Lutein Esters 10mg 60s

Lutein Esters 10mg is a once-daily lutein supplement from marigold flowers that helps build macular pigment, the yellow filter at the centre of your retina that absorbs blue light. It suits people who eat few dark green leaves, and it does not sharpen eyesight. If you have been diagnosed with macular degeneration, ask our pharmacist first, because the evidence supports a fuller formula.

Lutein Esters 10mg Softgels, 60s

Lutein is the yellow pigment your eye stores in the macula, the small area at the centre of the retina you use to read, sew and recognise faces. Each softgel supplies 10mg of lutein from marigold flower extract, in olive oil so it absorbs with food, one a day for two months.

It suits someone who eats few dark green leaves. It does not sharpen eyesight or treat macular degeneration, and people already diagnosed with that disease need a fuller formula, explained below.

What Lutein Does in Your Eye

It builds a filter. Lutein and its partner pigment zeaxanthin collect in the macula, where together they form what eye doctors call macular pigment, a thin yellow layer sitting in front of the light-sensing cells. Yellow absorbs blue light, the highest-energy part of visible light, so the pigment takes some of that load off the cells behind it. Lutein is also an antioxidant, meaning it neutralises some of the reactive molecules that light and oxygen produce in a tissue working as hard as the retina does.

Your body cannot make lutein. All of it comes from food, mainly dark green leaves, and the amount in your macula rises and falls with what you eat over months. Taking lutein every day raises that pigment in most people, and that is the most firmly established thing a lutein supplement does.

What a Lutein Supplement Can and Cannot Do

It will not change your glasses prescription. Short sight, long sight and the need for reading glasses after forty come from the shape of the eye and the stiffening of its lens. No pigment alters either.

It has not been shown to prevent macular degeneration. The large prevention trials in healthy people tested other antioxidants and found they did not prevent the disease; lutein itself has not been tested in that way. Raising macular pigment is a reasonable thing to want, but it is not the same as a proven reduction in risk, and nobody should take this softgel in place of an eye examination.

It will not treat cataract, glaucoma or diabetic eye disease. These are common causes of failing sight after forty in Kenya, and each needs an eye examination rather than a supplement.

If You Have Been Diagnosed with Macular Degeneration

This is the one situation where the evidence is strong, and it points to a different product. In the large American trial known as AREDS2, people with intermediate macular degeneration, or advanced disease in one eye, took a combination of vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, 10mg of lutein and 2mg of zeaxanthin every day. That full formula slowed progression to the advanced stage.

Lutein taken alone, without the rest of the formula, made little or no difference to progression in the pooled evidence. So if an eye doctor has told you that you have macular degeneration and recommended a supplement, the one they mean is the full AREDS2 formula. Ask our pharmacist before buying and we will find the right one with you.

The same trial carries a useful fact for smokers and former smokers. The original formula used beta-carotene, which nearly doubled the risk of lung cancer in people who had ever smoked; lutein replaced it, with no increase in that risk. If you smoke or used to, an eye formula containing beta-carotene is the one to avoid, and a lutein formula is the one to choose.

Macular degeneration is not rare here. In a study of adults over fifty in Nakuru, about one in nine had early signs of it and around one in a hundred had the late form. If straight lines such as door frames start to look wavy, or a grey or dark patch appears in the centre of what you see, see an eye doctor within days rather than weeks.

Screens, Blue Light and Tired Eyes

Because macular pigment absorbs blue light, lutein is often sold for people who spend long hours on phones and laptops. There is one small trial behind this: 48 university students who took 24mg a day of lutein and two related pigments for six months, more than twice the amount in this softgel, reported less eye strain, fewer headaches and better sleep than those given a dummy capsule.

That is encouraging and it is not settled. The trial was small, funded by an ingredient manufacturer and used a larger dose. Most tired eyes at a screen come from blinking less and focusing close for hours, and the 20-20-20 habit does more for that: every twenty minutes, look at something twenty feet away for twenty seconds.

Lutein and Your Skin

It is not a sunscreen and it does not lighten skin. One twelve-week trial of 46 people taking 10mg of lutein with 2mg of zeaxanthin found a small measured increase in the amount of sunlight needed to redden the skin, and a small change in skin tone on instruments. The participants had lighter skin types, the trial was funded by the ingredient maker, and the effect was far smaller than any sunscreen provides. For protection from the sun on the equator, a daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is the only thing that works.

Food First: Where Lutein Comes From

A cup of cooked spinach carries roughly twice the lutein of one softgel. Sukuma wiki, managu, terere, peas and yellow maize all add to it, and eggs supply a smaller amount in a form the body absorbs well. Cooking the leaves with a little oil helps, because lutein dissolves in fat.

So a lutein supplement makes most sense for someone who rarely eats greens, or who wants a steady daily amount without counting. For someone who eats sukuma wiki most days, the extra is modest.

Before You Start, Check These

Lutein has a strong safety record at 10mg to 20mg a day, and no clinically important side effects have been reported at those amounts. Speak to our pharmacist first if any of these apply:

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding — lutein from food is safe, but there is too little research on supplement doses in pregnancy, and the label asks you to consult a doctor first.
  • Children — the label says it is not recommended for children.
  • Allergy to marigold, ragweed, chrysanthemum or daisy — the lutein comes from marigold flowers, which belong to that plant family.
  • A beta-carotene supplement — the two compete for absorption, so taking both lowers the lutein you absorb.
  • Orlistat or another medicine that blocks fat absorption — lutein needs fat to be absorbed, so less of it gets through.

How to Take It, and How Long a Bottle Lasts

One softgel a day with a meal that contains some fat, such as food cooked in oil, avocado, eggs, milk or groundnuts. Taken on an empty stomach or with a fat-free meal, much of it passes through unabsorbed.

At one a day, a bottle of 60 lasts two months. Macular pigment builds slowly, over months rather than weeks, and there is nothing to feel while it happens. If you are taking it for your eyes, think of it as a steady daily habit rather than a course with a finish line.

What Is in the Softgel

Each softgel supplies 10mg of lutein from marigold flower extract (Tagetes erecta), in organic extra virgin olive oil with silicon dioxide. The capsule shell is made from bovine gelatin, glycerin, water and caramel colour. It is made without wheat, gluten, soy, corn, milk, egg, fish or shellfish.

Because the shell is bovine gelatin, it is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans, and anyone who avoids beef, or needs halal certification, should ask us about the shell before ordering.

Storing It

Keep the bottle tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, since light breaks lutein down. It does not need a fridge. Keep it out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is lutein and what does it do in the eye?

Lutein is a yellow plant pigment that your eye stores in the macula, the centre of the retina you use for reading and fine detail. There it forms part of the macular pigment, which absorbs blue light and acts as an antioxidant. Your body cannot make it, so all of it comes from food or a supplement.

Will a lutein supplement improve my eyesight?

No. It will not change your glasses prescription or remove the need for reading glasses, because those come from the shape of the eye and the stiffening of its lens. What lutein does is raise the pigment in the macula over months.

Does lutein prevent macular degeneration?

That has not been shown. The prevention trials in healthy people tested other antioxidants and found no benefit, and lutein has not been tested in that way. It is not a substitute for an eye examination, especially after fifty.

I have been diagnosed with macular degeneration. Is this the right supplement?

Probably not on its own. The supplement shown to slow the disease is the full AREDS2 formula of vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, copper, 10mg of lutein and 2mg of zeaxanthin, taken by people with intermediate or one-sided advanced disease. Lutein alone made little or no difference. Ask our pharmacist and we will find the full formula with you.

Does lutein protect my eyes from phone and laptop screens?

Macular pigment does absorb blue light. One small trial of 48 students taking 24mg a day of lutein and related pigments for six months found less eye strain and fewer headaches, but that was more than twice this dose and has not been confirmed in larger studies. For tired eyes at a screen, looking twenty feet away for twenty seconds every twenty minutes helps more reliably.

Does lutein lighten skin or work as a sunscreen?

No. One small trial found a slight measured change in skin tone and sun tolerance on lighter skin types, far smaller than any sunscreen gives. On the equator, a daily broad-spectrum sunscreen is what protects your skin.

How long before lutein does anything?

Macular pigment builds over months rather than weeks, and there is nothing to feel while it happens. Take it daily with food containing some fat and think of it as a long-term habit.

Is a lutein supplement better than eating vegetables?

Not better, only steadier. A cup of cooked spinach carries roughly twice the lutein of one softgel, and sukuma wiki, managu, terere, peas and yellow maize add more. The softgel makes most sense for someone who rarely eats greens.

Is it suitable for vegetarians or a halal diet?

It is not suitable for vegetarians or vegans, because the softgel shell is bovine gelatin. If you avoid beef or need halal certification, ask us about the shell before ordering.

Can I take lutein in pregnancy, or give it to my children?

Lutein from food is safe in pregnancy, but supplement doses have not been studied well enough, and the label asks pregnant or breastfeeding women to consult a doctor first. The label also says it is not recommended for children.
