Lactulac Liquid 200Ml

Lactulac Liquid gives you lactulose, the gentle liquid people take for constipation when they want something that can be used for weeks rather than days, measured by the spoon into water, juice or milk. It draws water into the bowel and softens the stool rather than stimulating it, so there is no five-day limit. Adults take 15 to 30 ml daily and it takes 24 to 48 hours to work. Please ask our pharmacist to set the amount for a child or a baby.

What Lactulac’s Lactulose Liquid Is For

Lactulac Liquid gives you lactulose, the gentle liquid people take for constipation when they want something that can be used for weeks rather than days, measured by the spoon into water, juice or milk. Two hundred millilitres to the bottle.

Lactulose works by drawing water into the bowel rather than by prodding it. It is a sugar the body leaves unabsorbed, so it travels to the large bowel intact, pulls water in alongside it, and softens the stool from the inside. Nothing is being stimulated, which is why it carries no five-day limit and why it is the one we reach for when constipation has been going on a while.

Gentle Enough for the Youngest and for Pregnancy

This is the form that suits the people the rest of this shelf excludes. It is taken by the spoon, which makes it workable for a small child who could never manage granules in a glass, and for an older person who struggles with tablets.

It is also the sensible choice in pregnancy, where the stimulant laxatives here are either restricted or contraindicated outright. Please tell us if you are pregnant or buying for a baby and our pharmacist will set the amount with you, because the amounts for the very young are small and specific and worth getting right rather than estimating from an adult dose.

How Much, and How Long It Takes

Adults take 15 to 30 ml daily, which can be taken as a single morning dose. Children of six to twelve take 20 ml, one to five years 10 ml, and under a year 5 ml, and for a baby that amount should come from our doctor rather than from a page.

Give it a day or two before you judge it. Lactulose takes 24 to 48 hours to work, which surprises people who expect an overnight result, and taking more on the second morning because nothing happened on the first is the commonest mistake with it. Take it with plenty of water through the day, and keep to the same time each day so your bowel settles into a rhythm.

The First Week, Honestly

Wind, bloating and some cramping in the first few days are the usual experience and they settle as the bowel adjusts. Starting at the lower end of the range and building up over a few days makes that much easier.

If the wind is unbearable rather than merely annoying, come and talk to us instead of stopping altogether, because a smaller amount taken steadily often works better than a larger amount abandoned. Too much lactulose produces loose stool and cramping, so the aim is the smallest amount that keeps you comfortable rather than the biggest you can tolerate.

Who Should Not Take It

Lactulose is contraindicated in galactosaemia, a rare inherited condition in which the body lacks the enzyme for galactose, and that one is absolute. It is also contraindicated with a bowel blockage and with an acute abdomen, meaning severe sudden abdominal pain of the kind that needs a hospital rather than a pharmacy.

Anyone with diabetes should take it with care and ideally with our pharmacist’s advice, because lactulose is a sugar even though very little of it is absorbed. Prolonged use belongs under medical supervision, which is easy here: our doctor is at the pharmacy, and if you have been taking a laxative for months that is a conversation worth having anyway.

The Liver Use, and Why It Is Our Doctor’s Decision

Lactulose has a second and quite different use, in a liver condition where the amounts are several times the constipation dose and the treatment is monitored. Please do not attempt that from a shelf.

If that is why you are here, come and see our doctor and bring any letters or results you have. The dose, the frequency and the target are all set by the clinical picture and adjusted over time, and it needs a prescriber watching it. We will dispense it and support you through it, but the plan comes from our doctor.

What Else Is on This Shelf

For a bulk-forming fibre you can take for months, Fybogel adds softness through bulk and also suits pregnancy. For something stronger that still works by drawing in water, Movicol sachets are the next step up and can be increased further under our doctor’s direction.

If what you want is an overnight result for a one-off, that is a different job and the stimulant tablets do it, with the five-day limit that comes attached. Tell our pharmacist which of those three situations you are in and the choice takes a minute.

Is Lactulose Right for You?

Please talk to our pharmacist or our doctor before you start if any of these apply to you.

  • Galactosaemia. Lactulose is contraindicated, without exception. Ask us for an alternative and we will find you one.
  • Severe sudden abdominal pain, or a suspected bowel blockage. Please go and be seen today rather than taking anything. Both are contraindications.
  • Diabetes. Please speak to our pharmacist first and mention it at your next clinic visit.
  • A baby or a child under five. The amounts are small and specific, so let our doctor set them rather than working down from an adult dose.
  • A liver condition, or if someone has told you to take lactulose for one. That use needs our doctor and monitoring.
  • Blood in the stool, weight you did not mean to lose, or a bowel habit that has changed and stayed changed. See our doctor before any laxative, particularly after fifty or with bowel cancer in the family.

Lactulac Liquid: Your Questions Answered

What is in Lactulac Liquid?

Lactulose, in a 200 ml bottle of liquid taken by the spoon. It is an osmotic laxative, so it draws water into the bowel and softens the stool rather than stimulating it.

How much should I take?

Adults take 15 to 30 ml daily, which can be a single morning dose. Start at the lower end and build up over a few days.

How long does it take to work?

24 to 48 hours. That catches people out, so please give it two days before deciding it has not worked, and resist taking extra on the second morning.

How much can a child have?

Children of six to twelve take 20 ml, one to five years 10 ml, and under a year 5 ml. For a baby, please let our doctor set the amount rather than working it out from an adult dose.

Can I take it in pregnancy?

It is the sensible choice in pregnancy on this shelf, where the stimulant laxatives are either restricted or contraindicated. Please tell us you are pregnant when you buy so our pharmacist can set it up with you.

Can I take it for a long time?

Yes, and that is one of its advantages: there is no five-day limit and no dependence risk. Prolonged use does belong under medical supervision, and our doctor is at the pharmacy for that.

Will it give me wind?

Wind, bloating and some cramping are common in the first few days and settle as the bowel adjusts. Starting low and building up slowly makes it much easier.

What if I take too much?

Loose stool and cramping. The aim is the smallest amount that keeps you comfortable rather than the largest you can tolerate, so come back to us and we will adjust it.

I have diabetes. Can I take it?

Please speak to our pharmacist first. Lactulose is a sugar, even though very little of it is absorbed, and it is worth mentioning at your next clinic visit.

Who should not take it?

Anyone with galactosaemia, which is absolute, and anyone with a bowel blockage or severe sudden abdominal pain. Those last two need seeing today.

Can I mix it with juice or milk?

Yes. Water, juice or milk all work, and mixing it makes the sweetness easier to take. Follow it with more water.

I was told to take lactulose for a liver problem. Is this the same thing?

It is the same medicine, but that use involves far larger amounts and needs monitoring. Please come and see our doctor with any letters or results you have, and we will dispense and support the plan our doctor sets.

When should I see a doctor rather than buy a laxative?

Blood in your stool, weight you did not mean to lose, a bowel habit that has changed and stayed changed, new constipation after fifty, or bowel cancer in the family.
