Bonium Tablets

Bonium tablets supply calcium citrate, vitamin D3, magnesium and zinc, four nutrients your bones need to stay strong, in one tablet a day. The calcium is in the citrate form, which your body takes up whether or not there is food in your stomach, and the vitamin D3 covers your full daily reference intake. Take one with a meal, and ask our pharmacist to add up your calcium across everything else you take.

Bonium Tablets, Four Bone Nutrients in One Daily Tablet

Bonium tablets supply calcium citrate, vitamin D3, magnesium and zinc, four nutrients your bones need to stay strong, in a single tablet taken once a day. It is a straightforward bone supplement, and the thinking behind it is easy to follow once you know what each part is doing.

Most calcium products stop at calcium and vitamin D. Bonium adds magnesium and zinc, and it uses calcium citrate rather than the cheaper carbonate. Those two decisions separate it from the row of similar-looking boxes on a pharmacy shelf, and both have good reasons behind them. Here is what is in it, what each nutrient is there to do, and how to get the most from a tablet a day.

Why the Calcium Is in Citrate Form

Calcium comes in several forms, and the two you meet most often are carbonate and citrate. Carbonate is cheaper and carries more calcium per milligram, which is why it fills most of the market. Citrate costs more and is the better-behaved of the two.

The difference comes down to acid. Calcium carbonate needs stomach acid to dissolve, so it has to be taken with food to work properly. Calcium citrate dissolves without it. A classic study published in the New England Journal of Medicine looked at people with achlorhydria, meaning little or no stomach acid, and found that absorption of calcium carbonate taken on an empty stomach fell away sharply, while calcium citrate was absorbed normally. A later meta-analysis comparing the two forms found citrate the more bioavailable of them overall.

For most people this is a convenience: take Bonium with a meal or between meals and it works either way. For some it matters more. Stomach acid falls naturally with age, and anyone on an acid-reducing medicine such as omeprazole is in the same position by design. If that describes you or the person you are buying for, the citrate form is worth paying a little more for. It is also the form generally reported to sit more easily with people who find calcium tablets bloating.

What the Vitamin D3 Does

Vitamin D is the nutrient that lets calcium in. Without enough of it, a good calcium intake still ends up underused, which is why the two are so often sold together. The authorised European wording is that vitamin D contributes to the normal absorption and utilisation of calcium and phosphorus, and to the maintenance of normal bones, teeth and muscle function.

Each Bonium tablet carries 200 IU of vitamin D3, which is the full daily reference intake used on European labels. D3 is cholecalciferol, the same form your skin makes in sunlight and the form that raises blood levels more reliably than D2.

Living on the equator helps less than people assume. Indoor work, covered clothing, darker skin pigmentation and sensible avoidance of the midday sun all cut how much the skin produces, and vitamin D insufficiency turns up in Kenyan surveys more often than expected. A daily reference intake is a sensible baseline for a healthy adult; if a blood test has shown your level to be low, you are in different territory and should be guided by what the result said.

The Magnesium and Zinc Most Bone Products Leave Out

Here is where Bonium does something the plain calcium-and-D products do not.

Magnesium contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and to normal muscle function, and it plays a part in the process that activates vitamin D in the body. Around half of the magnesium in your body sits in the skeleton, which makes its absence from most bone formulas a little odd. Each tablet supplies 100mg of elemental magnesium, from magnesium hydroxide.

Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal bones as well, and it has a second job: zinc is involved in normal protein synthesis, and bone is roughly a third protein by weight. Each tablet carries 4mg of elemental zinc.

Both are authorised European health claims, resting on evidence a regulator has already examined. A tablet covering all four nutrients also saves you buying three bottles.

What Is Actually in Bonium Tablets

The pack is made by Centaur Pharmaceuticals. Each uncoated tablet contains:

  • Calcium citrate 1000mg — the citrate form, absorbed with or without food. This supplies a little over 200mg of elemental calcium, which is the figure to use when you are adding up your day.
  • Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) 200 IU — the full daily reference intake, for the normal absorption of calcium.
  • Magnesium 100mg elemental — from magnesium hydroxide, for normal bones and normal muscle function.
  • Zinc 4mg elemental — from zinc sulphate, for normal bones and normal protein synthesis.

That elemental calcium figure is the one to hold on to. Calcium citrate is a compound, and calcium is part of it by weight, so a tablet declaring 1000mg of calcium citrate gives you something over 200mg of the mineral itself — roughly a quarter of the European daily reference intake. Bonium works as a daily top-up alongside the calcium in your food, and reading it that way is how you get the dose right. Our pharmacist will do the arithmetic with you.

How to Take It, and What to Expect

One tablet daily with a meal is the usual instruction, and your doctor or our pharmacist may suggest two depending on your diet. Swallow it with water. Because the calcium is citrate, the mealtime is for comfort rather than absorption, so bedtime or first thing works too.

Bone responds slowly, and this is the part people most often get wrong. Nothing changes in a week. Bone remodelling runs on a cycle of several months, so give a bone supplement three to six months before you form a view, and keep taking it steadily rather than in bursts. The people who get the most out of a product like this are the ones who make it part of a routine and stop thinking about it.

Pair it with what the nutrients need in order to work. Weight-bearing movement — walking, stairs, carrying shopping — tells bone to hold on to the minerals you are feeding it, and food adds to the total: milk, maziwa lala, sardines and omena eaten with the bones, sukuma wiki and other dark greens.

Who Bonium Tablets Suit

Adults topping up a diet that is light on dairy. Women after menopause, when bone turnover speeds up. Older adults, who tend to have both lower stomach acid and lower intake, and for whom the citrate form earns its keep twice over. Anyone on a long-term acid-reducing medicine. People recovering from a fracture, on their doctor’s advice. And anyone who would rather take one tablet than three.

Is Bonium Right for You?

A few things are worth checking before you start, and our pharmacist is happy to go through them with you.

  • Add up your total calcium first. If you already take Zedcal, Gemcal, Safecal, an antacid or a multivitamin, you may be getting calcium from more than one place. More is not better, and the total is what counts.
  • Timing around other medicines. Calcium can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics, thyroid medicines such as levothyroxine, and iron tablets. Separating them by two to four hours usually settles it; tell us what you take and we will set out a timetable.
  • If you have kidney disease, kidney stones or a high blood calcium level, speak to your doctor before starting a calcium supplement, as the right dose for you may be different.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding? Calcium needs rise in pregnancy, and this is a sensible supplement for many women, but it is one to confirm with your doctor or midwife rather than start on your own.
  • Possible effects to know about. Calcium and magnesium can cause mild stomach upset, constipation or loose stools in some people, usually settling as the body adjusts; taking the tablet with food helps. Anything that persists is a reason to call us.

Storing It

Keep the pack in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, below 25 degrees, and well out of reach of children. Calcium and iron tablets are a common cause of accidental poisoning in small children, so a high shelf rather than a bedside drawer. Leave the tablets in their blister until you take them and check the expiry date on the carton.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Bonium tablets used for?

They are a daily supplement for bone health. The calcium, vitamin D3, magnesium and zinc in them all carry authorised European claims for the maintenance of normal bones, and vitamin D helps your body absorb the calcium you take in.

What are the side effects of Bonium tablets?

The commonest are mild and digestive: stomach upset, constipation or loose stools, which often settle as your body adjusts and are usually helped by taking the tablet with food. Taking much more than the recommended amount can raise calcium levels too far, which is why the total across all your supplements matters. Call us if anything persists.

What is the composition of Bonium tablets?

Each tablet contains calcium citrate 1000mg, vitamin D3 200 IU, magnesium 100mg elemental from magnesium hydroxide, and zinc 4mg elemental from zinc sulphate. The manufacturer is Centaur Pharmaceuticals.

How much actual calcium does one tablet give me?

A little over 200mg of elemental calcium, which is roughly a quarter of the European daily reference intake. Calcium citrate is a compound and calcium is only part of it by weight, so the 1000mg on the label is the compound rather than the mineral.

Can I take Bonium tablets in pregnancy?

Calcium requirements rise in pregnancy and many women are advised to supplement, but confirm it with your doctor or midwife first, especially if you are already taking a prenatal multivitamin that contains calcium and vitamin D.

Should I take it with food or on an empty stomach?

Either works, and that is the advantage of the citrate form. One tablet with a meal is the usual instruction and is gentlest on the stomach, but citrate dissolves without stomach acid, so between meals is fine if that suits your routine better.

Is calcium citrate better than calcium carbonate?

It is the easier of the two to absorb, and it works without stomach acid, so it suits older people and anyone on omeprazole or a similar medicine. Carbonate carries more calcium per tablet and costs less, so for someone with normal stomach acid who takes it with meals it remains a reasonable option. Ask our pharmacist which fits you.

Can I take it with my thyroid tablet or my iron tablets?

Separate them. Calcium can reduce how well levothyroxine, iron and some antibiotics are absorbed, so leave two to four hours between them. Tell us what you take and we will write out a simple timetable.

How long before I notice anything?

Bone works on a cycle of months, so give it three to six months of steady daily use before judging it. This is a supplement you take consistently in the background rather than one you feel working.

How many tablets are in a pack, and what does it cost?

Call or message us and we will confirm the current pack size and price before you order, along with what is on the shelf today.
