Why it happens: a resting hair sits in the follicle for weeks before dropping out on its own. Minoxidil pushes follicles back into their growing phase, and a follicle cannot start a new hair while the old resting one is still in it. So the old hairs are evicted in a batch, at the start. It is the clearing-out that has to happen before regrowth can.
This is the single commonest reason people abandon minoxidil, and they abandon it at the precise moment it began working. If your hair sheds harder in week three, that is the signal to continue rather than the signal to stop. It settles by about the third month.

You Have to Keep Using It

- A completely dry scalp. Damp skin absorbs more and irritates more. If you have just washed, wait until it is properly dry
- One millilitre, onto the scalp, not the hair. Part the hair and apply along the partings, spreading with a fingertip. The hair shaft cannot absorb anything
- Follow the frequency on your carton. Most five per cent solutions are applied twice daily; ask us if the pack is not clear, because under-applying is the quiet way this product appears to fail
- Leave it on for at least four hours before washing, swimming or sweating heavily. Anything less and you have applied it without absorbing it
- Wash your hands straight afterwards, and let the scalp dry before a pillow, a hat or a headscarf
- Take a daylight photograph today and another every month. Judge it at six months, not before
Keep It Away From Cats
An unusual warning and a serious one. Minoxidil is severely toxic to cats and a small exposure can be fatal. A spilled drop licked off the floor, a cat rubbing against a freshly treated scalp, or sleeping on the pillow afterwards is enough.
If you have a cat: apply it where the cat does not go, close the bottle immediately, wash your hands, keep the cat off your pillow and away from your head until the scalp is dry. If a cat does contact it, that is a same-day veterinary emergency, not a wait-and-see. Dogs are less sensitive but it is not good for them either.
Who Should Not Use It
Not in pregnancy, while breastfeeding, or while trying to conceive. Not on broken, sunburnt, infected or freshly treated scalp skin. Not under the age of eighteen.
If you have heart disease, or are treated for blood pressure, ask a doctor first. Minoxidil began life as a blood-pressure tablet, and although very little is absorbed through the scalp, that history is the reason for the caution. Stop and seek advice if you get chest pain, a racing heartbeat, dizziness or faintness, swollen hands, ankles or feet, or sudden unexplained weight gain.
Women should know about unwanted hair. Minoxidil can cause fine hair growth where it is not wanted — most often the forehead, temples and upper cheeks — usually from the solution running off the scalp or from hands not washed. It reverses on stopping. Applying carefully and washing your hands prevents most of it, and a lower strength is an option worth asking us about.
Minoxidil Does Not Work on Every Kind of Hair Loss

Minoxidil works on pattern hair loss. It has some use in diffuse shedding after illness, stress or childbirth. It does not restore a follicle that has scarred, and that is the key point here, because the commonest cause of hair loss among Kenyan women is traction — braids and weaves fitted tight, extensions carrying weight, ponytails pulled back daily, relaxing on top of it. The signature is thinning at the temples and along the front hairline while the rest of the head is fine.
Caught early, traction recovers once the tension comes off, and minoxidil can help alongside that. Left long enough the follicle scars, and at that stage nothing regrows it — not this, not a supplement, not an oil. So if your edges have been going for months, the appointment matters more than the bottle.
And see a doctor rather than starting anything if the shedding is worsening month on month, if it comes out in patches or coins, if the scalp is painful, or if it arrives with tiredness, weight change or heavy periods. Thyroid disease and iron deficiency both cause hair loss and both are treatable once found.
If Your Scalp Itches or Flakes
