Glencee Vitamin C 1000mg Effervescent Tablets, 20s
Glencee vitamin c effervescent tablets supply 1000mg of vitamin C in an orange-flavoured tablet dropped into a glass of water once a day, made by Glenmark and supplied in a damp-proof tube of twenty.
One tablet a day for twenty days, and the amount in it is the thing most worth knowing before you start. A thousand milligrams is a large dose by design, comfortably useful and comfortably short of the daily ceiling, and it behaves differently in the body from the smaller amounts in a multivitamin. There is also one property of the effervescent format itself that decides who should take it every day.
What 1000mg of Vitamin C Actually Does
It is more than ten times the daily requirement and half the adult upper limit of 2000mg a day. One tablet daily is comfortable. Two is not, and there is no reason to take two.
There is one more thing worth knowing about a dose this size: vitamin C absorption is saturable. At this size roughly half of it is taken up and the rest is passed in urine. A larger tablet is therefore not proportionally more useful, and sustained intakes above a gram a day are associated with kidney stones in people already prone to them.
The claim that an effervescent format gives faster absorption is worth separating from that. The tablet certainly dissolves faster than a capsule breaks down, which is a real convenience. It does not change the ceiling on how much vitamin C your gut can take up, and no format does.
What It Is Good For, Accurately
Colds. Taken regularly, vitamin C does not stop most people catching them. It does reliably shorten them, by around a tenth of their length in adults, and reduces how rough they feel. Starting it after symptoms begin has not been shown to help much, so the benefit belongs to people who were already taking it.
Collagen. This one is real biochemistry rather than marketing. Vitamin C is a required cofactor for the enzymes that build collagen, which is why scurvy shows up in the skin, gums and healing of wounds. What that does not mean is that taking more than you need produces visibly better skin. It means a shortfall shows, and correcting a shortfall matters.
Iron. Vitamin C substantially improves absorption of iron from plant foods. If you eat little or no meat, or you are taking iron tablets, taking this with the meal or the tablet is a genuine and underused benefit.
Energy. Not supported. Vitamin C does not act as a stimulant and correcting a deficiency you do not have will not lift you. If tiredness is the reason you are here, the cause needs finding.
Effervescent Tablets Contain Salt
An effervescent tablet fizzes because it contains sodium. Sodium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate reacting with citric acid is what produces the fizz, and they make up a substantial part of the tablet by weight. That is true of every effervescent tablet from every manufacturer.
A study of more than 1.2 million patients found that people taking sodium-containing soluble and effervescent formulations had a higher rate of cardiovascular events, and were substantially more likely to develop high blood pressure, than people taking the same medicines as ordinary tablets. That study covered medicines taken several times a day at far higher sodium loads than one vitamin tablet, so it should not alarm anybody taking one a day.
It is still the right question to ask, because the people who take a daily vitamin C are often the same people who have been told to watch their salt. If you have high blood pressure, heart failure, kidney disease or you are on a salt-restricted diet, speak to our pharmacist before making this a daily habit. A plain vitamin C tablet or capsule contains no sodium and does the same job.
How to Take It
Drop one tablet into a glass of water, about 200ml, wait until the fizzing stops completely, and drink it. Once a day, with or just after food.
Taking it with a meal is worth doing deliberately if you eat little meat or take iron, because that is when the iron absorption benefit happens. A tube of twenty tablets is twenty days at one a day.
Recap the tube tightly straight away. The stopper contains a desiccant and effervescent tablets absorb moisture from the air quickly, which is why they come in a damp-proof tube rather than a bottle.
Before You Start, Check These
Speak to our pharmacist first if any of these apply:
- High blood pressure, heart failure, kidney disease or a low-salt diet — because of the sodium, and this is the one most people have never been told.
- A history of kidney stones — sustained vitamin C above a gram a day is associated with stone formation in people already susceptible.
- Haemochromatosis or any iron-overload condition — vitamin C increases iron absorption, which is the last thing wanted here.
- Another vitamin C product or a multivitamin — the amounts add up, and 1000mg is already half the daily ceiling.
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding — 1000mg daily is above what a prenatal preparation provides. Ask us.
- Children — this is an adult dose. Ask us about a children’s preparation.
Side Effects
Uncommon at one tablet a day. Loose stools, wind or mild stomach discomfort are the usual complaints, and they come from the unabsorbed portion rather than from anything going wrong.
Tell us about swelling, unusual thirst, or a rise in your home blood pressure readings.
What Is in the Tablet
Vitamin C 1000mg per orange-flavoured effervescent tablet, twenty tablets in a damp-proof tube, from Glenmark. The effervescent base is citric acid with sodium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate.
Storing It
Keep the tube closed with its stopper in place, dry, and out of direct sunlight, away from the bathroom and the area beside the cooker. Moisture is what spoils these tablets, not heat alone. Use within the date on the tube and keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much vitamin C is in a Glencee tablet?
1000mg per tablet, orange flavoured, twenty tablets in the tube. That is more than ten times the daily requirement and half the adult upper limit of 2000mg a day.
What is the dosage?
One tablet dissolved in about 200ml of water once a day, with or just after food. Wait until the fizzing stops completely before drinking it. One a day is the dose and there is no reason to take two.
Does vitamin C stop me catching colds?
No. Taken regularly it shortens colds by around a tenth of their length in adults and makes them less unpleasant, but it does not prevent them. Starting it once symptoms have begun has not been shown to help much.
How much sodium is in an effervescent tablet?
Enough to matter if you are watching your salt. Sodium bicarbonate and sodium carbonate are what make it fizz and they are a substantial part of the tablet. If you have high blood pressure, heart failure or kidney disease, ask our pharmacist about a plain tablet or capsule, which contains none.
Is it really better absorbed because it is effervescent?
It dissolves faster, which is convenient. It is not better absorbed in any way that matters, because vitamin C absorption is capped. At 1000mg roughly half is taken up and the rest is passed in urine, whatever the format.
Does it help with energy?
No. Vitamin C is not a stimulant and topping up beyond what you need will not lift you. If tiredness is your reason for taking it, that needs a cause found rather than a supplement added.
Is it good for skin and collagen?
Vitamin C is genuinely required to build collagen, which is why a shortfall shows in skin, gums and wound healing. Correcting a shortfall matters. Taking more than you need does not produce visibly better skin, and anyone promising that is overstating it.
Can I take it with iron tablets?
Yes, and it is one of the better reasons to take it. Vitamin C substantially improves iron absorption, particularly iron from plant foods. Take it with the meal or with the iron tablet.
How long does a tube last?
Twenty days at one tablet a day.
Can I take it in pregnancy?
Ask us first. 1000mg daily is more than a prenatal preparation provides, and the two together may be more than intended.
Are there side effects?
Uncommon at one a day. Loose stools, wind or mild stomach discomfort are the usual ones, and they come from the portion that is not absorbed.
