Jointflex Omega

Jointflex Omega supplies glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and omega-3 together, which is a broader joint formula than the glucosamine-and-chondroitin products it sits beside on our shelf. Take it with meals and give it three months before judging whether it suits you. The glucosamine is made from shellfish, so tell our pharmacist about any seafood allergy, and ask us to read you the amounts off the pack before you order.

Description

Jointflex Omega, Four Joint Ingredients in One Formula

Jointflex Omega is taken for everyday joint comfort and easier movement — the knee that complains on stairs, the hands that stiffen after a long day at a keyboard or a counter — and it brings four ingredients to that job rather than the usual two.

Four ingredients rather than two is the whole proposition here, and it is a reasonable one: the research that found a benefit for glucosamine used chondroitin alongside it, MSM has its own small body of trial evidence, and omega-3 brings something different again. Below you will find what each one contributes, what the research honestly shows, how to take it, and the two things to ask us before you order.

What Each Ingredient Contributes

Glucosamine is a building block your body already uses to make the cushioning molecules in cartilage. It is the most studied ingredient in the joint category and the reason most of these formulas exist.

Chondroitin sits in cartilage too, where it helps the tissue hold water, and water is what gives cartilage its spring under load. The trials that found an effect used it together with glucosamine rather than on its own, which is how it is supplied here.

MSM, methylsulfonylmethane, is an organic sulphur compound. Sulphur is part of the connective tissue proteins in cartilage, and MSM is the ingredient here with the most interesting recent research, which is covered below.

Omega-3 fatty acids are the ingredient that makes this formula different from the rest of the shelf. EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart, which is an authorised European claim where the daily amount reaches 250mg, and omega-3 is a part of the diet most people in Kenya get less of than they might.

What the Research Shows

The honest position on these ingredients is mixed, and it is better to hear it here than to be sold something.

The largest glucosamine and chondroitin trial is GAIT, funded by the United States National Institutes of Health and published in the New England Journal of Medicine, following close to sixteen hundred people with knee osteoarthritis over 24 weeks. Across all participants the combination performed about the same as placebo. Among those who began with moderate to severe pain, around a fifth of the group, 79 per cent responded to the combination against 54 per cent on placebo. The researchers called that subgroup result preliminary because the group was small.

MSM has been tested separately. A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in 2011 gave 49 people with knee osteoarthritis just over three grams of MSM daily for twelve weeks. Physical function improved significantly against placebo, and pain improved by 21 per cent, although the pain difference fell just short of statistical significance. The authors were careful to say the improvements were small and that it remains to be seen whether they are clinically meaningful.

Taken together: these ingredients may help, the effects reported are modest, they work slowly, and they are well tolerated. That is a reasonable basis for a three-month trial and a poor basis for a promise, so we are not making one.

Jointflex Omega Composition: What to Ask Us

The composition is the question customers ask most often about this product, so here is a straight answer, including the part only a pharmacist holding the pack can give you.

The four ingredients are glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and omega-3. The amounts of each are printed on the pack, and we have chosen not to publish figures we have not read off the carton ourselves.

The amounts matter more on a four-ingredient formula than on almost anything else we sell, and it is worth understanding why. The glucosamine trials used 1,500mg daily. The MSM trial above used just over three grams. The omega-3 heart claim needs 250mg of EPA and DHA a day. A tablet carrying a fraction of each is a perfectly reasonable product, but it is a different proposition from one carrying the full amounts, and only the panel tells you which you are buying.

So call or message us. Our pharmacist will read the panel off the pack we are holding, give you the figure for each of the four, and tell you plainly how it compares with the single-ingredient products on our shelf. That takes two minutes and it is the most useful thing anybody can do for you on this product.

How to Take It

With meals, and steadily. Taking a joint supplement with food is gentler on the stomach and it makes the habit easier to keep, which matters more than it sounds on something you need to take for months.

The number of tablets a day is on the pack, and our pharmacist will confirm it with you along with the amounts. If you are also taking another glucosamine product, tell us, because the two need adding up rather than stacking.

Give it three months. Every serious trial in this field runs for twelve weeks or more, and the MSM study above ran for exactly that. Some people notice something in four to six weeks; others need the full three months. Take it steadily through that period, then stop and see whether you miss it. That is a far better test than judging day by day.

Pair it with movement. Gentle regular activity is what keeps a joint comfortable, and for knees specifically, strengthening the muscles around the joint has better evidence behind it than any supplement. The two work together rather than competing.

Who Jointflex Omega Suits

Adults with everyday joint stiffness who want a broader formula than glucosamine and chondroitin alone. People in their forties and beyond noticing their knees after stairs or a long day on their feet. Anyone who has already tried a two-ingredient product and wants to add MSM and omega-3 without buying three bottles. Walkers, runners and people whose sport is hard on the joints. And anyone who would value the omega-3 for its own sake alongside the joint ingredients.

Is Jointflex Omega Right for You?

A few things worth settling before you start, and our pharmacist will go through them with you in a couple of minutes.

  • SHELLFISH ALLERGY. Glucosamine is manufactured from the shells of crustaceans. If you have a shellfish allergy, tell us before you order and we will find you something else. This is the most important line on the page.
  • If you take warfarin or another blood thinner, speak to your doctor first. Glucosamine, chondroitin and omega-3 have each been reported to affect how readily blood clots, and this formula contains all three.
  • If you are diabetic, mention it to us. Glucosamine is an amino sugar, and while the evidence suggests little effect on blood glucose, it is sensible to watch your readings when you start.
  • Possible effects to know about. Mild stomach upset, loose stools or a fishy aftertaste from the omega-3 are the commonest comments, and taking the tablets with food usually settles all three. Anything that persists is worth a call to us.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding? Check with your doctor before starting, as there is limited information for these ingredients in either situation.

Storing It

Keep the pack tightly closed in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight, below 25 degrees, and out of reach of children. Omega-3 is sensitive to heat and light, so keep it away from the cooker and the window. Keep the desiccant sachet in the bottle and check the expiry date on the label.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Jointflex Omega composition?

Glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and omega-3 fatty acids. The amounts of each are printed on the pack, and our pharmacist will read them to you before you order rather than us publishing a figure we have not checked.

What is Jointflex Omega used for?

It is a daily supplement for everyday joint support, bringing together the two most-studied joint ingredients with MSM and omega-3 in one formula.

What is the dosage?

The number of tablets a day is on the pack, and we will confirm it along with the amounts when you call. Take them with meals, which is gentler on the stomach and makes the habit easier to keep.

What are the Jointflex Omega side effects?

Mild stomach upset, loose stools and a fishy aftertaste from the omega-3 are the commonest comments, and taking the tablets with food usually settles all three. Call us if anything persists.

How long before it works?

Give it three months. Every serious trial in this field runs twelve weeks or more. Some people notice something in four to six weeks, others need the full period.

Does MSM actually do anything?

A randomised placebo-controlled trial in 2011 gave 49 people with knee osteoarthritis just over three grams a day for twelve weeks and found physical function improved significantly, with pain improving by 21 per cent though falling just short of significance. The authors called the improvements small. It may help, modestly.

I have a shellfish allergy. Can I take it?

No, and please tell us before you order. Glucosamine is manufactured from crustacean shells. We will find you an alternative.

Can I take it with warfarin?

Speak to your doctor first. Glucosamine, chondroitin and omega-3 have each been reported to affect blood clotting, and this formula contains all three, so the conversation matters more here than on a single-ingredient product.

How does it compare with JointFix or the plain glucosamine products?

This one adds MSM and omega-3 to the usual two. Whether that is worth the difference depends on the amounts, which is why we will read you the panel. Our pharmacist will set the options side by side rather than simply selling you the one you are looking at.

Can I take it with another glucosamine product?

Tell us first. Glucosamine from two sources needs adding up rather than stacking, and our pharmacist will work out the total with you.
