Astymin Syrup 200ml, Amino Acids and Multivitamins
Astymin syrup is an amino acid and multivitamin tonic, given to help support appetite, recovery, and general nutrition during and after illness.
What Astymin Syrup Is
It is a sweetened liquid containing the ten essential amino acids — arginine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine — together with vitamins A, D3, E, C, folic acid and the B group. It is a nutritional supplement rather than a medicine, sold over the counter, and it is most often given to someone whose appetite has dropped: after a fever, after surgery, during convalescence, or in a child who has been off their food.
Tablets (India) Limited of Chennai make it. The same brand appears as Astymin Forte and in capsule form; this listing is the 200ml syrup.
The Amino Acids, Put Next to an Egg
This is the part of Astymin syrup that nobody prints, and you should have it before you buy.
The published label figures put the amino acids in the tens of milligrams — lysine around 25mg, leucine around 18mg, arginine around 13mg. One boiled egg contains roughly 450mg of lysine and 540mg of leucine. A glass of milk contains more again. So a dose of this syrup supplies a small fraction of what a single egg does, and the phrase “essential amino acids” on the label, while perfectly true, is not doing the work the marketing implies.
That does not make it useless. Where it genuinely helps is the vitamins, and the appetite. A person who is eating almost nothing benefits from a pleasant sweet tonic that carries vitamin C, folic acid and the B group, and that often gets them eating again — and food is where the protein comes from. Buy it as a vitamin tonic and an appetite prompt, which it is. Do not buy it as a protein supplement, which it is not.
Who It Is Reasonably Given To
Someone convalescing after illness, surgery or a long fever. Someone whose appetite has fallen away with stress or overwork. A child who has been ill and is eating poorly, on the advice of whoever is treating them. Older adults eating small meals. In all of those the sensible framing is a short course while things get back to normal, not a permanent daily habit.
Giving Astymin Syrup to Children
We are asked this more than anything else, and the honest answer is that the dose has to come from whoever knows the child. The published adult direction is fifteen millilitres twice a day. There is no general paediatric dose on the pack, and there should not be one on a shop page either, because it depends on age, weight and what else the child is already taking.
The reason we will not simply print a children’s dose is vitamin A and vitamin D. Both are fat-soluble, which means the body stores rather than excretes the surplus, and both are already in most infant drops and most paediatric multivitamins sold in Kenya. A child on two supplements at once can quietly exceed what is sensible, and neither parent nor page would know. For a baby under two, ask a clinician before giving any general multivitamin syrup, including this one. For an older child, tell us or your doctor everything else they take and let somebody do the addition.
How Astymin Syrup Is Taken
Fifteen millilitres, which is one tablespoon, twice a day for an adult, or as directed. Take it after food if it unsettles your stomach. It is sweet, so if you have diabetes, count it, and ask us about the sugar content before you start.
Keep the bottle capped, cool and out of sunlight, and use it within the period stated on the label once opened. Give it a fortnight to a month and judge it on appetite, not on the scales.
When Not to Take It, and What to Check
In pregnancy and breastfeeding, do not start it without asking. Not because it is dangerous, but because pregnancy vitamins already contain vitamin A and folic acid, and vitamin A in particular is one you do not want to stack.
Speak to our pharmacist first if any of these apply:
- Any other multivitamin, or infant drops — the vitamin A and D add up, and that is the whole risk with this product.
- Levodopa for Parkinson’s — the B6 in a multivitamin can work against it.
- Methotrexate or an anti-epileptic — because of the folic acid.
- Kidney disease — an amino acid load is a real consideration here rather than a theoretical one.
- Diabetes — the syrup is sweet, so it counts.
Anyone with a known allergy to any ingredient should read the pack rather than this page.
What It Will Not Do
It will not build muscle — the arithmetic above is why. It will not treat an infection, correct anaemia on its own, or replace a meal. If a child or an adult is losing weight and you do not know why, that needs a doctor and not a tonic, and we would rather say so and lose the sale.

Why Buy Your Astymin Syrup from HealthAlone Kenya?
HealthAlone is a pharmacist-led health ecosystem licensed by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, and our stock is original, sealed and correctly stored. On a product this widely bought, what a pharmacy adds is the arithmetic on this page and somebody to ask about a child’s dose rather than guessing it from a website.
Tell us who it is for and what else they take, at the counter or ahead of your order, and our pharmacist will tell you whether this is the right tonic, whether a plain vitamin C or a proper paediatric multivitamin would serve better, and when the answer is that nothing on the shelf will.
It is one more step in our vision: building Africa’s most trusted health ecosystem, accessible to everyone, everywhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Astymin syrup used for?
It is a nutritional tonic of ten essential amino acids with vitamins A, D3, E, C, folic acid and the B group. It is most often given to someone recovering from illness, surgery or a long fever, to an adult whose appetite has dropped, or to a child eating poorly after being unwell. It is a supplement, not a medicine, and it works by supporting nutrition rather than by treating anything.
How much Astymin syrup should an adult take?
The published direction is fifteen millilitres, one tablespoon, twice a day, or as advised. Take it after food if it unsettles you, and judge it over a fortnight to a month on appetite rather than on weight.
Can I give Astymin syrup to my baby?
Ask a clinician first, and this is not us being cautious for form’s sake. The syrup contains vitamins A and D, both of which the body stores rather than excretes, and both of which are already in most infant drops and paediatric multivitamins. A baby on two products at once can exceed what is sensible without anyone noticing. Tell us or your doctor everything the child already takes and let somebody do the addition.
Is there a children’s dose?
Not one we will print. There is no general paediatric direction on the pack, and the right amount depends on age, weight and what else the child is taking. Bring the child’s details to our pharmacist or ask whoever is treating them.
Does Astymin syrup build muscle?
No, and the numbers are the reason. A dose supplies amino acids in the tens of milligrams; one boiled egg supplies several hundred milligrams of lysine and of leucine. If protein is what you are after, food is both cheaper and far more effective, and we will say so rather than sell you a tonic for it.
Does it increase appetite?
That is the most reasonable thing to expect from it, and it is why it is prescribed as often as it is. A sweet, pleasant tonic carrying B vitamins often gets somebody eating again after illness. The benefit then comes mostly from the food, which is the point.
Can adults take it, or is it only for children?
Adults can take it and the published dose is written for adults. It is bought for children often enough that people assume otherwise, but convalescence, poor appetite and a period of eating badly are the same situation at any age.
Can I take it every day, long term?
It is better used as a short course while appetite recovers than as a permanent habit. The fat-soluble vitamins are the reason: taken indefinitely alongside another multivitamin, they accumulate. If you find you want it every day for months, that is worth a conversation about why.
Is it safe in pregnancy?
Ask before you start. Pregnancy supplements already contain vitamin A and folic acid, and vitamin A is the one you least want to double up on. This is an addition question rather than a danger question, and it takes a pharmacist thirty seconds.
Can I take it with my other medicines?
Usually, but check first if you take levodopa for Parkinson’s, methotrexate, an anti-epileptic, or any other multivitamin, and if you have kidney disease. Bring the list to the counter or send it ahead of your order.
