The Cuff, and Why It Decides the Reading
The M1 Basic ships with a medium cuff covering an upper arm of 22 to 32 cm, and a wider cuff covering 22 to 42 cm is made for it. Please measure before you order.
A cuff that is too small for the arm reads higher than the truth, and one that is too large reads lower, which makes this the biggest single source of error in home blood pressure monitoring. It is how a heavier-set person comes to be told they have high blood pressure when they do not. Measure round the middle of your bare upper arm, halfway between the shoulder and the elbow, send our pharmacist the figure in centimetres, and we will put the right cuff in the box. Above 32 cm, say so and we will supply the wider one.
Taking a Reading Properly
Most wrong home readings come from how they were taken. Five minutes of care turns a number you half-believe into one our doctor will act on.
Rest quietly, seated, for five minutes first. Empty your bladder beforehand, and leave it half an hour after coffee, a cigarette, a heavy meal or exercise. Then sit with your back supported, feet flat on the floor and legs uncrossed, the cuff on a bare upper arm about two centimetres above the elbow crease, and the arm resting on a table so the cuff is level with your heart. Press the button once and stay quiet while it runs, because talking alone pushes the reading up. Take two readings a minute apart, write both down, and leave it for another time if you are in pain, upset or very hot or cold. The cuff inflates only as far as it needs to, which is why it is more comfortable than the machines most people remember.
The Week That Diagnoses Anything
If our doctor has asked you to monitor at home, or you want to know where you really stand, the proper way takes a week and it is worth doing once carefully rather than loosely for months.
Measure morning and evening at about the same times each day for seven days, and if you take blood pressure tablets, do the morning reading before them. Two readings a minute apart each time. Then set aside the whole of the first day, because first-day readings run high while people get used to the machine, and average everything from day two to day seven. That average is the figure that means something. With this model you will be writing each reading down as you go, so keep the notebook with the machine and bring both to your appointment.
What the Numbers Mean, and What to Do With Them
Home readings run a little lower than clinic readings for most people, so they are judged against a different line. A home average at or above 135 over 85 mmHg is the point at which our doctor will want to talk to you about high blood pressure, where the clinic figure is 140 over 90 mmHg. One reading on its own means very little.
Please bring the readings to our doctor rather than acting on them. Blood pressure tablets are adjusted on a pattern over weeks, and changing a dose because of a single number is how people come to harm. A reading at or above 180 over 120 mmHg is the one to act on now: rest five minutes, measure again, and if it holds there, contact us or get to a clinic the same day. With chest pain, breathlessness, severe headache, weakness or numbness down one side, trouble speaking or a change in vision, go to hospital rather than taking another reading. Readings much lower than usual with dizziness on standing or faintness also want our doctor, since that is often the tablets.
Batteries, Cleaning and Keeping It Honest
Four AA batteries come in the box and last several months on ordinary use. Rechargeable AA cells work in it too. Take them out if the machine is going unused for a long spell, since a leaked cell is the commonest way a home monitor dies.
Wipe the body with a dry or barely damp cloth and keep every part of it out of water. Clean the cuff with a cloth, mild soap and very little water, and let it dry fully before use. Keep it in its box rather than loose in a drawer, because a cuff creased in the same place for months stops wrapping evenly. And bring it in at your next visit so we can compare a reading on it against our own equipment, which takes two minutes and is the only practical accuracy check a home monitor gets.
