BLUELAB 100% WHEY PROTEIN

Bluelab 100% Whey Protein helps you build and hold on to the muscle you are training for, because protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass, to the maintenance of muscle mass and to the maintenance of normal bones. This USN whey protein gives 26 g in a 34 g scoop from a blend of isolate, concentrate and hydrolysate, with under 2 g of sugar and 5,800 mg of branched-chain amino acids. It also carries an added lactase enzyme, so if whey normally upsets your stomach, ask our pharmacist about this one.

Description

Bluelab 100% Whey Protein helps you build and keep the muscle you are training for, which is the whole job of a whey protein. It is USN’s premium whey protein — a blend of whey concentrate, whey isolate and whey hydrolysate rather than one form on its own — and it gives 26 g of protein in a single 34 g scoop, with under 2 g of sugar and 5,800 mg of branched-chain amino acids in the same scoop, and an added lactase enzyme that makes it easier on the stomach than most whey.

What This Whey Protein Does for Your Muscles, and Your Bones

Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass. Protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass. Protein contributes to the maintenance of normal bones. Those three are the established benefits of protein, and at 26 g of it in a 34 g scoop this one clears the requirement several times over, because roughly three quarters of what you are drinking is protein and very little else.

The bone one is worth a moment because almost nobody selling whey mentions it. If you are over 40, or a woman approaching or past menopause, protein protects your skeleton as much as your arms, which is a reason to have a shake on the days you do not train at all.

What a whey protein is for is reaching the protein you need across a day when food alone is not getting you there. It works alongside your training and your meals rather than in place of them, and that is a worthwhile thing for it to be.

Three Kinds of Whey in One Scoop, and What Each Is For

Concentrate is the ordinary form, the most affordable, and the one that carries a little lactose and fat with it. Isolate has most of the lactose and fat filtered out, so it is leaner and lighter on the stomach. Hydrolysate has already been broken into shorter chains, which is why it absorbs fastest.

Blending the three gives you something that starts working quickly and keeps going, rather than one that does one of those things well and the other badly. It is also why this costs more than a plain concentrate, and now you know what the difference is buying you.

Why Whey Protein Upsets Some Stomachs, and Why This One Is Easier

Many adults in this part of the world lose the ability to digest lactose after childhood, which is why a whey shake leaves so many people bloated, windy or running for the toilet. It is the lactose, not the protein.

This blend includes an added lactase enzyme, which breaks the small amount of lactose in it down into simpler sugars before it can cause trouble. Combined with the isolate, which has most of the lactose filtered out already, it makes this one of the easier whey proteins to handle if milk normally disagrees with you.

That is about comfort, not allergy, and the two are completely different. Whey comes from milk. If you have a diagnosed milk allergy, the kind where a reaction means antihistamines or an adrenaline pen, this is not for you at any dose and an added enzyme makes no difference to that. Come and talk to our pharmacist and we will put you on our plant protein from pea, rice and pumpkin seed instead, which contains no milk at all.

How to Mix Whey Protein for a Smooth Shake

One scoop, 34 g, in 200 to 400 ml of cold water. Use less water for a thicker shake and more for a lighter one. USN’s own method is worth copying: shake for 30 seconds, let it stand for a minute, then shake again. The minute lets the foam settle and the powder finish wetting, and it is the difference between a smooth shake and lumps at the bottom.

Cold water, not warm. Warm water makes whey clump instantly. Milk works too and makes it richer, though it adds back the lactose you may be trying to avoid.

One to two scoops a day covers most people training a few times a week, taken after training or at any point in the day where protein is short. Come and tell our pharmacist your weight and what your week looks like and we will work out how much you actually need, which is often less than the internet tells you.

What Is Actually in a Scoop

26 g of protein, under 2 g of sugar, and 5,800 mg of branched-chain amino acids — leucine, isoleucine and valine, the three the muscle-building research centres on. The protein comes from whey concentrate, whey isolate and whey hydrolysate, with an added lactase enzyme and flavouring.

Please ask us for the carton before you leave, or ask us to photograph the panel and send it to you, if you want the full ingredient list for any particular flavour. Flavours differ in what else is added and we would rather you read it than take our word for it.

Which Flavour, and Which Size

USN makes this whey in more than a dozen flavours and three tub sizes. We do not hold all of them at once, so tell us which flavour you want and how many weeks you want covered, and we will tell you what is on the shelf and what we can bring in.

If this is your first tub, chocolate and vanilla are the two that reliably taste right in plain water and the two that go into porridge, coffee or a smoothie without fighting it. The fruit and dessert flavours are better once you know you like whey.

Is This Whey Protein Right for You?

It suits anyone training who wants a straightforward way to get more protein, anyone who has struggled with other whey proteins because of their stomach, and anyone over 40 wanting to protect muscle and bone. It is a well-made blend rather than a plain concentrate, and the lactase is a real advantage.

Please speak to us first if any of these describes you:

  • You have a diagnosed milk allergy. This is a dairy product, and the lactase enzyme changes nothing about that.
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding. Please see our doctor before using it.
  • You are buying it for a child or teenager. Please see our doctor first.
  • You have kidney disease, or you have been told to watch your protein. Bring your last results to the counter.
  • You are vegetarian or vegan. Whey is made from milk, so ask us for the plant protein instead.

And if you are not sure you need a protein powder at all, ask our pharmacist. Many people already eat enough protein and would do better spending the money on food, and we will tell you so rather than sell you a tub.

Bluelab 100% Whey Protein: Your Questions Answered

What is Bluelab 100% Whey Protein made of?

Three forms of whey protein in one blend — concentrate, isolate and hydrolysate — plus an added lactase enzyme and flavouring. It is USN’s premium whey, giving 26 g of protein in a 34 g scoop.

How much protein is in a scoop?

26 g of protein in a 34 g scoop, with under 2 g of sugar and 5,800 mg of branched-chain amino acids. That makes the powder roughly three quarters protein by weight.

What does whey protein actually do?

Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass, to the maintenance of muscle mass and to the maintenance of normal bones. A shake is a convenient way to reach the protein you need in a day; it does not replace training or meals.

Why are there three types of whey in it?

Concentrate is the ordinary form and carries a little lactose and fat. Isolate has most of that filtered out, so it is leaner and lighter on the stomach. Hydrolysate is already broken into shorter chains and absorbs fastest. The blend starts working quickly and keeps going.

Whey protein usually upsets my stomach. Will this one?

It is the lactose that causes that, not the protein, and many adults here stop digesting lactose after childhood. This blend has an added lactase enzyme that breaks the lactose down, and the isolate in it has most of the lactose filtered out already, so it is one of the easier whey proteins to handle. Ask our pharmacist and we will talk it through with you.

I have a milk allergy. Can I take it?

No. Whey comes from milk, and an enzyme for lactose makes no difference to an allergy. If your reaction needs antihistamines or an adrenaline pen, please come and see our pharmacist and we will put you on a plant protein instead.

How do I mix it?

One scoop, 34 g, in 200 to 400 ml of cold water. Shake for 30 seconds, let it stand for a minute, then shake again — that minute is what stops the lumps. Use cold water rather than warm, which makes whey clump.

When should I take it?

After training is the usual time, and any point in the day where your protein is short works just as well. One to two scoops a day suits most people training a few times a week.

Will it help me lose weight?

We are not able to tell you that. What protein is established for is growing and maintaining muscle and maintaining normal bones, and keeping your muscle while you are eating less is a sensible reason to use it. Our doctor can go through a plan with you, which is worth more than a shake on its own.

Which flavour should I buy?

Chocolate and vanilla are the two that taste right in plain water and the two that go into porridge, coffee or a smoothie without fighting it. Tell us which you want and we will tell you what is on the shelf.

Is it safe to take every day?

For most adults a scoop or two a day alongside food is ordinary. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, buying it for someone under 18, or you have kidney disease or have been told to watch your protein, please talk to our doctor first.

Can I take it with creatine?

Yes, and the two do different jobs, so plenty of people take both. Our pure creatine monohydrate is the product in this category with an authorised performance claim behind it at 3 g a day. Tell our pharmacist what you are training for and we will set out a simple order.

Is whey protein better than plant protein?

For most people it comes down to your stomach and your diet rather than the protein itself. Whey is the easier one to mix and the cheaper one per gram of protein; a plant blend is the one to take if you avoid dairy. Our pharmacist will tell you which of the two we would put you on.
