What This Uva Ursi Tea Is For, and the One-Week Rule

Nutra Release is the uva ursi tea women reach for when a mild water infection has them stinging and running to the toilet, two to four cups a day. The blend is dandelion at 20%, uva ursi at 20% and parsley at 20%, with cleavers, nettle, corn silk, buchu leaves and juniper berries alongside them, twenty bags to a box.

Uva ursi is a short-course herb. Traditional use runs to one week and no longer, so please treat this as a tea for the week of the infection rather than one to keep in the cupboard and drink every morning for your kidneys. The sections below give the dose, the review point and the people who should leave it alone.

One Week, and Four Days Before You Come Back to Us

Published traditional use of bearberry leaf, which is what uva ursi is, is for the symptoms of mild recurring lower urinary tract infection in women, once a doctor has ruled out anything serious. The tea dose is 1.5 to 4 g of the leaf in 150 ml of water, two to four times a day, and not more than 8 g in a day.

Then the limit: not to be used for more than one week. And a second, shorter one that matters more day to day — if your symptoms have still not settled in four days, or they are getting worse, stop drinking it and come and see us. Water infections that do not clear in four days usually need a urine test and often an antibiotic, and our doctor can arrange both.

Come Straight to Us for Fever, Blood or Back Pain

Some symptoms mean the infection has stopped being mild, and a tea is the wrong answer to all of them. Please come to the pharmacy the same day, or go to a clinic, if you have a fever or shivering, blood in your urine, pain in your back or side, vomiting, or severe cramping.

Those can mean the infection has reached the kidney, which needs treating properly and quickly. One harmless thing worth expecting, so that it comes as no surprise: uva ursi can turn urine a greenish-brown colour. That is the herb at work.

Who Should Not Drink It

Uva ursi is contraindicated in kidney disorders. Please read that twice, because anyone who already has kidney trouble is the one person who should leave this tea alone, whatever the shelf label suggested.

It is also not recommended under eighteen, and not recommended for men, because urinary symptoms in a man want a cause found rather than a tea. In pregnancy its use should be avoided, and while breastfeeding it is not recommended for want of data. Come and talk to our pharmacist in any of those cases and we will give you something suitable instead.

One more group worth naming, because it comes up at the counter every week: women who get these infections three or four times a year. A box of tea is a reasonable answer to one mild episode, and a poor answer to a pattern. Recurring infections have causes that can be found — and some of them, such as a sugar reading that nobody has checked or a habit of holding on all day at work, are straightforward to deal with once they are known. Our doctor can test and advise, and that visit is worth far more to you than a second box.

The Juniper, the Parsley and the Shelf

Three of the other ingredients want a mention. Juniper and parsley are both traditional water-shifting herbs, which is a reason to speak to our doctor first if you take a diuretic, a blood pressure medicine or a water tablet, so you are not pushing the same effect twice. Parsley in quantity also wants care in pregnancy.

And a word on the shelf: a tea built around a herb contraindicated in kidney disorders belongs with urinary products rather than under kidney health. If what you actually want is a gentle daily cup, our Nutra Cleanse Tea has no uva ursi in it; and if the real worry is uric acid and gout rather than infection, our cherry and nettle uric tea is the one to ask us about.

What We Are Permitted to Tell You

No health claim for uva ursi, dandelion, parsley or juniper is authorised, and every botanical claim submitted in Europe remains on hold. So nobody may promise you that a tea clears an infection, flushes a kidney or detoxifies anything, and we hold back from saying it.

What we can give you is the traditional indication in the words it is written in, the dose, the one-week limit, the four-day review, the contraindications, the red flags that mean the same day rather than next week, and where it really belongs on the shelf. Women have drunk bearberry for a stinging bladder for a very long time, and for the mild recurring kind that is a fair reason to buy a box.

Is This Uva Ursi Tea Right for You?

Please talk to our pharmacist or our doctor before you buy if any of these apply to you.

  • Any kidney disorder. Uva ursi is contraindicated. Ask us for something else, whatever the shelf it was filed on suggested.
  • Fever, shivering, blood in your urine, back or side pain, or vomiting. Come to us the same day. That is not a mild infection any more.
  • Symptoms lasting more than four days, or getting worse. Stop and come in for a urine test.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding. Avoid in pregnancy, and not recommended while feeding. We have alternatives.
  • A diuretic, water tablet or blood pressure medicine. The juniper and parsley push in the same direction. Check with us first.
  • Anyone under eighteen, any man with urinary symptoms, or infections that keep coming back. Please come and see our doctor so the cause gets found, rather than buying a second box.

Nutra Release Tea: Your Questions Answered

What is in this uva ursi tea?

Dandelion at 20%, uva ursi at 20% and parsley at 20%, with cleavers, nettle, corn silk, buchu leaves and juniper berries. Twenty bags to a box.

How many cups a day?

Two to four. The published tea dose for bearberry leaf is 1.5 to 4 g in 150 ml of water, two to four times daily, up to 8 g a day.

How long can I drink it for?

Not more than one week. Treat it as a short-course herb for the week of the infection rather than a daily cup.

When should I stop and come to the pharmacy?

If your symptoms have not settled within four days, or they are getting worse. That usually needs a urine test and often an antibiotic, and our doctor can arrange both.

What symptoms mean I should not wait?

Fever or shivering, blood in your urine, pain in your back or side, vomiting or severe cramping. Come to us the same day or go to a clinic. Those suggest the infection has reached the kidney.

My urine has gone greenish-brown. Is that bad?

That is the uva ursi and it is expected. Blood in the urine looks different, and that one is a reason to come in.

Can I drink it if I have kidney problems?

No. Uva ursi is contraindicated in kidney disorders. Please ask our pharmacist for an alternative.

Is it suitable for men?

It is not recommended for men. Urinary symptoms in a man want a cause found, so please come and see our doctor.

Can my daughter drink it?

Not under eighteen; it is not recommended at that age. Bring her in to our doctor instead.

Can I drink it in pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

Use should be avoided in pregnancy and is not recommended while breastfeeding. Ask our pharmacist and we will give you something suitable.

I take a water tablet for blood pressure. Is that a problem?

Worth checking with us first. Juniper and parsley are both traditional water-shifting herbs, so you could be pushing the same effect twice.

Will it stop my infections coming back?

No claim for any of these herbs is authorised, so we make no promise of that kind. If infections keep returning, please see our doctor rather than buying a second box, because recurring infections have causes that can be found and treated.

Can I drink it with an antibiotic?

Please ask our pharmacist, who will look at the specific antibiotic with you.
