Saferon Syrup, Iron That Goes Down Easily
Saferon syrup helps rebuild the red blood cells that carry oxygen around the body, and it does it in a form built to be easy to take: no metallic taste, no need for an empty stomach, and measured by the spoonful so a baby and an adult can share one bottle.
It suits infants and children who need iron, pregnant women on clinical advice, older people, and anyone who has tried an ordinary iron tonic and could not face the taste a second time. The iron in it is a different chemistry from most of what sits on a pharmacy shelf, and that difference is the whole point of the product rather than a detail on the label.
What Makes Saferon Syrup Different
The iron here is iron (III) hydroxide polymaltose complex, which is non-ionic. In ordinary iron tonics the iron is an ionic salt, and free iron ions are what cause the sharp metallic taste, the staining and much of the stomach complaint.
In a polymaltose complex the iron is wrapped in a carbohydrate shell and released in a controlled way. Three practical things follow. It tastes of almost nothing, which matters enormously when you are giving it to a four-year-old twice a day. It can be taken with food rather than on an empty stomach. And it is kinder to the enamel of a child’s teeth than a liquid ionic iron.
This form has been in clinical use for decades and is one of the better-documented iron preparations in paediatrics.
How to Take Saferon Syrup
Each 5ml spoonful carries 50mg of elemental iron. The usual schedules are:
- Adults: 10 to 20ml daily where iron is clearly low, or 5 to 10ml daily as a steady amount.
- Children one to twelve years: 5 to 10ml daily.
- Infants under one year: 2.5 to 5ml daily, and please ask us before you start.
Take it with or just after a meal, which this form allows and most iron tonics do not. Shake the bottle before measuring, and use the measure that comes with it rather than a kitchen spoon.
For Babies and Children
This is the reason most people buy Saferon, and the reason to get it right.
For a child under one, speak to us or your clinic before starting. The amount depends on weight and on why the child needs iron, and that is a two-minute conversation rather than a guess. For children from one to twelve the usual range is 5 to 10ml daily, and the taste is mild enough that most children take it without a fight, which is half the battle with any child’s medicine.
Keep the bottle high up and out of reach at every age. Iron is one of the few household products genuinely dangerous to a small child who drinks a lot of it at once.
Saferon or Ranferon? Choosing Between Them
We stock both and people ask us this constantly, so here is a straight answer.
Saferon is the gentler-tasting one. Polymaltose iron, no metallic taste, can be taken with food, easier on a child’s teeth, and the one to choose when getting the dose down is the problem. Ranferon is the fuller formula. Ionic iron with folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin C and zinc, and the research is clear that ionic iron raises haemoglobin somewhat faster: a 2026 review of eight paediatric trials found a greater rise in haemoglobin with ionic iron, with side-effect rates that came out much the same between the two.
So: Saferon when taste, tolerance or a reluctant child is the obstacle. Ranferon when the priority is bringing a low count up as quickly as possible. Our pharmacist will look at the blood result, the age and who has to swallow it, and tell you which one fits.
In Pregnancy
Iron is important in pregnancy and antenatal clinics issue it routinely, which is why this question comes up so often.
Take it in pregnancy on your doctor’s or midwife’s advice. The thing that matters is your total: if the clinic has already given you iron and folic acid, bring it to our counter and we will add it up with you rather than have you take two lots by accident.
What Is in Each Spoonful
Iron (III) hydroxide polymaltose complex providing 50mg of elemental iron per 5ml, in a 150ml bottle. Confirm the full formula against your label, since the manufacturer makes several versions of this product and some add folic acid.
Who Saferon Syrup Is For
Babies and children who need iron, and the parents who have to persuade them. Pregnant women on clinical advice. Older people and anyone who finds tablets hard to swallow. People whose stomachs have rejected an ordinary iron tonic. And households where two or three people need iron at different amounts from one bottle.
What to Expect
Energy usually begins to lift within two to four weeks, which is the body putting new iron to work long before the stores are full.
Refilling the stores takes three months or more, and stopping as soon as everyone feels better is the commonest mistake with iron. If a blood test started this, have another before you decide you are finished. Darker stools are normal with any iron.
Is Saferon Syrup Right for You?
Iron is among the most useful things in a pharmacy and one of the few worth being careful with. Our pharmacist is glad to go through it with you first if any of these apply:
- You are buying for a baby under one, or for any child where nobody has said how much to give. Keep the bottle high up, because iron in excess is genuinely harmful to a small child.
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding, so we can add up what your clinic has already issued.
- You have haemochromatosis or another condition where iron accumulates, or an anaemia that is something other than iron deficiency, in which case iron is the wrong answer and we will say so.
- You already take another iron product, a multivitamin containing iron, or you have been on iron for several months without a recent blood test.
Side effects are uncommon with this form and usually mild, most often a little nausea or constipation, which generally settles when the dose is taken with a meal.
Storing It
Keep the bottle closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, well out of reach of children, and use it before the expiry date on the label.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Saferon syrup used for?
It supplies iron, which the body needs to make haemoglobin and red blood cells. People take it when iron is low, and it is used particularly in children, in pregnancy on clinical advice, and by anyone who finds ordinary iron tonics hard to tolerate.
What is the Saferon syrup dosage for a child?
Children from one to twelve years usually take 5 to 10ml daily. For an infant under one year the range is 2.5 to 5ml daily, and that is one to agree with us or your clinic first, because the amount depends on the child’s weight and on why they need iron.
What is the dosage for adults?
10 to 20ml daily where iron is clearly low, or 5 to 10ml daily as a steady amount. Each 5ml spoonful carries 50mg of elemental iron. Take it with or just after food.
Saferon or Ranferon, which is better?
They are built for different problems. Saferon uses polymaltose iron: no metallic taste, can be taken with food, easier on a child’s teeth, and the one to choose when getting the dose down is the obstacle. Ranferon is ionic iron with folic acid, B12, vitamin C and zinc, and a 2026 review of eight paediatric trials found ionic iron produced a greater rise in haemoglobin, with side-effect rates much the same. Bring the blood result to our pharmacist and we will tell you which fits.
What is iron polymaltose, and why does it matter?
It is iron wrapped in a carbohydrate shell rather than loose as an ionic salt. Free iron ions cause the metallic taste, the staining and much of the stomach upset, so a complex avoids most of that and can be taken with food. It has been in clinical use for decades.
Will it stain my child’s teeth?
Far less than a liquid ionic iron, because there is no free iron to deposit on enamel. It is still sensible to follow the dose with a drink of water or a rinse, which is good practice with any medicine a child takes by spoon.
Can I take it with food?
Yes, and that is one of the advantages of this form. Most iron tonics work best on an empty stomach and are harder to tolerate for it. Take this one with or just after a meal.
Is it safe in pregnancy?
Take it in pregnancy on your doctor’s or midwife’s advice. Iron is important in pregnancy and clinics issue it routinely, so what matters is adding up your total rather than taking two lots. Bring what the clinic gave you to our counter.
How long before it works?
Energy usually lifts within two to four weeks, which is the body using new iron rather than the stores being full. Refilling the stores takes three months or more. If a blood test started this, have another before stopping.
What are the side effects?
Uncommon with this form, and usually mild: a little nausea or constipation, which generally settles if the dose is taken with a meal. Darker stools are normal with any iron and nothing to worry about.
Who should avoid it?
Anyone with haemochromatosis or another iron overload condition, anyone whose anaemia is something other than iron deficiency, and anyone allergic to the ingredients. Come and talk to us, and keep it out of reach of children.
