What People Take Shilajit For
Shilajit is what people reach for when they are tired all the time, feeling flat, or looking for their energy and drive to come back, in two capsules a day giving 1,000 mg of shilajit resin.
It is a dark mineral-rich resin that seeps from rock in high mountain ranges, built up over centuries from compressed plant matter, and it has been used in traditional medicine for as long as records exist. This version comes in 150 vegetarian capsules with ConcenTrace ionic trace minerals alongside the resin, and it is the form most people in Kenya ask us for because capsules travel and measure cleanly where a tar-like resin does not.
What Is in Each Serving
Shilajit resin, 1,000 mg per serving of two capsules, described as a 20:1 extract.
ConcenTrace ionic trace minerals, a sea-mineral concentrate, included to carry a spread of trace minerals alongside the resin.
150 capsules in the bottle, which at two a day is 75 days. Vegan, gluten free and in BPA-free packaging, made in a cGMP-certified facility and third-party tested.
And here is the figure we would like to put in front of you, because it is the one that separates good shilajit from ordinary shilajit. Shilajit is normally measured on its fulvic acid content, and the fulvic acid percentage for this product is not published anywhere. We have asked for it. When it arrives we will publish it, because it is the number a careful buyer should be comparing on and almost nobody states it.
The same goes for the trace minerals. If the mineral content were published, some of it would carry approved benefits in its own right — magnesium alone holds ten, including the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, which is precisely what most people come to shilajit for. Published amounts would turn part of this product’s appeal from tradition into something approved and checkable, and we would rather sell it on that.
The Testosterone Research, Named and Dated
This is the reason most men search for shilajit, so here is the actual study rather than a vague reference to “some studies”.
A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in Andrologia by Pandit and colleagues gave 75 healthy men aged 45 to 55 a purified shilajit at 250 mg twice daily — 500 mg a day — for 90 days. Total testosterone rose about 20% and free testosterone about 19% against placebo. The branded material used in the trial was supplied by its manufacturer, which is worth knowing when you weigh it up.
Three things that matter when you read that, and we would rather you heard them from us. The men in it were 45 to 55 with testosterone in the normal range, so it is not a study about correcting low testosterone. It used one specific purified material at 500 mg a day, which is half the daily amount in this product, though a 20:1 extract is not a like-for-like comparison with the trial’s material. And it is a single trial, which in supplements is more evidence than most products carry and less than a settled fact.
So our position is that this may help, on one good trial, and that three months is the honest length of time to judge it over — the trial measured at 30, 60 and 90 days and the change showed at the end.
Purity, and the Question Worth Asking Before You Buy
We would rather raise this ourselves than have you find it elsewhere, because it is the single most important thing about buying shilajit from anyone.
Shilajit comes out of rock, and rock contains metals. Properly purified shilajit has been processed to remove them; unpurified or poorly purified material has not. A study of 193 Ayurvedic preparations bought online, published in JAMA by Saper and colleagues, found detectable lead, mercury or arsenic in 20.7% of them, and every product containing metals exceeded at least one standard for acceptable daily intake. The study covered Ayurvedic preparations generally rather than shilajit specifically, and the worst results came from a category of preparations where metals are added deliberately — but the headline figure stands.
The detail from that study we would most like you to hold on to: 75% of the products that contained metals also advertised good manufacturing practice. A GMP statement describes how a facility is run. It is not a test result for the material in the bottle.
So this is what we are doing about it. We have asked our supplier for the certificate of analysis showing the heavy metal results and the fulvic acid content for the batch on our shelf. When we have it, you can ask to see it at the counter or we will send it to you. Ask us for it. Ask anyone selling you shilajit for it — and if they cannot produce one, that tells you what you need to know.
How to Take It
Two capsules daily with water and a meal, ideally in the morning. Taking it with food is what settles it for most people, and the morning suits it because the effect people describe is on daytime energy.
At two a day the 150-capsule bottle covers 75 days, which is close to the 90 days the trial ran for. Give it the full bottle before you judge it. People who stop at two weeks have not given it a fair test.
Our pharmacist will go through it with you before you start, and our doctor is at the pharmacy if you would like your tiredness looked at properly rather than guessed at — which, if it has been going on for months, is the better option.
Things With Approved Benefits Behind Them
Tiredness has causes, and some of them have nutrients with approved benefits attached. We would rather point you at those too.
For tiredness and fatigue: magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal energy-yielding metabolism, both approved. A chelated magnesium tablet reaches that amount in one tablet a day, and it works well alongside this rather than instead of it.
For the antioxidant side: vitamin C contributes to the protection of cells from oxidative stress, which is the approved version of that idea. An effervescent vitamin C at 1,000 mg clears it many times over.
And for immunity: an effervescent with vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc carries approved immune benefits for all three nutrients, which is firmer ground than any resin can stand on.
Is Shilajit Right for You?
- Ask us for the certificate of analysis before you buy. Heavy metals are the real question with shilajit and we would rather you asked us than wondered. We have requested it and we will show it to you.
- Please talk to our pharmacist if you take any regular medicine. Bring the list to the counter. A mineral-rich preparation alongside prescription medicines is worth two minutes of a pharmacist’s time, and our doctor is there if the whole picture needs reviewing.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding, or giving it to anyone under 18? Please speak to us first rather than reading a label. Unpurified shilajit is specifically not something to take a chance on in pregnancy.
- If you have gout, a kidney condition, or you have ever had a raised iron level, have a word with our doctor before you start, because a mineral-rich supplement is worth a conversation in those situations.
- If your tiredness has lasted months, come and see our doctor as well as buying this. Anaemia, thyroid trouble, diabetes and vitamin B12 deficiency all cause exactly this and all of them are treatable once found. A blood test is a better answer than a guess, and we would rather you had both.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do people take shilajit for?
Tiredness, feeling flat, and energy and drive that have dropped off. That is what people reach for it for and we would rather say so plainly. It is a dark mineral-rich resin that seeps from mountain rock, used in traditional medicine for centuries, and the modern interest in it is mostly about energy and testosterone.
Is there real research on shilajit and testosterone?
Yes, one good trial, and here it is properly. A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Andrologia by Pandit and colleagues gave 75 healthy men aged 45 to 55 purified shilajit at 250 mg twice daily for 90 days. Total testosterone rose about 20% and free testosterone about 19% against placebo. The branded material was supplied by its own manufacturer. One trial, in men whose testosterone was already normal, is more evidence than most supplements carry and less than a settled fact — so our honest wording is that it may help.
How much fulvic acid does it contain?
The figure is not published and we have asked our supplier for it. Fulvic acid content is how shilajit is normally graded, so it is the number you should be comparing on. When we have it we will publish it here. Anyone who cannot give you that figure is asking you to buy on faith.
What about heavy metals? Is it safe?
This is the right question and we will answer it straight. Shilajit comes out of rock and rock contains metals; purification is what removes them. A JAMA study by Saper and colleagues tested 193 Ayurvedic preparations bought online and found detectable lead, mercury or arsenic in 20.7%, with every metal-containing product exceeding at least one acceptable daily intake standard — and 75% of those products also advertised good manufacturing practice. A GMP statement describes a facility, not the contents of a bottle. We have asked our supplier for the certificate of analysis for our batch. Please ask us for it, and ask anyone else selling you shilajit for theirs.
How do I take it, and for how long?
Two capsules daily with water and a meal, ideally in the morning. At two a day the 150-capsule bottle lasts 75 days, which is close to the 90 days the trial ran. Give it the full bottle before deciding — two weeks is not a fair test of it.
Is 1,000 mg the same dose as the one in the study?
Not directly comparable, and we would rather explain than gloss over it. The study used 500 mg a day of one specific purified material. This product gives 1,000 mg a day described as a 20:1 extract, which is a different kind of preparation. More milligrams of a different thing is not automatically more of what was tested, which is another reason the fulvic acid figure matters.
Can I take it with my medicines?
Bring your prescription list to the counter before you start. A mineral-rich preparation alongside regular medicines is worth a pharmacist seeing, and our doctor is at the pharmacy if the whole picture is worth reviewing. Keep taking what you have been prescribed.
Are there side effects?
Mild stomach upset is the usual complaint, which is why it is taken with food, and some people notice skin changes. Anything more than that, stop and come and talk to us.
Can women take it?
Yes, and plenty do — the tiredness and energy reasons are not male. The testosterone trial was in men, so that particular finding does not transfer. Not in pregnancy or breastfeeding without speaking to us first.
Do you sell shilajit resin as well as capsules?
Not at present, and we know people ask. Capsules measure cleanly and travel well, which is why we stock them; the resin is sold by the gram and needs careful handling. Tell us if resin is what you want and we will see what we can source.
Is anything else better for tiredness?
Possibly, and it depends what is causing it. Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue as an approved benefit, and a magnesium glycinate tablet reaches that in one a day. But if tiredness has lasted months, come and see our doctor: anaemia, thyroid trouble, diabetes and B12 deficiency all cause it and all are treatable once found. A blood test beats a guess.
Is it suitable for vegetarians?
Yes. Vegan capsules, gluten free, and BPA-free packaging.
