Kid Liquid Echinacea(Orange U Delicious)

Kids echinacea is what parents reach for when colds start going round the classroom, in an alcohol-free orange and vanilla liquid most children will actually take, measured in drops against your child’s weight. Avoid it entirely if your child is allergic to daisies, ragweed, marigolds or chrysanthemums. And please read the age note before you buy: the herbal guidance for this species does not recommend it under 12 years, so talk to our pharmacist or our doctor before you give it to a younger child.

What Parents Use Kids Echinacea For

Kids echinacea is what parents reach for when colds start going round the classroom, in an alcohol-free orange and vanilla liquid most children will actually take.

Echinacea is recognised in European herbal guidance as a traditional herbal medicinal product for the supportive treatment of common cold — started at the first signs rather than taken all winter. This one is Herb Pharm’s children’s echinacea, made from Echinacea angustifolia root, with no alcohol in it and a dose measured in drops against your child’s weight rather than against their age, which is the more useful way to do it with children.

The Age Question, Which You Should Settle Before You Buy

We would rather raise this plainly than let a parent find it later.

The European herbal monograph for this species says use in children under 12 years is not recommended. The reason it gives is specific and worth understanding: use in that age group has not been established due to lack of adequate data. That is an absence of evidence rather than a finding of harm — nobody has shown how much a young child should have, so the assessment declined to endorse one.

Which is a different thing from saying it is dangerous, and we are not going to tell you that it is. Echinacea has been given to children for a very long time, this product is made and sold for children in its home market, and it is alcohol-free and gently dosed. What we will say is that the most careful assessment available stopped short of recommending it under 12, and a parent is entitled to know that before they spend money rather than after.

So our position is simple. If your child is 12 or over, the guidance above applies to them straightforwardly. If your child is younger, please come and talk to our pharmacist or our doctor and let us go through it with you — including whether something with firmer footing would serve your child better. We would rather have that two-minute conversation than take the sale and leave you guessing.

Who Should Avoid It Altogether

Any child allergic to daisies, ragweed, marigolds or chrysanthemums. Echinacea belongs to that same plant family, and hypersensitivity to it or to other plants in the family is the one outright contraindication in the European monograph. This is the most important line on the page and your current listing does not carry it.

Children prone to allergies generally. The monograph notes that atopic children may be at risk of anaphylactic reactions and should see a doctor before use. If your child has eczema, asthma or known hay fever, please speak to our doctor first.

Any child with a condition affecting the immune system, or taking medicine that acts on it. The monograph advises against use in progressive systemic diseases and in immune disorders. Bring the details to the counter.

How Much to Give, in Kilograms

The bottle doses by weight in pounds, which is no use at a Kenyan clinic, so here are the same amounts in kilograms.

11 to 22 kg: 8 drops daily.

23 to 34 kg: 16 drops daily.

34 to 45 kg: 24 drops daily.

Start it at the first signs of a cold rather than keeping it going all term. The label limits continuous use to 10 days in any month, and the monograph adds that if symptoms last more than 10 days, or a high fever develops, a child should be seen by a doctor rather than given more drops. That second half is the part worth remembering.

Drops go into a little water or juice, or straight onto a spoon. The orange and vanilla flavour is the reason this format exists, and with a young child that matters more than anything else on the label.

Things With Firmer Footing, If You Would Rather

Several nutrients carry recognised immune claims outright, and for a child under 12 that is a stronger basis than a traditional-use indication.

Zinc and vitamin C both contribute to the normal function of the immune system. A children’s chewable multivitamin carries both, is made for children 2 years and over, and covers a good deal else besides — please read its iron warning before you buy it. A children’s zinc lozenge carries more zinc again, and that page explains carefully why one a day is the limit.

And for the adults in the house, an effervescent with vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc carries recognised immune claims for all three. Our pharmacist will happily compare the lot with you and say which is worth your money.

Is Kids Echinacea Right for Your Child?

  • Not for a child allergic to daisies, ragweed, marigolds or chrysanthemums. Echinacea is in that family and this is the one outright contraindication. Ask us if you are unsure what your child has reacted to.
  • Please speak to our doctor first if your child is allergic or atopic. Eczema, asthma or hay fever all put this in the ask-first category, because of the anaphylaxis note in the guidance.
  • Under 12? Talk to us before you buy. The European guidance for this species stops short of recommending it below that age, and we would rather explain why than sell around it.
  • Not if your child has an immune condition or takes medicine acting on the immune system. Bring the details and let our doctor look.
  • Ten days a month, started at the first signs. If a cold runs past 10 days, or a high fever appears, that is a visit rather than more drops.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age is kids echinacea suitable for?

Please settle this with us before you buy. The bottle doses from 25 lb, which is about a two-year-old, but the European herbal monograph for this species says use in children under 12 is not recommended because it has not been established for want of adequate data. That is an absence of evidence rather than a finding of harm, and it is still something a parent should know first. If your child is 12 or over the guidance applies straightforwardly; if younger, come and talk to our pharmacist or our doctor.

How many drops should I give, in kilograms?

11 to 22 kg: 8 drops daily. 23 to 34 kg: 16 drops daily. 34 to 45 kg: 24 drops daily. The bottle gives these in pounds, which is no help at a Kenyan clinic, so we have converted them. Drops go into a little water or juice, or straight onto a spoon.

Which children should not take it at all?

Any child allergic to daisies, ragweed, marigolds or chrysanthemums — echinacea is in that same plant family, and hypersensitivity to it is the one outright contraindication in the European guidance. Please also speak to our doctor first if your child is atopic, with eczema, asthma or hay fever, because the guidance notes a risk of anaphylactic reactions in that group.

Does it contain alcohol?

No, and it is one of the better things about this product. Many liquid herbal preparations are alcohol tinctures, which makes them awkward for a child; this one is alcohol-free and says so plainly.

Can my child take it every day through the term?

No, and this is the instruction most often ignored. The label limits continuous use to 10 days in any month, and echinacea is meant to be started at the first signs of a cold rather than taken all winter. If a cold lasts more than 10 days or a high fever develops, that is a doctor rather than more drops.

What does echinacea actually do?

European herbal guidance recognises it as a traditional herbal medicinal product for the supportive treatment of common cold — supportive, and for a cold already beginning. That is a narrower and more honest statement than boosting a child’s immune system, and it is the one we will stand behind.

Is there something with firmer evidence for a young child?

Yes, and we would rather point you at it. Zinc and vitamin C both carry recognised claims for contributing to the normal function of the immune system. A chewable children’s multivitamin with zinc and vitamin C carries both and is made for ages 2 and over — do read its iron warning first. Our pharmacist will compare the options with you honestly.

What if my child has an immune condition?

Please talk to our doctor before giving any. The European guidance advises against echinacea in progressive systemic diseases and in immune disorders, and the same applies if your child takes any medicine that acts on the immune system.

How much echinacea is in each drop?

The listing does not say, and we have asked. There is no milligram figure and no extract ratio, so there is no way to relate the drop count to the amounts the monograph uses, which are given in grams of root. We would rather tell you that than publish a conversion we have invented.

What size is the bottle?

Not stated on the listing either, and also on our list of questions for the supplier. Ask us when you order and our pharmacist will read it off the bottle.

Will my child take it?

Most do. It is orange and vanilla flavoured and that is the whole reason this format exists — with a young child, a remedy they refuse is worth nothing however good it is.
