Foralin 200 Inhaler: Two Medicines, One Device

The Foralin 200 inhaler helps you get asthma under control with one inhaler instead of two, because it carries a preventer and a long-acting airway opener together in the same device. Each dose delivers budesonide 200 mcg and formoterol 6 mcg as measured in the canister, which reaches you as 160 mcg and 4.5 mcg at the mouthpiece, and there are 120 doses in the inhaler. It is a prescription medicine, so please send us your prescription or our doctor can see you and issue one.

The two parts do different jobs and need each other. The budesonide is a steroid that calms the inflammation making your airways twitchy, working over days and weeks. The formoterol relaxes the muscle around the airway and keeps it relaxed for hours. Taken together they hold the airway open and treat the reason it was closing, which is why a combination inhaler suits people whose asthma a preventer alone has not settled.

How the Foralin 200 Inhaler Is Taken

There are two quite different ways our doctor may prescribe this, and knowing which one you are on matters. Some people take it on a fixed schedule twice a day and keep a separate reliever for symptoms. Others take it twice a day and also use the same inhaler for symptoms when they arise, so one device does everything.

Your prescription will say which, and please ask our pharmacist to write it on the inhaler if there is any doubt. Whichever it is, there are ceilings worth knowing by heart: never take more than 6 inhalations on any single occasion, and if you find yourself needing more than 8 inhalations in a day, that is the point to contact us rather than to carry on. Needing more than usual is the asthma telling you something, and the answer is a review rather than extra doses.

Please Do Not Start It During an Attack

This inhaler is for treatment of asthma that is settled enough to be managed, not for starting in the middle of a flare-up. If your breathing is deteriorating now, that needs assessment and probably a different kind of treatment first.

Sudden or progressive worsening of asthma is potentially life threatening. Get emergency help if the reliever brings no improvement, if relief wears off within a couple of hours, if speaking in full sentences has become impossible, if you are too breathless to walk or eat, if your lips or fingers look blue, or if you feel exhausted or agitated. While help comes, sit upright and take one puff of a rapid-acting reliever every thirty to sixty seconds, up to ten puffs. And in the uncommon event that your breathing gets worse immediately after a dose rather than better, stop using this inhaler, use a rapid-acting reliever and contact us the same day.

Rinse, and Keep Taking It When You Feel Well

Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and spit it out after each maintenance dose. The steroid that lands in the mouth rather than the lungs causes oral thrush, which shows as white patches or soreness, and a hoarse voice, and rinsing is what prevents both.

And please keep taking your maintenance doses on the days you have no symptoms at all, which is the single hardest instruction in asthma care to follow and the most important. The symptom-free week is the inhaler working. Please also never stop it abruptly: our doctor will taper the dose down when your control allows, and stopping a combination inhaler suddenly can bring the asthma back sharply.

Using It So the Medicine Reaches the Airways

Cap off, mouthpiece checked and clear, shake the inhaler. Breathe out gently, away from the inhaler, as far as is comfortable. Seal your lips around the mouthpiece, start to breathe in slowly, press the canister once as you begin breathing in, and keep breathing in slowly and deeply.

Hold your breath for about ten seconds, or as long as is comfortable, then breathe out gently. Wait about thirty seconds and shake again before a second dose, then rinse and spit. Prime a new inhaler, and one unused for a while, with a test puff into the air away from your face, and wipe the plastic actuator and mouthpiece weekly. With 120 doses, two inhalations twice daily is thirty days exactly, so this is a calendar-month inhaler and worth putting on a standing monthly order. Please ask our pharmacist about a spacer and let us watch you use it once.

Who It Is For, and Who Needs a Different Version

It is used in asthma from 12 years of age, and in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease from 18 years. For children aged 6 to 11 a lower strength of the same combination exists, so please talk to our doctor rather than giving a child from this inhaler, and the symptom-driven way of using it is not for children at all.

The powder contains lactose, which carries small amounts of milk protein, so please tell our doctor if you have a milk allergy. Tell him also about heart disease or an irregular heartbeat, an overactive thyroid, diabetes, low potassium, or any heart-rhythm condition, and about every other medicine you take. Some antifungal and antiviral medicines, itraconazole and ritonavir among them, interact strongly with this one, and beta-blockers including eye drops for glaucoma work against it.

Please Tell Our Doctor About These Too

Let our doctor know about any current chest infection and about tuberculosis, past or present, since the steroid part needs careful thought in that situation. Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, because asthma is treated in pregnancy rather than left alone and poor control is the greater risk to a baby.

Come and see us for white patches or soreness in the mouth, a voice that stays hoarse, palpitations, a tremor that persists, muscle cramps, or new fever and worsening chest symptoms. In COPD, please also report any chest infection promptly. And bring the inhaler with you to every review, because how much of it you are using is the measurement our doctor needs most.

What We Can Honestly Tell You

Carrying one inhaler instead of two is a real advantage, and for a good many people this combination is what finally makes asthma unremarkable. We will keep you supplied on a standing monthly order, which the 120 doses fit neatly, and our pharmacist will confirm which regimen you are on and write it on the device.

If your prescription has you on this plus a separate reliever, that reliever is Asthalin and you should always have one. If our doctor steps you down to a preventer alone, that is Budecort 200 or Budecort 100. Please ask about a spacer and a peak flow meter at the same time.

Is This Combination Inhaler Right for You?

Please talk to our pharmacist or our doctor before you buy if any of these apply.

  • You have no prescription yet. Send us one, or our doctor can see you and issue it. We dispense no prescription medicine without one.
  • Your breathing is deteriorating right now. This inhaler is not for starting during a flare-up. Please be seen first.
  • You are unsure whether you take it on a schedule only, or also for symptoms. Bring the prescription in and we will write the answer on the inhaler.
  • You need more than 8 inhalations in a day, or more than 6 on one occasion. Contact us. That is a review rather than extra doses.
  • A child under 12, or a milk allergy, heart or rhythm condition, overactive thyroid, diabetes or low potassium. Tell our doctor before you start. A lower strength exists for children 6 to 11.
  • Breathing that worsens immediately after a dose; or an attack where the reliever brings no improvement. Stop, use a rapid-acting reliever, and get help the same day.

Your Questions About the Foralin 200 Inhaler, Answered

Do I need a prescription for it?

Yes. Send us your prescription, or our doctor can see you and issue one. We dispense no prescription medicine without a prescription.

What is in it?

Two medicines: budesonide 200 mcg, a steroid preventer, and formoterol 6 mcg, a long-acting airway opener. At the mouthpiece that reaches you as 160 mcg and 4.5 mcg.

How many doses are in the inhaler?

120. At two inhalations twice daily that is exactly thirty days, so it fits a standing monthly order.

Is it a preventer or a reliever?

Both, in one device. Our doctor may prescribe it on a fixed schedule with a separate reliever, or on a schedule plus extra puffs when symptoms arise.

How do I know which way I am meant to take it?

Your prescription says. Bring it in and our pharmacist will write the answer on the inhaler so there is no doubt.

Is there a maximum?

Never more than 6 inhalations on one occasion. If you need more than 8 in a day, contact us rather than carrying on.

Can I start it during an asthma flare-up?

Please do not. It is for asthma settled enough to be managed. Deteriorating breathing needs assessment first.

Why rinse my mouth?

The steroid that lands in the mouth rather than the lungs causes thrush and a hoarse voice. Rinse thoroughly and spit out after each maintenance dose.

Can I stop it when I feel well?

The symptom-free week is the inhaler working. Never stop it abruptly; our doctor will taper the dose when your control allows.

Can a child use it?

It contains lactose. Does that matter?

The lactose carries small amounts of milk protein, so please tell our doctor if you have a milk allergy.

Are there medicines it clashes with?

Yes. Some antifungals and antivirals, itraconazole and ritonavir among them, interact strongly, and beta-blockers including glaucoma eye drops work against it. Tell us everything you take.

What if my breathing gets worse straight after a dose?

Stop using it, use a rapid-acting reliever and contact us the same day. It is uncommon but it needs reporting.
