What Cascara Sagrada Is For, and the Limits That Come With It

Cascara is a stimulant laxative. It works by prompting the bowel wall to contract rather than by softening what is in there, which is why it acts overnight and why it is meant for a few days rather than a few months. One Week. Not Longer, and Not Every Night

Taken for longer than a brief course, stimulant laxatives can impair how the bowel works on its own and lead to dependence on laxatives to open it at all. That is the real risk here and it creeps up quietly: a few weeks in, the dose that worked no longer does, and the bowel has become slower rather than faster. Who Should Not Take Cascara Sagrada At All
This one has real contraindications and we would rather you heard them from us than found them later. Cascara is contraindicated in pregnancy and in breastfeeding, and in children under twelve.
It is also contraindicated with a blockage or narrowing of the bowel, a bowel that has stopped moving, appendicitis, inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, abdominal pain whose cause is unknown, and severe dehydration with salt loss. Hard stool that has become impacted is another: a stimulant pushing against a blockage is the wrong answer and sometimes a dangerous one. If you have pain, nausea and vomiting alongside constipation, that combination can signal an obstruction, and it needs seeing today rather than treating from a shelf.
Potassium, and the Tea on Our Own Shelf
Stimulant laxatives of this family can drain potassium when they are used heavily or for too long, and low potassium matters most for the heart. Taken alongside water tablets, steroid medicines or liquorice root, the potassium loss adds up faster.
That last one is worth naming plainly, because liquorice is in two of our own herbal teas. And anyone taking a heart-rhythm medicine, a digoxin-type medicine, a water tablet or steroids should speak to our doctor before starting cascara, because potassium is monitored for a reason, and that matters more with age.
What We Are Permitted to Tell You
No health claim for cascara is authorised, as with every botanical. What we can give you is the regulatory history, which is unusually relevant on this product and which we would rather set out than skip.
In November 2002 the American regulator ruled that cascara sagrada, as a stimulant laxative ingredient in over-the-counter medicines, was not generally recognised as safe and effective, citing inadequate toxicity data, and gave manufacturers 180 days to take it out of general use. European authorities attempted restrictions on this family of botanicals in 2021, and an EU court annulled significant parts of that regulation in November 2024, so the European position is unsettled rather than settled either way. Cascara remains lawfully sold here. We think you should know all of that before you choose it, and that a bulk-forming fibre such as Fybogel or an osmotic such as Movicol is the sensible first choice for most people.
How to Take It, If You and Our Pharmacist Decide It Suits You
One dose at night, at the smallest amount that works, on two or three nights inside a single week. Drink plenty of water through the day while you are taking it.

Has any regulator taken a position on cascara?
Yes, and it is worth knowing. In November 2002 the American regulator ruled that cascara sagrada as an over-the-counter stimulant laxative ingredient was not generally recognised as safe and effective, citing inadequate toxicity data, and gave 180 days for its removal from general use. European restrictions attempted in 2021 were partly annulled by an EU court in November 2024, so that position is unsettled.
Is it good for a colon cleanse or for losing weight?
