Liver Support 30ml

Milk thistle, dandelion and turmeric are digestive bitters: they increase bile flow and digestive secretions, which is what helps with heaviness and discomfort after eating. This liver support supplement gives all three as an alcohol-free liquid, a dropperful in water three times daily, and a 30ml bottle is a ten-day course. Do not take it if you have liver disease, gallstones, or react to ragweed and other daisy-family plants.

Nature’s Answer Liver Support, 30ml Alcohol-Free Extract

This liver support supplement helps supply three bitter herbs in one alcohol-free liquid extract, milk thistle, dandelion root and turmeric, taken as a dropperful in a little water three times a day.

Bitter is the accurate description of what these three do, and it is a more modest and more honest account than the name on the bottle. All three increase bile flow and digestive secretions, which is why they have been used after heavy meals for centuries. What none of them is, on the current evidence, is a treatment for a liver. That distinction matters enough to come first, and there is one ingredient here that a person with a liver concern specifically needs to know about.

What These Three Herbs Actually Do

They are digestive bitters. Bitter compounds on the tongue trigger saliva, stomach acid and bile flow before food arrives, which is why a small amount in a little water before eating is the traditional way to take them. If you eat and then feel heavy and uncomfortable for an hour, that is the effect worth trying them for.

Milk thistle is the one with the liver reputation. Meta-analyses of milk thistle in alcoholic and viral hepatitis found no significant effect on mortality, on complications of liver disease, or on liver tissue. Trials that looked for an effect used at least 420mg of silymarin daily in divided doses; a dropperful of a three-herb blend is a small fraction of that.

Dandelion root is approved by the German Commission E for loss of appetite and for indigestion. Not for liver disease, where clinical trials are lacking.

Turmeric has genuine anti-inflammatory interest and a serious caveat, which is the next section.

The Turmeric, and Why We Are Telling You

Turmeric supplements have become the commonest cause of herbal liver injury recorded in the United States. On a product bought for liver health, that is something you should hear from the pharmacy rather than discover later.

The risk is rare, somewhere between one in ten thousand and one in a hundred thousand people who take it. It is concentrated in high-absorption products, particularly those combining curcumin with black pepper extract or using lipid delivery systems. This is a plain liquid extract without piperine, which puts it at the lower-risk end. Turmeric in food, in the amounts anybody cooks with, is not the issue.

But you are reading a liver page, so the people most likely to buy this are people already concerned about their liver, and they are exactly the ones who should not take an unsupervised herbal liver product. If you have liver disease of any kind, or abnormal liver blood tests, do not start this without your doctor.

Know the warning signs. Injury typically appears one to four months after starting, beginning as tiredness, nausea and loss of appetite, then dark urine and yellowing of the eyes or skin. If that happens, stop immediately and get a liver blood test the same week. Stopping promptly is what makes the difference in almost every recorded case.

Two of the Three Are Daisies

Milk thistle and dandelion both belong to the daisy family, alongside ragweed, chrysanthemum, marigold and chamomile. If you react to any of those plants, this bottle contains two reasons not to take it, and anaphylaxis has been reported with milk thistle.

Most people have no idea these plants are related, which is why we say it plainly rather than listing a botanical family name and moving on.

Three Herbs, One Direction on Blood Sugar

All three lower blood glucose to some degree. Silymarin from milk thistle reduced blood glucose and HbA1c meaningfully in trials of type 2 diabetes. Turmeric has a similar effect. There is a published case of low blood sugar in a person with diabetes taking dandelion.

Separately each is modest. Together, on top of metformin, a sulphonylurea or insulin, they pull the same way as your medicine. If you have diabetes, speak to our pharmacist before starting this, and do not change any medicine on your own.

How to Take It, and How Long a Bottle Lasts

One millilitre, roughly 28 drops, three times a day in a small amount of water or tea. Take it about fifteen minutes before eating, and taste it rather than swallowing it quickly, because the bitterness is the mechanism.

At three millilitres a day, a 30ml bottle lasts ten days. This is a short course rather than a daily habit, and it should be bought as one: a fortnight taken deliberately, with a decision at the end. That is also the safer way to use it, given the turmeric.

Before You Start, Check These

Speak to our pharmacist first if any of these apply:

  • Liver disease of any kind, or abnormal liver blood tests — this is the most important one on the list, for the reason above.
  • Allergy to ragweed, chrysanthemum, marigold, daisy or chamomile — two of the three herbs here are in that family.
  • Gallstones, bile duct obstruction or bowel obstruction — all three herbs increase bile flow, which is the last thing wanted when the route out is blocked.
  • Diabetes medicine or insulin — three ingredients pulling the same way. See above.
  • Warfarin, aspirin or any blood thinner — turmeric has a mild effect on platelets.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding — there is not enough information on this combination.
  • Any regular prescription medicine — milk thistle and turmeric both affect liver enzymes that clear medicines. Bring your list.
  • Surgery coming up — tell whoever is operating, because of the turmeric.

Side Effects

Usually mild: stomach discomfort, heartburn in people prone to reflux, loose stools, or a rash in anyone sensitive to the daisy family.

The ones to stop for are the liver signs above, and any rash with swelling or breathlessness.

What Is in the Bottle

Milk thistle providing silymarin, dandelion root, and turmeric providing curcumin, in a 30ml dropper bottle from Nature’s Answer, made with their alcohol-free extraction process. No alcohol, which matters if you avoid it for religious reasons or are in recovery.

The amount of each herb is not stated on this listing. Ask us and we will read it off the bottle before you buy, because with a three-herb blend the split between them is the whole question.

Storing It

Keep the bottle tightly capped, cool, dry and out of direct sunlight, away from the bathroom and the cooker. Do not use it if the safety seal is broken. Keep it out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this liver support supplement detox the liver?

No. A healthy liver detoxifies continuously without help, and no supplement does it for you. What these three herbs do is increase bile flow and digestive secretions, which is a real effect and a different thing. If you have a liver problem, it needs a doctor rather than a bottle.

Is turmeric safe for the liver?

In food, yes. As a supplement, turmeric has become the commonest recorded cause of herbal liver injury in the United States, though the risk is rare and concentrated in high-absorption products containing black pepper extract. This is a plain liquid extract without piperine, at the lower-risk end. Stop and get a liver test if you develop tiredness, nausea, loss of appetite, dark urine or yellowing.

Does milk thistle repair the liver?

Meta-analyses in alcoholic and viral hepatitis found no significant effect on mortality, on complications, or on liver tissue. Trials that looked used at least 420mg of silymarin a day, which is far more than a dropperful of a three-herb blend supplies.

I am allergic to ragweed. Can I take this?

No, not without asking us. Milk thistle and dandelion are both in the daisy family alongside ragweed, chrysanthemum, marigold and chamomile, so this bottle gives you two reasons to be careful. Anaphylaxis has been reported with milk thistle.

Can I take it with diabetes medicine?

Speak to our pharmacist first. All three herbs lower blood glucose to some degree, so together they pull the same way as your medicine and can take you lower than intended.

Can I take it if I have gallstones?

No, not without your doctor. All three herbs increase bile flow, which is exactly what you do not want if the bile duct is blocked or inflamed.

Does it contain alcohol?

No. Nature’s Answer make this with their alcohol-free extraction process, which matters if you avoid alcohol for religious reasons or are in recovery.

How long does a 30ml bottle last?

Ten days at one millilitre three times daily. It is a short course rather than a daily supplement, and given the turmeric that is also the safer way to use it.

Why take it before food?

Because bitters work by being tasted. The bitterness on the tongue sets off the digestive reflex, so about fifteen minutes before eating, in a little water, is the right way. Masking it in juice defeats the purpose.

Will it help my energy and mood?

There is no good evidence that it will, and we would not sell it to you on that basis. If energy or mood is the problem, the cause is worth finding.

What if I have been told my liver enzymes are high?

See your doctor before taking anything herbal. Raised liver enzymes have causes that need identifying, and an unsupervised herbal product is the wrong response to them.
