What This Milk Thistle Tea Is For, and Why the Liquorice Matters

Nutra Liver Tea is the milk thistle tea people reach for when they want to look after a liver that has had a hard few years, two to three cups a day. Milk thistle is 30% of the blend and liquorice root is another 30%, with peppermint, fennel and turmeric alongside them, which makes this one of the two highest-liquorice products on our shelves and the reason the next section exists.

Milk thistle is a gentle, well-liked herb with a long traditional use for digestive complaints, and there is no argument with it. Liquorice at 30% taken every day is a different matter, and the published position on it is specific enough to change who should be drinking this tea at all. Please read the next two sections before you buy, and bring your medicine list with you when you come in, because liquorice interacts with more medicines than most people expect.

Liquorice Is Not Recommended in Liver Disorders

Please read that twice, because it is the awkward fact about this product. The published monograph for liquorice root says it is not recommended for people with hypertension, or with kidney, liver or cardiovascular disorders, or with low potassium, because those groups are more sensitive to its effects.

So a tea sold for liver support contains 30% of a herb that people with liver trouble are told to leave alone. If you have been told you have a liver problem of any kind, come and talk to our pharmacist before you drink this, and we will give you something more appropriate. If your liver is fine and you simply want to look after it, the position is different and the tea is reasonable, within the limits below.

The Liquorice Rules, in Full

Liquorice has one compound, glycyrrhizin, that causes all the trouble when it is taken day after day. Beyond the body’s ability to compensate it produces water retention, a fall in potassium and a rise in blood pressure. The reference upper limit for regular daily intake is 100 milligrams, and the rules below are the practical guide to staying well inside it.

  • Four weeks at most. Traditional use for digestive symptoms runs to four weeks, with a review at two if symptoms are still there.
  • Not under eighteen. Safety has not been established in children and adolescents.
  • Not in pregnancy, and not if you could become pregnant without contraception. Animal studies show reproductive toxicity and the human data are limited.
  • Not while breastfeeding. Glycyrrhizin has been detected in the breast milk of some women and the effect on the infant is unknown.
  • Not alongside another liquorice product. The monograph is explicit, and we stock seven of them.
  • Not with diuretics, cardiac glycosides, corticosteroids or stimulant laxatives, all of which push potassium the same way. It may also work against blood pressure medicines.

One Interaction Worth Naming Separately

Liquorice induces a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which the body uses to clear a long list of medicines. One of them is omeprazole, which thousands of people here take for reflux and ulcers, and lower levels mean less effect.

That is a real combination rather than a theoretical one: somebody drinking a liquorice tea for their stomach while taking omeprazole for the same stomach may be undoing part of the tablet. Bring your medicine list to our pharmacist and we will go through it in five minutes. If reflux is what you are treating, ask us about deglycyrrhizinated liquorice capsules instead, which have the responsible compound removed and carry none of this list.

Where Milk Thistle’s Reputation Comes From

Milk thistle is traditionally used for dyspeptic complaints, and the research people have read about concerns a standardised silymarin extract in capsules rather than a teabag at 30% of a blend. So expect less of a cup than of the studies, and treat the tea as a pleasant daily habit rather than a treatment. If a sluggish, heavy digestion after meals is the real complaint, ask our pharmacist about our reflux tea, and remember it carries liquorice too, so the four-week limit travels with it.

It also comes from the daisy family, so if ragweed, chamomile or chrysanthemum sets off your hay fever, mention it to us. And one honest limit, since the word turns up on every liver product: a tea leaves the cause of liver damage exactly where it was. If a liver is being damaged by hepatitis, by alcohol, by a medicine or by fat, the useful thing is to find out which and deal with it, and a tea taken for months instead delays that.

Come and See Our Doctor Instead If Any of This Is True

Yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine with pale stools, swelling of the abdomen or ankles, bruising easily, confusion, vomiting blood, or months of unexplained exhaustion and weight loss all need a doctor rather than a herbal tea, and they need one soon.

And this matters here more than in most places: hepatitis B and hepatitis C are common in this region, they are found with a simple blood test, and hepatitis C in particular is now curable with a course of tablets. Our doctor can arrange the test. A person who drinks liver tea for a year with untreated hepatitis has lost a year, and we would far rather send you for the test.

What We Are Permitted to Tell You

No health claim for milk thistle or liquorice is authorised, and every botanical claim submitted in Europe remains on hold. So nobody may tell you a tea detoxifies, cleanses, protects or repairs a liver, and we hold back from saying it.

What we can give you is the proportions, the liquorice limits in full, the medicines it interacts with, the one interaction most likely to affect a real customer, the honest distance between a teabag and the research, and the symptoms that mean a blood test this week. Milk thistle tea is a decent daily habit for someone whose liver is healthy, and that is worth buying a box for.

Is This Milk Thistle Tea Right for You?

Please talk to our pharmacist or our doctor before you buy if any of these apply to you.

  • Any liver problem you have been told about. Liquorice is not recommended in liver disorders, and this tea is 30% liquorice. Ask us for an alternative.
  • High blood pressure, kidney or heart trouble, or low potassium. The same line in the monograph covers all of these.
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or anyone under eighteen. Liquorice is not recommended in any of those cases.
  • Omeprazole, a diuretic, a blood pressure medicine, a corticosteroid, a heart medicine or a stimulant laxative. Bring the list in. Five minutes at the counter.
  • Another liquorice product in the house. The monograph says not to combine them, and we stock seven.
  • Yellow eyes, dark urine, pale stools, swelling, easy bruising or unexplained exhaustion. Please see our doctor and ask for the hepatitis test rather than buying tea.

Nutra Liver Tea: Your Questions Answered

What is in this milk thistle tea?

Milk thistle at 30% and liquorice root at 30%, with peppermint, fennel and turmeric. Twenty bags to a box.

How many cups a day, and for how long?

Two to three cups a day, and four weeks at most because of the liquorice, with a review at two weeks if symptoms are still there.

I have been told I have a liver problem. Can I drink it?

Please speak to our pharmacist first. Liquorice is not recommended for people with liver disorders, and this tea is 30% liquorice. We will suggest something more appropriate.

Why is liquorice a problem at all?

One compound in it, glycyrrhizin, causes water retention, a fall in potassium and a rise in blood pressure when taken day after day. The reference upper limit for regular daily intake is 100 milligrams.

How much glycyrrhizin is in a cup?

Please ask our pharmacist, who will work it out with you against the 100 milligram reference limit and the four-week maximum.

Can I drink it with high blood pressure?

Not without speaking to us. Liquorice is not recommended in hypertension and may work against blood pressure medicines.

Can I drink it in pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

No. Liquorice is not recommended in pregnancy, including for anyone who could become pregnant and is not using contraception, nor while breastfeeding.

I take omeprazole. Does that matter?

It does, and it is worth five minutes with our pharmacist. Liquorice induces a liver enzyme that clears omeprazole, so levels fall and the tablet does less.

I already take a liquorice supplement. Can I have both?

No. The monograph says not to take other liquorice-containing products at the same time. Bring both in and we will sort out which one you need.

Will it repair my liver?

No claim of that kind is authorised, so we make no promise of the sort. If something is damaging a liver, finding out what and dealing with it is the useful step, and our doctor can start that this week.

When should I see a doctor instead?

Yellow eyes or skin, dark urine with pale stools, a swollen abdomen or ankles, easy bruising, confusion, vomiting blood, or months of unexplained exhaustion and weight loss. Those need a doctor soon.

Should I be tested for hepatitis?

Worth asking our doctor. Hepatitis B and C are common in this region, both are found with a simple blood test, and hepatitis C is now curable with a course of tablets.

Does milk thistle have the same strength as the capsules?

No. The research concerns a standardised silymarin extract in capsules, not a teabag at 30% of a blend, so treat the tea as a daily habit rather than a treatment.
