Description

L-Arginine 500mg Capsules, 100 Capsules

L-arginine is the amino acid your body turns into nitric oxide, and it is taken as a nitric oxide supplement to help support blood flow, blood pressure, and exercise capacity.

Nitric oxide is the signal that tells the muscle in your artery walls to relax. Wider arteries mean easier blood flow, which is why this one amino acid turns up in products for circulation, for the gym, and for erectile difficulty. It is a real mechanism, well understood, and the honest question is not whether it works but whether a capsule delivers enough of it to matter.

How Much You Actually Need

The trials that found anything used one and a half to five grams a day. At 500mg a capsule that is three to ten capsules daily, so a bottle of a hundred lasts somewhere between ten days and a month depending on where in that range you sit.

Work out which end you are aiming for before you buy, because the cost per month differs threefold. Our pharmacist will do that with you, and will say plainly when the arithmetic does not justify the purchase.

What a Nitric Oxide Supplement Can and Cannot Do

Blood pressure. Arginine lowers it modestly in studies, but most of those used doses far above what a capsule bottle sensibly delivers. It is not a substitute for blood pressure medicine, and if you already take one, the two together can drop your pressure further than intended.

Erectile difficulty. This is the most common reason people buy it, and the evidence is genuinely mixed. Some trials at one and a half to five grams daily found improvement, usually in men whose problem is circulatory rather than psychological or hormonal. It is a reasonable thing to try. It is not a treatment, and erectile difficulty is often the first visible sign of a blood vessel problem elsewhere, which is worth finding.

Exercise. The pump you feel is real vasodilation. Whether it makes you stronger or faster is far less clear, and the studies disagree with one another.

Wound healing and recovery after illness is where arginine has its clearest role, because the body’s need for it rises sharply when tissue is repairing.

Arginine or Citrulline?

You will see citrulline sold for the same purpose, and there is a reason. A large share of swallowed arginine is broken down in the gut and liver before it reaches the bloodstream, which is why the doses in studies are measured in grams rather than milligrams. Citrulline survives that first pass and the body converts it to arginine afterwards, so gram for gram it raises blood arginine more reliably.

That does not make arginine the wrong choice. It is cheaper, it is what almost all the clinical evidence was gathered with, and it is the one to use for wound healing and recovery, where the body draws on it directly. If your reason is circulation or the gym and the capsules upset your stomach, ask our pharmacist about citrulline as an alternative.

Who Should Not Take L-Arginine

Anyone who has had a heart attack recently should not take it. This is the firmest warning attached to arginine, and it comes from a trial in heart attack survivors that was stopped early because more people in the arginine group died. If you have had one, this supplement is not for you, whatever it promises about circulation.

Anyone who gets cold sores or genital herpes should think twice. The herpes virus needs arginine to replicate, and supplementing it can bring on an outbreak in people prone to them.

Avoid it in pregnancy and breastfeeding, in kidney disease, and if your blood pressure already runs low. Stop it two weeks before any planned surgery, because of its effect on blood pressure and bleeding.

Medicines That Matter Here

Bring your list to the counter before buying if you take any of these:

  • Nitrates for angina, such as isosorbide or glyceryl trinitrate — this is the important one. Both work through nitric oxide and together they can drop blood pressure dangerously.
  • Sildenafil, tadalafil or any erectile dysfunction tablet — the same pathway again, and the same risk of pressure falling too far.
  • Blood pressure medicine of any kind — including water tablets and beta blockers.
  • Blood thinners — and anything that affects clotting.
  • Diabetes medicine — arginine can affect blood sugar and insulin release.

If you have asthma, mention it too. Inhaled arginine has provoked airway narrowing in studies, and while capsules are a different matter, it is worth a word with the pharmacist first.

How to Take It

Take the capsules with water, spread across the day rather than all at once, and away from a heavy meal if you can, since protein in the gut competes with arginine for absorption. Some people take a portion before exercise for that reason.

Start at the lower end and build up. The commonest complaints — bloating, stomach cramps, loose stools and nausea — are dose related and often settle if you increase slowly rather than starting at six capsules on day one.

Give it four to six weeks before judging it. If your blood pressure is being monitored, keep monitoring it while you take it.

Check the Bottle Before You Take Your First Dose

Bottles of arginine are labelled in two different ways: by the capsule and by the serving. A label reading 1,000mg per serving alongside 500mg capsules means the serving is two capsules, and taking one would put you on half of what the label implies.

Read the supplement facts panel on the bottle in your hand, find the words “per serving” and “servings per container”, and count the capsules that make one. If it is not obvious, bring the bottle to us and we will read it with you.

Storing It

Keep the bottle closed, dry and out of direct sun, and use it within the date on the label. Do not leave it in a car or on a windowsill; heat and moisture spoil amino acid capsules faster than most people expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is L-arginine used for?

It is the raw material the body uses to make nitric oxide, the molecule that relaxes artery walls and widens blood vessels. People take it for circulation, blood pressure support, exercise, erectile difficulty and recovery from injury or illness. It is a food supplement rather than a medicine.

How many capsules a day should I take?

Studies used one and a half to five grams daily, which is three to ten of these 500mg capsules, spread across the day. A bottle of a hundred therefore lasts between ten days and a month. Start low and build up, because the stomach effects are dose related.

Does it help with erectile difficulty?

Sometimes, and mainly where the cause is circulatory. Trials at one and a half to five grams a day have shown improvement in some men and not others. It is worth trying, but erectile difficulty is often an early sign of a wider blood vessel problem, so it is worth seeing a doctor rather than only buying a supplement.

Can I take it with Viagra or a similar tablet?

Not without asking first. Both work on the same nitric oxide pathway, and together they can lower blood pressure more than intended, which causes dizziness and fainting. The same applies to nitrate medicines for angina, where the combination is genuinely risky.

Is it safe if I have had a heart attack?

No. A trial in heart attack survivors was stopped early because more deaths occurred in the group taking arginine. If you have had a heart attack, do not take this supplement, and speak to your cardiologist about what does help circulation after one.

I get cold sores. Can I take it?

Better not to. The herpes virus uses arginine to reproduce, so supplementing it can trigger an outbreak in people who get cold sores or genital herpes. If you still want to try it, do so knowing that, and stop if outbreaks become more frequent.

Will it lower my blood pressure?

Modestly, and mostly in studies using doses well above what a bottle of capsules delivers. Treat any drop as a reason for care rather than a reason to reduce your medicine. If you take blood pressure tablets, keep taking them and tell your pharmacist you have started this.

Does it build muscle?

Not directly. The tighter, fuller feeling during a workout is real vasodilation, but whether that translates into strength or endurance is unsettled and the studies disagree. Protein intake and training do the work.

Why does it upset my stomach?

Bloating, cramps, nausea and loose stools are the usual complaints and they follow the dose. Splitting the capsules across the day, taking them with a little water rather than on an empty stomach, and building up slowly all help. If they persist, the dose is too high for you.

Should I take it before exercise?

If the reason you are taking it is the gym, some people take part of the day’s amount thirty to sixty minutes beforehand, away from a large meal, because protein in the gut competes with arginine for absorption. For circulation or blood pressure, spreading it through the day is more sensible.
