Budecort Inhaler 100

The Budecort 100 inhaler helps you stop having asthma symptoms in the first place, rather than treating them once they arrive, by calming the inflammation in the airway lining that makes airways twitchy and quick to close. It contains budesonide 100 mcg and is taken every day whether you feel well or not. It does almost nothing during an attack, so you still need a reliever. It is a prescription medicine, so please send us your prescription or ask to see our doctor.

Budecort 100 Inhaler: the One You Take When You Feel Fine

The Budecort 100 inhaler helps you stop having asthma symptoms in the first place, rather than treating them once they arrive, by calming the inflammation in the airway lining that makes the airways twitchy and quick to close. It contains budesonide 100 mcg, an inhaled steroid, and it is taken every day on a schedule whether you feel well or not. It is a prescription medicine, so please send us your prescription, or our doctor can see you and issue one.

That last point is the one people find hardest. A preventer gives you nothing you can feel at the moment you use it, so the temptation to skip it on a good week is strong. The good week is the preventer working. Stopping it because the asthma has gone quiet is the commonest reason the asthma comes back, usually about two weeks later and usually at night.

Please Do Not Reach for This One in an Attack

A steroid preventer takes days to change anything. During an attack it does almost nothing useful, and the minutes spent on it are minutes not spent on the reliever that would have opened the airway.

So keep the two inhalers clearly apart in your mind and in the house. The reliever is for symptoms now. This one is for every day. Bring both inhalers in to our pharmacist and we will write the job on each in marker pen, which takes two minutes and has saved more trouble than any other thing we do at the counter. And please make sure everybody in the household knows which is which, including whoever would help a child or an older relative in the middle of the night.

How Long Before the Budecort 100 Inhaler Works

Expect some improvement within about a week or two, and the full benefit over several weeks of steady use. Nothing happens in the first few days, which is exactly why so many people abandon it.

So judge it on the right measurement: how often you have needed the reliever, how often you have woken at night, and whether you can do what you want to do without stopping for breath. Those are the numbers our doctor will ask for, and they are worth noting in a diary for the first month. Where there is no improvement at all after a month of taking it properly every day, please come back rather than simply continuing, because either the dose, the technique or the diagnosis needs another look.

Rinse Your Mouth, Every Single Time

After each dose, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water and spit it out. The part of the dose that lands in the mouth and throat rather than the lungs is what causes the two common side effects of an inhaled steroid.

Those are oral thrush, which shows as white patches or soreness in the mouth, and a hoarse or weakened voice. Both are avoidable with rinsing and both are treatable, so please come and see us if either appears rather than stopping the inhaler, since there are things we can do about it. Using a spacer helps on both counts because it keeps more of the dose out of the mouth and more of it in the chest, and a spacer is the right answer for every child and for anybody who has never had their technique watched. Ask our pharmacist about one.

Using It So the Medicine Reaches the Airways

Take the cap off and check the mouthpiece is clear. Shake the inhaler. Breathe out gently, away from the inhaler, as far as is comfortable. Seal your lips around the mouthpiece, start to breathe in slowly, and press the canister once as you begin breathing in, continuing to breathe in slowly and deeply.

Hold your breath for about ten seconds, or as long as is comfortable, then breathe out gently. Wait about thirty seconds and shake again before a second dose. Rinse and spit afterwards. Prime a new inhaler, and one that has gone unused for a while, with a test puff into the air away from your face, and wipe the plastic actuator and mouthpiece once a week with a dry tissue. Please let our pharmacist watch you do all of this once, because most people get only a fraction of the dose into the chest and nobody has ever told them.

Children, and What to Keep an Eye On

Inhaled steroids are used in children because uncontrolled asthma does far more harm than the treatment does, and the dose is kept at the lowest that holds the asthma steady. A child on one should use a spacer, and a younger child a spacer with a mask.

Our doctor will want to measure your child’s height at intervals, which is routine rather than a cause for alarm, and will review the dose regularly with a view to reducing it when the asthma allows. Please rinse a child’s mouth after every dose, or give a drink of water and have them spit, and brush teeth afterwards where you can. Bring the child and the inhaler to our pharmacist so we can fit the right spacer and show both of you how to use it.

Please Tell Our Doctor About These

Let our doctor know about any current chest infection or tuberculosis, past or present, since an inhaled steroid needs thinking about carefully in that situation, and about diabetes, glaucoma, cataracts or liver problems. Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, because asthma is treated in pregnancy rather than left alone and poorly controlled asthma is the greater risk to a baby.

Come and see us for white patches or soreness in the mouth, a voice that stays hoarse, a cough that starts straight after each dose, or any new fever or worsening chest symptoms. And please do not stop this inhaler on your own, even if you feel entirely well, because stopping a preventer abruptly is how a settled asthma becomes an attack. Our doctor will step the dose down when the control allows it.

What We Can Honestly Tell You

This is the inhaler that changes how much asthma you have, and the whole of its value depends on taking it on the days you feel fine. We will keep you supplied on a standing monthly order so there is never a gap, and our pharmacist will check your technique and label your inhalers whenever you come in.

You still need a reliever alongside it, which is Asthalin, and please ask about a spacer and a peak flow meter. Where our doctor steps you up, the next strength is Budecort 200, and where a single inhaler doing both jobs would suit you better, ask about Foralin 200.

Is This Preventer Inhaler Right for You?

Please talk to our pharmacist or our doctor before you buy if any of these apply.

  • You have no prescription yet. Send us one, or our doctor can see you and issue it. We dispense no prescription medicine without one.
  • You were planning to use this for sudden symptoms. Please do not. It does almost nothing in an attack. The reliever is the one for that.
  • You feel well and were thinking of stopping. The good week is this inhaler working. Please let our doctor step the dose down rather than stopping it yourself.
  • White patches or soreness in the mouth, or a voice that stays hoarse. Come and see us. Both are treatable and rinsing prevents them.
  • A chest infection now, or tuberculosis past or present; diabetes, glaucoma or cataracts; pregnancy or breastfeeding. Tell our doctor before you start.
  • No improvement at all after a month of taking it properly every day. Please come back, because the dose, the technique or the diagnosis needs another look.

Your Questions About the Budecort 100 Inhaler, Answered

Do I need a prescription for it?

Yes. Send us your prescription, or our doctor can see you and issue one. We dispense no prescription medicine without a prescription.

Is this a reliever or a preventer?

A preventer. It calms the inflammation that makes airways twitchy, and it is taken every day on a schedule whether you feel well or not.

Can I use it during an asthma attack?

Please do not. A steroid preventer takes days to work and does almost nothing in an attack. Use your reliever and get help if it is not working.

Why take it when I feel fine?

Because the good week is the preventer working. Stopping it when the asthma goes quiet is the commonest reason the asthma comes back, usually about two weeks later.

How long before I notice anything?

Some improvement within a week or two, and the full benefit over several weeks. Nothing happens in the first few days, which is why people abandon it.

How do I judge whether it is working?

By how often you need the reliever, how often you wake at night, and whether you can do what you want without stopping for breath. Note those for the first month.

Why must I rinse my mouth?

The part of the dose that lands in the mouth rather than the lungs causes oral thrush and a hoarse voice. Rinse thoroughly and spit it out after every dose.

I have white patches in my mouth. What now?

Come and see us rather than stopping the inhaler. Thrush is treatable, and rinsing plus a spacer prevents it coming back.

Should I use a spacer?

Most people benefit. It keeps more of the dose out of the mouth and more of it in the chest. It is the right answer for every child and anyone elderly.

Can children use it?

Yes, at the lowest dose that holds the asthma steady, because uncontrolled asthma does far more harm than the treatment. A child should use a spacer, and a younger child a spacer with a mask.

Will it affect my child’s growth?

Our doctor will measure height at intervals as a routine precaution and review the dose with a view to reducing it when the asthma allows.

Can I stop it once my asthma settles?

Please let our doctor step the dose down rather than stopping on your own. Stopping a preventer abruptly is how settled asthma becomes an attack.

Is it safe in pregnancy?

Asthma is treated in pregnancy rather than left alone, and poorly controlled asthma is the greater risk to a baby. Tell our doctor you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
