Methyl B12 1,000 mcg, and Why the Form Matters

Methyl B12 helps keep your energy, your nerves and your red blood cells supplied, because vitamin B12 contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to the normal functioning of the nervous system and to normal red blood cell formation. Each lozenge carries 1,000 mcg of methylcobalamin and dissolves in the mouth. One hundred lozenges from NOW Foods.

Vitamin B12 is the one nutrient a plant-based diet reliably runs short of, and it is also the one most quietly affected by common medicines and by getting older. Who actually runs low, what the lozenge is entitled to claim for itself, and the one question worth settling with a blood test first are all set out below. Our pharmacist is here for that conversation and our doctor is here if it turns out you need one.

What One Lozenge Gives You

  • Vitamin B12 1,000 mcg — as methylcobalamin, which is 40,000% of the daily reference intake. B12 is water-soluble and the excess leaves in your urine, which is why a dose this generous is both normal and safe.
  • Methylcobalamin, rather than cyanocobalamin — the form your body already carries and uses, so it goes to work with no conversion step first. It also matters for a small group of people in whom cyanocobalamin is avoided, including anyone with an inherited optic neuropathy.
  • Sweetened with xylitol, organic stevia leaf and organic monk fruit — no sugar and no artificial sweetener, which is why it suits someone watching their blood glucose.
  • Vegan, and free of wheat, gluten, soy, milk, egg, fish, shellfish, tree nuts and sesame — the shortest allergen list of anything on our shelf.

What Vitamin B12 Does in Your Body

Vitamin B12 holds eight separate authorised claims, which is more than almost any nutrient we sell, and every one of them is available at this dose: it contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to the normal functioning of the nervous system, to normal homocysteine metabolism, to normal psychological function, to normal red blood cell formation, to the normal function of the immune system, to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and it has a role in the process of cell division.

The two that bring most people here are the tiredness one and the red blood cell one, and they are connected: B12 is needed to build red blood cells, and when it runs low the cells come out large and few, which is what tiredness from low B12 actually feels like from the inside. The nerve one matters more in the long run, because B12 maintains the sheath around your nerves, and that is the part worth protecting early.

Who Runs Short of B12, and Why

B12 comes almost entirely from animal foods, and absorbing it takes a working stomach and a working last stretch of small intestine. That gives several groups a genuine reason to supplement.

If you follow a vegan or largely plant-based diet, this is the nutrient to take seriously, and it is the main reason this product exists. Plants carry essentially none of it, stores run down over years rather than weeks, and by the time tiredness arrives the deficit has usually been building a long time. B12 and vitamin D are the two nutrients a plant-based diet reliably falls short on, so if you are covering one it is worth covering the other — a daily vitamin D3 is the other half of that pair.

If you take metformin for diabetes, please read this one. Metformin reduces how much B12 you absorb, the effect grows with years of use, and it is common enough that checking B12 periodically in long-term metformin users is now widely advised. Kenya has a great many people on long-term metformin. If that is you, ask our doctor about a B12 level rather than simply starting a lozenge, because knowing the number is worth more than guessing at it.

If you take omeprazole, esomeprazole or another acid-reducing medicine, you absorb less B12 from food, because releasing it from food needs stomach acid. A lozenge is a sensible answer here, since it arrives already free of food and so depends far less on stomach acid.

If you are over 50, or you have had stomach or bowel surgery, absorption falls for reasons that have nothing to do with diet. A generous oral dose covers most people in that position comfortably.

One Thing to Raise With Us If You Take Folic Acid

Folic acid and B12 work on the same pathway, and folic acid on its own can tidy up the blood picture that low B12 produces while leaving the nerve side of it to carry on. That is the single most useful thing a pharmacist can tell you about either vitamin.

So if you already take folic acid, or you take an omega-3 with folic acid and B12 in it, bring that to the counter so we can look at the whole picture rather than one half of it. It is a two-minute conversation and it is exactly the sort of thing a website normally leaves you to find out for yourself.

Why a Lozenge Rather Than a Tablet

You hold it in your mouth until it dissolves, so it needs no water and no swallowing, and some B12 is taken up through the lining of the mouth on the way. It tastes pleasant, which matters more than it sounds for something taken daily for years. Chew and swallow it instead if you prefer; it still works.

What It Costs You a Day

One hundred lozenges at one a day is a little over three months, which works out at roughly 23 shillings a day. That makes it the cheapest daily product on our shelves by a wide margin. NOW make a larger bottle too, so tell us if you would rather cover most of a year in one order.

How to Take It

One lozenge once or twice daily, with or after food. Hold it in your mouth until it dissolves, or chew and swallow it. One a day covers most people who are supplementing for diet or for age; twice daily belongs with advice rather than guesswork. Keep to a maximum of two a day unless our doctor has told you otherwise.

What Is in the Lozenge

Vitamin B12 as methylcobalamin 1,000 mcg. Other ingredients: xylitol, hydroxypropyl cellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, citric acid, stearic acid from a vegetable source, natural flavours, organic stevia leaf extract and organic monk fruit extract. Vegan. Free of wheat, gluten, soy, milk, egg, fish, shellfish, tree nuts and sesame. One hundred lozenges a bottle.

Is Methyl B12 Right for You?

  • If you are tired and you have not had a blood test, start with the test. Tiredness has many causes and low B12 is only one of them — iron, thyroid and several others look much the same from the outside. Our doctor can arrange the right tests, and a lozenge taken for months on a guess is a poor substitute for knowing.
  • If you have numbness, tingling, pins and needles or unsteadiness, see our doctor before you buy rather than after. Those are nerve symptoms, they need assessing properly, and some causes of low B12 are treated with injections rather than lozenges. Taking a high oral dose first can settle the blood count and leave the nerve problem to carry on quietly, which is the caution that genuinely matters.
  • If you take metformin long-term, ask about a B12 level rather than simply starting. The number changes what you should do and how often you should check it.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, B12 matters in pregnancy and the dose still deserves a conversation, so speak to our doctor or our pharmacist first. Adults only otherwise — for children, ask us and we will point you at something sized for them.
  • If you have a dog or a cat, keep this bottle well out of their reach. Xylitol is genuinely dangerous to pets even in small amounts. If a pet swallows any, go straight to a vet.

Storing It

Keep the bottle closed in a cool dry place, away from sunlight and humidity, and out of reach of children and pets.

Beyond the capital we deliver to Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Eldoret, Nyeri, Machakos, Athi River, Kitengela, Kajiado, Naivasha, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kisii, Migori, Homa Bay, Siaya, Bungoma, Busia, Kakamega, Vihiga, Webuye, Kitale, Nandi Hills, Iten, Kapenguria, Embu, Meru, Chuka, Kerugoya, Murang’a, Othaya, Nyahururu, Nanyuki, Maralal, Isiolo, Marsabit, Moyale, Wajir, Mandera, Garissa, Lodwar, Kitui, Mwingi, Makueni, Emali, Kibwezi, Voi, Taveta, Wundanyi, Mariakani, Diani, Ukunda, Kilifi, Watamu, Malindi, Lamu and Hola. At one lozenge a day a bottle of a hundred runs a little over three months, and NOW make a larger bottle as well, so tell us how long you want covered and we will quote both.

Across Africa, ask us before you order. We have sent orders to Uganda, Tanzania, Somaliland and as far as Malawi, and we will quote for Rwanda, Burundi, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Mozambique, Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa and the rest of the continent. This is a vegan product with no animal-derived ingredient and no major allergen in it, which keeps the import paperwork about as simple as it gets, and lozenges travel well because the bottle is sealed and nothing in it needs refrigeration.

Living abroad? Order from wherever you are and we deliver to your family here in Kenya. Kenyans in the UK, the United States, Canada, South Africa and the Gulf order from us regularly for parents and relatives at home. B12 is a particularly sensible thing to send: absorption falls with age for reasons that have nothing to do with how well somebody eats, a lozenge needs no water and no swallowing, and a single bottle covers a quarter of a year. Tell us who it is for and how many months you want covered and we will set up the repeat.

Why Buy Your Methyl B12 from HealthAlone Kenya?

HealthAlone is a pharmacist-led health ecosystem licensed by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, and our stock is original, sealed and correctly stored. Kahawa Sukari is a real counter with real pharmacists behind it.

Our pharmacists will ask the one question that decides whether this is the right purchase at all — whether you have had your B12 measured — and tell you plainly when a blood test should come first. They will check it against your metformin, your acid-reducing medicine and any folic acid you already take, explain what the eight authorised claims for B12 actually mean in plain words, point out that nerve symptoms deserve assessing before supplementing rather than after, and warn you about the xylitol if you have pets at home. Our doctor is here too if the answer turns out to be a test, an injection course, or something else entirely.

It is one more step in our vision: building Africa’s most trusted health ecosystem, accessible to everyone, everywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Methyl B12 actually do?

Vitamin B12 holds eight authorised claims and this dose qualifies for all of them: it contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to the normal functioning of the nervous system, to normal homocysteine metabolism, to normal psychological function, to normal red blood cell formation, to the normal function of the immune system, to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, and it has a role in the process of cell division. In plain words: it helps you build red blood cells, maintain your nerves, and convert food into usable energy.

Should I have a blood test before I start?

If you are taking it because you eat a plant-based diet, or because you are over 50, no — that is sensible prevention and the dose is safe. If you are taking it because you feel tired, or because you have numbness or tingling, then yes, and please do it before rather than after. Tiredness has many causes that look identical from the outside, and starting a high dose first makes the test harder to interpret. Our doctor can arrange it.

Is methylcobalamin better than cyanocobalamin?

It is the form your body already carries, so it needs no conversion step, and it avoids the trace cyanide group that cyanocobalamin carries — which is irrelevant at ordinary doses for almost everyone, but matters for people with reduced kidney function and for the small group with an inherited optic neuropathy, where cyanocobalamin is deliberately avoided. For most people both forms raise B12 levels perfectly well, and we would rather tell you that than oversell the difference. What we will say is that methylcobalamin is the form we would choose, and it is the form in this bottle.

Can B12 reduce my risk of heart disease?

No, and we will not say it does. You may see that claim attached to B12 elsewhere, usually carrying an asterisk that leads to a footnote in which the regulator who permitted it states that the evidence is inconclusive. What B12 is properly entitled to say is that it contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism, which is a statement about a metabolic pathway rather than about your heart. If cardiovascular risk is your concern, that deserves a proper assessment with our doctor.

I take metformin. Does that change anything?

Yes, and this is the most useful thing here for a great many Kenyans. Metformin reduces how much B12 you absorb and the effect builds over years of use, which is why periodic B12 checking in long-term metformin users is now widely advised. If that is you, ask our doctor for a B12 level rather than simply starting a lozenge. You may well end up taking this product, but you will know why and how often to recheck.

I take omeprazole. Will this still work?

Yes, and a lozenge is arguably the better choice for you. Acid-reducing medicines make it harder to release B12 from food, because that step needs stomach acid. A supplement arrives already free of food, so it is less dependent on acid. This is one of the few situations where the format genuinely matters.

Can I take it if I already take folic acid?

Yes, and please tell us that you do. Folic acid and B12 work on the same pathway, and folic acid alone can correct the blood picture that low B12 causes while the nerve side of it carries on unnoticed. That is the single most important interaction to know about, and it applies whether your folic acid comes in a tablet of its own or inside a combination product. Bring your list to the counter.

How quickly will I notice anything?

If you were genuinely low, energy often improves within a few weeks. If you were not low, you may well notice nothing at all, which is the honest answer and the reason the blood test matters. Nerve symptoms, where they recover, recover slowly over months, and some do not fully recover, which is why they should be assessed early rather than waited out.

Is 1,000 mcg too much? It says 40,000% of the reference intake.

No. B12 is water-soluble, no upper safe level has been set for it, and the excess leaves in your urine. The large number is there because only a small fraction of a big oral dose is absorbed when the normal absorption route is impaired, so a generous dose is how an oral product covers people whose absorption has fallen. A very small number of people notice acne at high doses, and if that happens tell us and we will adjust.

Is it suitable for vegans and vegetarians?

Both, and this is the product’s strongest reason to exist. The methylcobalamin is not animal-derived, the lozenge contains no major allergen, and B12 is the one nutrient a plant-based diet essentially cannot supply. If you eat no animal foods at all, this is the supplement to be consistent with. Vitamin D is the other one worth covering.

Does it contain sugar? Can a diabetic take it?

There is no sugar and no artificial sweetener. It is sweetened with xylitol, organic stevia leaf extract and organic monk fruit extract, none of which meaningfully affect blood glucose. Please still mention it to our pharmacist alongside your other medicines, especially if metformin is one of them, because that conversation is worth having for a different reason.

Why the warning about pets?

Xylitol is seriously toxic to dogs and dangerous to some other pets, in amounts far smaller than you would think. A chewable lozenge that tastes pleasant and sits in a bottle on a kitchen counter is exactly the sort of thing a dog finds. Keep it closed and well out of reach, and if a pet swallows any, go to a vet immediately rather than waiting to see.
