published reactions to propolis include ulcerating inflammation of the lining of the mouth, and under-the-tongue dosing puts neat resin extract directly on that tissue. Mixing it costs you nothing and avoids the one reaction most specific to this route.
Does it contain alcohol?
We do not know from this listing and we have asked. Propolis liquids are very often ethanol extracts, because resin dissolves readily in alcohol and poorly in water, but this bottle does not say and we will not guess. If you avoid alcohol on religious grounds, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or are buying it for a child, please ask our pharmacist to read you the bottle before you buy.
How many drops should I take?
The instruction available to us is a few drops in water or juice, which is not a dose, and we would rather say so than invent a number. Start lower than you intend to settle on, keep it consistent, and ask us for a drop count once we have confirmed the strength with the supplier.
What is propolis, actually?
The resin honeybees collect from tree buds, mixed with wax and their own secretions and used to line and seal the hive. An extract of it contains tree resins, waxes, essential oils and a large family of plant compounds called bioflavonoids. It is genuinely unusual and has been used for a very long time.
What does propolis do?
The straight answer is that no approved health claim exists for propolis in the European register — not for immunity, not as an antioxidant, not for the throat. Bee products sit with the botanicals, where claims were filed and never assessed, so a shop may not print a benefit beside them. If you already take it and know why, we stock a reputable one. If you are new to it and hoping for a specific result, please talk to our pharmacist first.
Is there something with an approved immune claim instead?
Yes. A vitamin C, D and zinc effervescent carries recognised immune claims for all three, and an effervescent vitamin C at 1,000 mg carries both the immune claim and the one for protecting cells from oxidative stress. Our pharmacist will compare them with you honestly.
Can children take it?
Please ask us first. There is no age guidance on this listing, the alcohol question above is unresolved, and propolis is an allergen — three reasons to have a two-minute conversation rather than guess. We will tell you plainly whether we think it suits your child.
Will it stain?
Yes. Propolis is a dark, sticky resin: it marks teeth with prolonged neat contact and it marks clothes and worktops more or less permanently. Rinse your mouth after taking it and wipe the dropper before you cap the bottle.
How long does a 30 ml bottle last?
A long time, because everything is measured in drops rather than spoonfuls. We will give you a proper figure once the strength and the drop count are confirmed, and we would rather do that than publish arithmetic we cannot support.
How should I store it?
Cap tight, somewhere cool and out of direct light. The resin thickens as the carrier evaporates, so a bottle left open becomes hard to measure from.
